cool, I get to see opening night

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

So as not to reiterate my embarrassment at going late for MIA: please note that the NYC tickets go on sale TODAY at twelve noon. $23.
I'm calling after I get out of work.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 18 February 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Dude, Cat's Cradle SUCKS, don't go there Dizzee!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 February 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

It's the only way he'll learn, Nick.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 February 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Yay!

Sym Sym (sym), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

The show was absolutely ridiculously amazing last night.

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 3 April 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Urp, I forgot!
Gotta go get it!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 3 April 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I'll be in Hotlanta.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 4 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Tonight tonight tonight!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I concur with Debonair, that show was hotter than the sun.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

DJ Wonder was great! "Oi" to "Give U More" with both versions of "Hype! Hype!", "Forward" and "Forward 2", the Gype riddim, "What Have U Done Lately" and more in between and then capping it off with some sweet sweet junglizm: "Incredible", "Lighter" and "Original Nuttah". Dizzee was good too. He's clearly figured out the stage thing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like Wonder's SF set was just about the same one he played in Vancouver -- no Gype here, though. But otherwise the same, right down to the drum 'n' bass tracks. But yeah, Dizzee: the boy breathes straight fire!

Martin Turenne, Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

carrboro, nc? is that Chapel Hill? we saw a poster for dizzee when we were in chapel hill last week. we wondered who the audience would be

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Lots and lots of college kids.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

haha, good point. tarheel fever! we saw an m.i.a record too. its weird, its sort of difficult to tell how popular certain british things are in america. and, because of the specific interests and distortions of ilm (like any board), its sometimes difficult to tell how popular things are...anywhere!

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

so he's that amazing live? i was contemplating the Chicago date, but am still as yet undecided...

janni (janni), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

He's good and with a good crowd he's definitely fun. Amazing is stretching it for me. I would say that hearing the stuff DJ Wonder spins on a good soundsystem though is revelatory and for that alone I would recommend going.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I cannot believe he's coming to New Orleans either. No one comes here.

p.j. (Henry), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the Dj Wonder set was kind of underwhelming, only because in between the loooong wait between him and Dizzee, we were treated to a grime/crunk mix that was actually better than DJ Wonder's set (IMHO)... maybe they were still figuring out sound issues then, or something.

Either way, things went ablaze all over the venue when Dizzee and crew took the stage.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah they were playing the Semtex mix in SF too. It sounded good. I hope a nice version leaks online eventually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've been looking desperately for that Semtex mix since last weekend. It was hot. But I also loved the DJ Wonder set, I didn't feel like the Semtex mix greatly over-shadowed it (though I did like it better).

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

sadly, i might be missing dizzee's new orleans show. though, on the good side, it will be to see olivia tremor control live.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Get them on the same bill!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

(that said, I've seen OTC live several times, and I've seen Dizzee live once.. and I'd personally take the Dizzee show over even the best OTC show I saw, which was at Terrastock II in 1998)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

sadly, i might be missing dizzee's new orleans show. though, on the good side, it will be to see olivia tremor control live.

The very idea of passing up the Dizzee show for OTC is just melting my brain. Come on, we can take brutal advantage of the Parish's cheap High Life deal and terrorize the city in our grime-amped drunken insanity.

I cannot believe he's coming to New Orleans either. No one comes here.

New Orleans ILxors reveal yourselves! Representation must occur!

adam (adam), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

SF show was great! Crowd was feeling it, high energy, Dizzee's enthusiasm & hunger were evident. Wonder's chronological grime set was good (can't speak to how chronological but I'm sure it were) & he dropped some old drum n bass tunes as well, including "original nuttah" which I hadn't heard in forever. IndependentSF is much better now that they got rid of the bar in the middle of the venue. I liked the Dizzee song "jezebel" (hadn't heard that one) and there was a nice moment when DJ threw on "(It's Bigger Than) Hip-Hop". From Dead Prez to MIA to Dizzee, round it goes.

arrrrp (mutabaruka), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

"The very idea of passing up the Dizzee show for OTC is just melting my brain."
i am a corny psych indie fuxxor, what can i say? my otc plans aren't yet definite. i'm depending on my friend's gf's brother for the tix hookup.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

one problem I've had with a lot of hip hop shows I've been to is the sound mix... bass is too high / distorts and I can't make out what the MCs are saying. I don't know if it's because Dizzee is hyperarticulate or his pitch is higher or what, but at the SF show last night I thought the sound was really good. I think it might have been the sound because Wonder's set was also really crisp. The murky basslines came through but didn't overwhelm the other sounds.

i figured there were other ilm people there but wasn't sure who. indistinguishable from other hipsters? there should be a special hat or something.

mutabaruka (mutabaruka), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I took off my special hat. The Independent is HOT HOT HOT (and always has been even back in the Kennel Club days.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I'll wear a special hat! It will be black and have a fairly menacing baseball-bat-wielding Baltimore Oriole on it. Also I will be staggeringly drunk as a bar down the street from the venue also offers $1.50 High Life.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

New Orleans is a weird venue town. A lot of dead crowds. I actually saw OTC here several years back and the sound board was screwy or something and only super-indie-kid was dancing to it. (and only from the neck up) It sooked.

I had a kid a few years ago so don't get out much these days. Maybe the crowds've changed. I'ma wear my fake gold teef f'this one.

p.j. (Henry), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I think the NO indie kid nonchalance is a reaction to the party town reputation--like, out on the street the tourists are going nuts and having a good time so in here in our white-belt enclave we will solemnly stare at band X.

So no, the crowds haven't changed.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, to p.j. and any other secret NOLA ILx-types:

Felonious Drunk and I will be at the Chart Room at Chartres and Bienville at 9 and probably at the venue around 10. I'm 6'4", wearing a blue t-shirt and a Baltimore Orioles cap.

adam (adam), Friday, 15 April 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

i totally forgot that i'm going to see him next week. huh.

joseph (joseph), Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

stupid passover.

in other news, hi joe!

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Agh, Atlanta show was great! DJ Wonder spun a set he dubbed "a history of grime" -- pretty good. Then he addressed the crowd thusly "That was grime. Before grime, there was another genre that was very influential on grime. Can anyone guess it." Nearly every dork in the crowd starts screaming "GARAGE" (in some retarded mockney accent - and I don't mean just pronouncing it "garridge", it was one step off from being "COR BLIMEY, IT'S GARAGE, MATE!!") DJ Wonder silently performs the greatest and most subtle eye-roll in the history of the universe and spins a wicked ass jungle mini-set.

Then Dizzee came out and simply killed. Relentless. I can't believe how good this guy is live -- just mind-boggling flow and energy. A guy had a seizure on top of me while an old man smoked pot out of a pipe directly in front of me (and facing me). It was a memorable night.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

i'm really excited to see this in philly - i haven't been to the troc in ages, and dizzee didn't get the warmest reception last time he played here.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

There was a really interesting combination of genre-types making up the crowd.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

NOLA show was excellent. Met PJ, who lurks and should post more. DJ Wonder's set was fantastic--he did the jungle thing.

adam (adam), Monday, 18 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else catch the NYC show? It was awesome. DJ Wonder also a dropped jungle bit in his DJ set.

Dizzee had the crowd crazy hyped and there was the funny phenomenon of every white girl in the front being totally in love with the hype man. He was alright but they were practically in a clothes throwing frenzy over the dude.

Candicissima (candicissima), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

It's the English rock star in America thing. Transmogrified a bit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

It's the "being a hot guy" thing, more like.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

(I KNOW that, you crazy person. ;-) )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

the nyc show was GREAT. kids going crazy for "forward riddim" in wonder's set + the bonkers "fix up look sharp/stand up tall" encore = hotness

interesting (though incredibly frustrating at times) crowd, too

joseph (joseph), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

one of the fratboys standing behind me during wonder's set:

"dude, this is like the fucking revival of drum and bass!"

joseph (joseph), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Bloody hell, I tried to remind myself on this very thread TWICE and STILL missed it...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 April 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

whoops, i forgot about this too

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

DC tonight, at the 930 Club.

steve-k, Monday, 25 April 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

doors open @ 7:30, Wonder @ 8:45

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Hey Brian, maybe I'll see you there. I'll be one of the slightly balding white guys with glasses there(w/ gf who is a blonde)!

steve-k, Monday, 25 April 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I went to the Miami show last Tuesday. It was great: a real diverse setlist, with "Boy in Da Corner" getting as much play as "Showtime"

What sucked was the crowd: 25 people, in a space that fits about 200. It was one of the more dispiriting concert experiences in recent memory.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

25 people? That's nuts. The place was packed to the gills in NYC Saturday.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Steve, you're more than welcome to give me a call to meet up before or at the show. I think I'm grabbing some ethiopian beforehand.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

"25 people? That's nuts. The place was packed to the gills in NYC Saturday."

With two exceptions (both with me on Tue night), none of my friends loves Dizzee, but then again, they don't like much hip-hop or grime either either, and certainly not enough to admre him even as an "exotic import." It's pretty representative of how the "alternative" crowd regards Dizzee: he NEVER gets played at their clubs.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

oh man, i'd like to go, but i think i'll be recording late that night.

jc

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

what the hell, i have turned into msp.

jc

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm especially surprised about the Miami show because when I went down that way for WMC, I found out that there was a solid UK population in the MIA/FLL area. Though, I know from my own friends that not all Brits like grime.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

The place seemed pretty packed in Atlanta.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Nice-sized but not huge crowd in DC last night. Some of DJ Wonder's opening set had an almost industrial funk like feel to it(DJ Brian Miller says that he can mix that type of grime with Cabaret Voltaire and make it work). Dizzee was real energetic and the beats were booming out of the 930 soundsystem.

steve-k, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Only 5 dates left on the tour.

steve-k, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So, the DJ Semtex Crunk and Grime mix that was playing at these shows looks like it's now generally available in the UK:

https://secure.globalgold.co.uk/clubsidewinder/cswacatalog/BOX_FRESH_GARAGE_PACKS.html

Does anybody have this? Or know when it's coming out in the US?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Friday, 27 May 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Chances are it will never be released in the US, as is true of 98% of independently-released grime packs/mixtapes. Time to crack open your piggy bank!
