Aaliyah looks likely to score the UK number one this week, with her posthumous single 'More Than A Woman'. - from Playlouder.com

Good news or just a sad example of nothing sells better than death?

Robin, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, and what do people think of the song in general?

Robin, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is a sad example of how nothing sells better than death. But having said that, the song is actually pretty good I think. It sounds original at least. In fact I hadn't head any Aaliyah and obviously when she died there was all this saturation praise of her, but I still thought it was probably bullshit and she probably was nothing special. However theres something about the way the chorus kicks in kind of sharply fades off again that I quite like. er....thats my less than expert analysis.

she was good and this would have been her year

i bought her CD a week after she died

mark s, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I find it weird the way you wouldn't be able to tell from the poster campaign that she had died. It's got like a big glammy photo of her in a low cut top and just says 'hey, here's the new single, available on her album on Arista' or whatever.

N., Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It would probably be offensive to release a ballad as the final single, so in a way I'm glad they're going with the peppy "More Than A Woman", but I reckon something like the heart-stoppingly beautiful "I Care 4 U" would be a more fitting farewell.

Tim, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

presumably n they could not work out a way to shoot a new promo pic

poss the "farewell" is still in the pipeline?

mark s, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As far as I can gather, there's another single due, 'Rock the Boat', which is kind of a ballad. It contains the line, 'Change positions, change positions' which possibly deserves a place in the pop prudery thread of a few weeks back.

Peter Miller, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't 'Rock the Boat' the one she was actually shooting the video for when she died? And record companies can always put together videos - the magic of performance footage, behind the scenes type-stuff and just plain old stills stuck together for four minutes always seems to do the job.
On a somewhat related note, is there still a re-release of 'My Sweet Lord' planned - another example of artists selling after death.

Bill, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

b-but the chiffons are still alive!?!

mark s, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The vid for the Aaliyah single does end w/ a little RIP message.

That video is complete, the plane crashed on the way back and all -- "Rock the Boat" was the second single released in the U.S., and a slinky little number it is, too.

scott p., Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No whats really ironic is this:
She starred in a movie before she died. Queen of the Damned. She plays the part of an Undead Goddess.

Lord Custos, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AKA the worst movie ever, have you seen the preview? What the hell.

Ally, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That video is complete, the plane crashed on the way back and all

Isn't this a similar situation to The Shamen's LoveSexIntelligence? Shot the video, member of the band drowned in the sea while still on location, eventual video = as it would've been anyway.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WRT 'My Sweet Lord' - didn't Georgie end up buying the rights to 'He's So Fine'?

I hope he payed himself every time he performed it.

Bill E, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>> and what do people think of the song in general?

Appalling. (Never heard it.)

the pinefox, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someday, in the ultimate irony, the most perfect song the pinefox will ever hear will go to #1, and he won't know because he will hate it without hearing it.

i hadn't heard "More Than A Woman" on the radio really heavily until just today, and it's been stuck in my head like fuck. still, i probably won't buy the album, just because Timbaland only did like what, 3 tracks, and 2 of them have been singles. Anyone know offhand how much Timmy did on the One In A Million album? was listening to Supa Dupa Fly the other night and reminiscing about how much his sound knocked me out back in 96/97...

also, heard a lot of the Tweet single "Oops (Oh My)" today, is pretty good, too. nice minimalist Timbo.

al, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'One in a Million' contains seven Timbaland produced tracks. They're not particularly mindblowing. I bought it in the HMV sale for the price of a large sliced loaf. I also bought Timbaland and Magoo's 'Indecent Proposal'. I only noticed the title when I was in the check-out queue and thought, 'that doesn't bode well' and I was right. Perhaps they will both grow on me, but right now they're filed under 'disappointing albums of 2002'.

Peter Miller, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah One In A Million is patchy: "Hot Like Fire" and "If Your Girl Only Knew" are great and the title track is amazing, but otherwise... The Timbo tracks tend to be nice but at that stage too cautious, and the other tracks are often dire. Al, you should ignore the low Timbo ratio on her recent album, the other producers are more than fine enough to take on the burden (the Key Beats crew if anything disappointed me slightly - just slightly - after the all-round brilliance of Destiny's Child's "Perfect Man" and "Independent Women Part II". I was expecting paradigm-busting stuff, and instead it's merely very very good). Plus, a lot of my favourite tracks on the album, like "Never No More", "I Care 4 U" and "It's Whatever", just work so brilliantly as songs that I think even Rodney Jerkins would not have been able to stuff them up.

Tim, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I second what Tim just said. If you like anything by her, most likely "Aaliyah" is your proper fix. Key Beats are great... but MORE paradigm- busting please, indeed. Who are they producing now?

As for 'More than a Woman', I'd have preferred 'It's Whatever' to have been the single. They'd play it at high school dances and everybody would have to improvise. It's also a very lovely track, as song or as production.

Honda, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I don't hear it, then how will it be the most perfect song I'll ever hear?

(Jeez - and I thought you were meant to be a *Philosopher*...)

the pinefox, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someday, in the ultimate irony, the most perfect song the pinefox will ever hear will go to #1, and he won't know because he will hate it without hearing it.

maybe the most perfect songs are those we never get to hear, after all, it is then unsullied by our own personal experience?

everything doesn't have to be empirical ya know. maybe the pinefox's method is superior?

gareth, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart Norfolkwindmills.

Yes, but it was "Move Any Mountain".

Nik, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well she is number one, in the annual loads-of-new-entries-and-long- running-hits-finally-falling-out just-after-New-Year chart.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess I'm glad, if only for sentimental reasons, but Puretone's "Totally Addicted to Bass" is actually a better record...

mark s, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
Aaliyah may not've been the best singer or the best actress in the world but if youve been watching the news lately youd know that everyone who she has had an impact on that impact was tremendous here it is march and people still talk about how they cant believe that she died! I think Aaliyah was ready to die because she said she had alreasy acclomplished all her dreams, and if she can accept it people should let her rest in peace!

FINAL NOTE:in arabic the name "AALIYAH" means, the highest most exalted one and thats what she IS and always will be to those whoes lives shes touched.and whenever you say the name or even type you are givin the girl who died in that plane crash the title that she truly deserves!!!

Jeff W, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

g, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
