Derek Bailey/Evan Parker throw-down

Evan P be a sad muthafucka. Hold the fucking front page he's started his own record label be shit like all the other ones he's started apart from Incus which was Derek's baby all along and he was only along for the ride. Putting out 273rd album of fuckin nonstop seagull noises I mean like Vic Reeves said he's just BORING been peddling the same act for 35 years. Evan Parker is the Norman Collier of improv. I went to this improv all-dayer at the Donmar Warehouse way back in '89/90 and there was a discussion panel thing in the afternoon and all Parker did was diss John Lydon he couldn't even tell the difference between Sex Pistols and PiL and said that Melody Maker should have ignored them altogether and just covered proper new music, i.e. him, with nude centrefold pullouts of Han Bennink no doubt. And then 12 years later he has the fucking AUDACITY to make a record with Jah Wobble because you know why? He's seen the kids buying Bailey d&b and with the Ruins etc. and he wants in on it didn't give a shit for Thurston Moore before but all of a sudden here he goes chasing the ambulance but his music is spurious shit only ever worked in the Brotherhood of Breath and maybe Kenny Wheeler's big band (the decent '70s line-up, not the crappy ECM here's a song for all working mothers line-up) and with Scott Walker. Anyway wasn't even best tenor/soprano player in Brotherhood Lol Coxhill pisses all over him.

Derek B RULES for he is COOL without trying to be and his philosophy is cool and his it's-so-anti-now-by-the-way-can-you-fix-my-fridge outlook on life is FANTASTIC and he is KING and Evan you sad fucka looking for old glory days but you overrated mallard impersonator and that's the end of it.

I talked to someone abt Parker the other day and we were wondering whether he is actually improvising or mostly repeating the 'circular breathing' licks nowdays rather than reacting to what he hears. But he complements Brotzmann brilliantly on Nipples and he does a fine job on Four compositions for sextet.

But saxophone solos is brilliant. There aren't many who invent their own, highly personal take, on an instrument as he did. And I admire him for it. And that gives him licence to say what he likes, too.

I think Lol is a brilliant improvisor and innovator on his own right (as Digswell duets proves) but Parker is good too.

two years pass...
What you dudes doin' wasting time dissing rare an' beautiful spirits like Evan and Derek for? Now that Anthony Braxton, he really is a no-playing, talentless, over-rated, pseudo-intellectual, unutterably tedious, weedy alto squeaking motherfucker. Same goes for that really old guy,Ornette Coalman- the inventor of [ho ho ho] harmalodics. In other words everyone plays at the same time, jus' runnin' up and down those old scales time after time to no apparent purpose. If everyone really told the TRUTH [and I mean that in an absolute, intrinsic sense my brothas, as opposed to a relativistic sense] they is always GLAD when Ornette has finished- they applauds with motherfucking RELIEF!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently they hate each other's guts these days - which must make it tough to avoid one another when they're both slogging round the same improv circuit

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems that the brickbats being flung at EP here are similar to those flung by myself at DB. I think they're both cool tho, really.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio my man, sure I've heard the records. What you think I is man, a RETARD! What Derek and Evan do is somethin' else. Regarding Evan, ain't nobody made the sax sound like he did with Paul Lytton on Collective Calls [Urban], and he was in fine form recently with Lytton and Von Slipthemone as a trio [that's when three play together, Julio my man]. As for Braxton and Coalman, we has a native expression in Yorkshire which goes, "Fuck them with a Ragman's Trumpet". Kenny G anyone?

Tim Owen (Tim Owen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)
