Post-makeover, she looked like an anorexic drag queen.

i used to have the paperback photobook of Grease when I was a kid. It made me feel all funny down there. seeing that sandra dee rip thread reminds me that me and my sister used to sing "won't go to bed till i'm legally dead!" we thought that was so funny. i used to think olivia was really hot in the "physical" video. maybe not as hot as linda ronstadt on roller skates, but hot.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

My instinct's telling me pre, based on an episode of the Goodies I watched the other evening, but pics plz!

Patrick Allan (adr), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

thus far my instincts of ilm as fanboys of pre seems to have credence

secondhandnews, Monday, 21 February 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

does this have anything to do with the song "look at me, i'm sandra dee"?

I used to think she was better post-makeover. Back when I thought spandex was pretty. Now that I'm older, I'm thinking pre-makeover. I still thought Rizzo beat everyone hands down, makeovers be damned, but maybe that was just my inner dyke talking.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

i still say she looks better post-makeover. the "girl next door" look is so played out, you corny indie fuxors. ;-)

christo and jeanne-claude (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

It's kind of funny when you think about it. Moral: It really isn't better to be yourself. You'll get laid being someone else.

Never really occurred to me until just now. hehehehe. I like it!!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

This is an interesting topic. It seems to me more people would have said she was hotter post-makeover at the time the movie was actually released. Thinking about it now, though, it's abundantly clear she was hotter pre-makeover.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Actually, she's really not my type anymore, although I have noticed that I'm becoming more attracted to blondes again, which is a little disorienting. (It may be an aging thing of not lowering expectations but broadening preferences.)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 21 February 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

When I saw the movie as a kid, I remember thinking: Why did they have to dress her all up like that? But I was a wholesome Methodist Youth Fellowship regular. I guess I still mostly go for wholesome now. (Or "wholesome" if you prefer.)

But the real lesson was that it IS better to be yourself, because at the end, it turns out that travolta and o n-j tried to be more like each other, but truly loved each other for who they were.

several x-posts

I was disappointed this wasn't a poll when I opened the thread.

I was searching for a quadrophenia vs. grease poll, I'm sure I remember reading this on ilx but I can't seem to find it, maybe it was somewhere else.

pre over post, but grease is really all about Rizzo to me anyway, Sandy cannot compete in any iteration.

I first encountered grease in the form of videos shown on vh1 and Pop Up videos, and the thing that always stuck in my mind about the 'You're the One That I Want' sequence was this pop up explaining how the trousers Olivia Newton John was wearing were so tight she had to be sewed into them, this always seemed off-putting to me.

The Breakfast Club has the same unfortunate moral, at least in regards to the Ally Sheedy character

Also, Rizzo in the blonde wig during the Sandra Dee song >>>>> the rest

but pre I guess. Post, she look a little like Greedo from Star Wars

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Sunday, 25 August 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

she looked weirdly old post-makeover imo. i could never work that out.

piscesx, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

too much makeup and backcombed hair makes ppl look older

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Sunday, 25 August 2013 18:21 (twelve years ago)

Ally Sheedy looked awesome pre-makeover.

I'd probably veer to the leather rockabilly look more than the preppy wholesome look, but in the film she does look much better before.
