Best 90's car racing song?

YAH! vs. GO! Trumpet solo vs. bass freakout! Flat, shouted vocals vs. near-unintelligible mumbling! Fight!

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 21 February 2005 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Primus easy.

Aaron A., Monday, 21 February 2005 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, these are two unpleasant songs.

I'd have to say Cake, but if I was born a couple years earlier it'd be Primus easy.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd take a loaded gun, a bullet, and the easy way out.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 21 February 2005 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Jesus Built My Hotrod" pwns them both.

latebloomer: HE WHOM DUELS THE DRAFGON IN ENDLESS DANCE (latebloomer), Monday, 21 February 2005 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ratebroomer OTM, but the Primus song wins here for me. The only Cake song I ever liked was "Rock N Roll Lifestyle".

Un investigador del siglo XXI (AaronHz), Monday, 21 February 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd always assumed the Cake tune was a metaphor, whereas the Primus tune was strictly straight-forward narrative.

Either way, they're both kinda meh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Primus if only for the intro...

Otherwise, that naughty Speed Racer mix!

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ironically, neither of these songs make me want to drive fast.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Cake, mostly because of a MIDI file of the song I downloaded years ago that gave me the giggles.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Cake also had the better video.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like about a half-dozen, maybe as many as ten, Cake songs, and "The Distance" is definitely one of 'em. On the other hand, I have vaguely positive memories of two or three Primus songs, but wouldn't actually go back and listen to their albums on a dare.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" a fair amount.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad was strangely fond of "Short Skirt, Long Jacket."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

it's hard not to be.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Cake's clip-art album covers are a million times better than Primus's shitty claymation album covers.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

on the album -- cake wins, hands down. It's hard to fuck with that uber-slick production.

live: primus is better. They always put on a great show.

robot mark (robot mark), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that the one Primus album I would defend to my dying breath is the exact same album of there's that DOESN'T have that shitty claymation cover (it is called The Brown Album). Not to mention the one least produced, just songs slapped down onto tape in Cla(what was at the time brand spanking new)

My dad's favorite Cake song is 'Race Car YaYas' cuz of the line about fuzzy dice dangling like testicles from rearview mirrors.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Claypool's Rancho Relaxo basement studio

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it rockist to begrudge these bands their unrelentingly self-conscious, hamfisted irony?

Aaron A., Monday, 21 February 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Short Skirt/Long Jacket" has the greatest video ever.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 21 February 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

cake as a whole is disastrously underrated. those first four
albums (the new one kinda sucks, except of course for the bread cover) are ridiculously consistant. really clever and precise.
if you're terminally allergic to smarm and deadpan vocals and trumpet solos, i guess that's understandable, but generally speaking, in 20 years this band will have as much hipster cache as can.

i will happily provide a mixtape setlist should anyone desire converting.

r. harvilla (cobra commander), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, you're probably right.

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Anything Kyuss wrote is a better racing song.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

wait - is he saying in twenty years can won't have any hipster cache?

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Shh, you're giving it away!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer settled this by the fourth post! OTM.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I CAN'T DRIVE 55!!

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

twenty years pass...

ILX 20 years ago was insane

Neanderthal, Thursday, 8 May 2025 13:46 (ten months ago)

Cake were decent but this song has a shitty riff in the chorus. I'm not the biggest Primus fan even though I like them but Jerry slaps

Neanderthal, Thursday, 8 May 2025 13:47 (ten months ago)

cake as a whole is disastrously underrated. . . . in 20 years this band will have as much hipster cache as can.

― r. harvilla (cobra commander), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

So what’s the verdict?

early rejecter, Thursday, 8 May 2025 13:57 (ten months ago)

they went the distance i guess

Neanderthal, Thursday, 8 May 2025 14:13 (ten months ago)

Hipster cache has evaporated after 20 years. Also, no one has compared cake to can since Monday, 21 February 2005 22:10.

BrianB, Thursday, 8 May 2025 14:17 (ten months ago)

one thing I can't get over when listening to Fashion Nugget now is how much vibraslap there is in it, despite listening to this CD a ton in middle school I never noticed it's all over nearly every track. often off-time and sometimes you can hear the guy's hand (or something else?) hitting it after it's struck. its actually very distracting like one of those squeaky bass pedal things, once you notice it you can't not hear it
