Casablanca: CDR80

First off, this isn't about the record label.

Anyhow, Casablanca is my favorite movie. I like to nurture the delusion that I am a character in Casablanca -- it's a wonderful way to trick onesself into feeling mysterious and attractive.

I want to create a mix CD that captures the feeling of the movie in music form. Sure, I could just listen to the soundtrack or songs from that era. However, I'm wondering how many good songs exist that are specifically about Casablanca (2HB) or that have lyrics dealing with that special troika of a- underground wartime partisan activity b- doomed romance in the sentimental vein c- corny and borderline racist exoticism. The only contender that department (that I know of) is "Cafe Hong Kong" by Future Bible Heroes.

Ideas, anyone?

Actually, I'm glad this thread isn't what I first thought. I was trying to figure out how "Rock and Roll All Nite" would sound after 75 minutes of disco.

Check out the Casablanca compilation on Elefant records (Spain). An eclectic (well, sort of) mix of soft indie-pop that is supposed to evoke the kind of romantic exoticism of the movie. I quite like it (most of it, anyway).

I'm sure these ideas would fall apart upon actual examination of the lyrics, but the first three songs that popped into my head are:

Steely Dan - Haitian Divorce
Bob Dylan - Black Diamond Bay
Johnny Hodges - Day Dream (well this one just sounds good).

Bryan Ferry - "These Foolish Things" and/or "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
