less celebrated post-punk-funk face off! GO!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hungry, So Hungry", if only because, for the longest time, I thought they were singing "We're so punk! We're so gay! We're so punk! We're so gay!"

Did you used to listen to WNYU when you were a teen, Alex? Both these songs really remind me of their early Eighties playlists.

Rainy Day Guitarthur (Arthur), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"We're So PunK! We're So Gay!..."

Bahahahahahaahahahahaha I'll never be able to listen to this song the same way again.

Nah, I think I heard both via WLIR (later re-born as WDRE). I had a hard time getting WNYU on my receiver from uptown, alas.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I forgot about their weird reception. I don't think I could get it once I moved out of my dorm to the East Village.

Rainy Day Guitarthur (Arthur), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

All these fuckin' hepcats here on ILM and only Rainy Day Guitarthur has weighed in???

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I could never stand that Medium Medium song. One tally for APB!

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Could someone please YSI me that APB song?

I downloaded it a while ago but it got wiped out. Great song.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that Medium Medium song wasn't what I was thinking of...but my tally for APB stands.

I'm having trouble finding that song, too, Bill...it's stuck in my head with great constancy, which makes not finding it even more unnerving. I don't feel like buying the whole bloody disc, either.

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

APB, I've only heard it a few times yet the little breakdown is still stuck in my head.

monia.l (monia.l), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my goodness, you may have solved one of my life's mysteries.
APB- is that the song w/ the chorus that goes
"I would like to shoot you down
I would like to shoot you down...."
and then something like
"punk, get ready to go, punk get ready to go"??
If so, I've been searching for that songs for ages- I'm also an early 80s LIR listener, but no one I know has been able to ID that song-
Wow.

mclaugh (mclaugh), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that's the one, only he's not saying "punk, get ready to go...", it's "FUNK, get ready to go...".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, I can't find the lyrics anywhere, so I'm not going to embarrass myself further by telling you what else my 7 year old mind thought the lyrics were....
But, where would I find this now? Do you have it on a compilation or something? slsk?

mclaugh (mclaugh), Monday, 21 February 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shoot You Down" = WAY WAY WAY BETTER. It's even almost sort of funky.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have it on the compilation pictured at the top of this thread which I bought in, like, `89. I'm guessing it's well out of print (and I think it was when I bought it), but ya might look on eBay.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Here it is on vinyl.....

I never could understand all the fuss about Medium Medium. I've tried them several times and they always go in one ear and out the other. I don't think I've ever heard of this APB and that terrifies me, especially when I read the review that the pic came from. Were they really from Scotland too? And I've never heard of them before? Excuse me, I'm going to go stick my head in the oven, now.

Christ I hope they're on slsk.

Honestly I do not think even the college radio station I DJ'd at had it. And I would know because I went through every single one of their 'A' records in order to organize them.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Gemm has it, too. But surely it's on slsk?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sticking up for Scottish funk APB stylee

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

APB, incidentally, were WAY funkier than the Rapture will ever manage to be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

and yet still not funky! white people!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

HOJL >>>>>> Any song released between the years 1978 and 1982

besides "Temptation," anyway.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

you're insane.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Osborne led the group through further hits like the 1977 No. 1 R&B and Top 5 pop smash "Back In Love Again" and "Holding On (When Love Is Gone)," one platinum and two gold albums, before stepping out on his own in 1980. With the release of his first self-titled solo LP in 1982, "Jeffrey Osborne," he found himself chart-bound via hits like "On The Wings Of Love" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HOJL by like A BILLION TRILLIION.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I never could stand the Rapture.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean i think teh rapture is okay, but better than anything between 78-82? that's pure mentalism.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I would pick On The Wings Of Love over them, too.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean i think teh rapture is okay, but better than anything between 78-82? that's pure mentalism.

I'd say that it's natural that it wasn't until way later that what was started in '79-'82 was truly perfected.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

wrong.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Wash your mouth, Bill!

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've decided that the Rapture suck. There, I said it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Gemm has it, too. But surely it's on slsk?

I've never seen it on Soulseek (and I've been searching for weeks), but it's apparently still in print and I can order it from Borders or Barnes and Noble (and almost did).
