Was just listening to Soul Junk's 1953 album from '96. Marveling at how '90s rock it sounds, but what excellent songwriting!

Soul Junk's good fun! I never owned any albums but always liked what I heard, Glenn's a fine feller. Donut Debonair will say more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Soul Junk is a good name for a band.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 21 February 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this album might be their furthest development of their rock music. I like the hip hop stuff that followed as well.

I love 1956 (rap stuff) and 1951 (Truman's Water + Christ) the best...

Is there supposed to be a trail in relation to Nirvana, or does >>>>> mean something else?

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It means that Tim is on crack, but we love him anyway.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

They're "greater than" symbols.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, sorry for the ignorance. 4x as great, no less?

I definately would rather listen to Soul Junk these days than Nirvana, but it would be hard compare Soul Junk to memories of seeing Bleach-era Nirvana at the Vogue and CoCa a long time ago...

So I'll bow out, but 1956 rulz.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't know about everyone else, but I don't use multiple greater than symbols to mean twice, three times, four times as good, etc., but rather to distance the one artist from the other to the extent that it seems visually appropriate.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 21 February 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just kidding - I'm nobody anyway, so don't worry about it. And I think I'm killing your thread.

Back to Soul Junk - do they tour anymore? Their website is kind of unreadable/cryptic and I'm not sure what is going on...

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 21 February 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, but I live in San Diego (where they're from, obviously) and I haven't seen a listing for them playing in a long time. I do know that Glen is a jingle writer/producer and his company/studio does lots of commercials. Once, I saw a jewelry or perfume commercial or something that had this version of the Troggs' "A Girl Like You" on it and I recognized Glen singing.

That's great. I'd seen a review of a live show they did with other Christian acts, but there was no date. I got the feeling that it was late '90's, maybe even fairly recent. The review was a Christian related site, so it was all positive, but it was kind of funny. Something along the lines of "not your usual Christian-alternative act" - the other acts listed sounded like a Good Charlotte type thing, it would have been fun to see them in that setting.

my favorite of the hip hop stuff is 1957. noisy, fucked up assault, drinking music, helps parties start in with the falling-down dancing

i saw him about 3 years ago at a church in Berkeley with a few other Xian bands: Danielson Familie, Deerhoof, and Half-Handed Cloud... none of those sound like Good Charlotte at all.

soul junk has a new album out. SOUL JUNK REMIXED 1937.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Wobbly does one of the remixes, also.

five years pass...

long been curious about soul junk and picked up a cheap LP copy of their/his 1st album (1950) the other day. comes in the sleeve of an old dutch hc comp* that's been wrapped in "soul junk" screened tinfoil. it's intriguing, but very homemade, primitive & lo-fi. somewhere between the freed weed and sebadoh III, soundwise. danielson family are obvious fellow travelers. dig it a lot. i might not ordinarily be able to hang with the emo xtian zeal, but the fucked up sonics are a good foil, scans more as vaguely scary outsider art than evangelical indie rock.

recommendations for other soul junks?

* emma compilation 1986. looks pretty cool, really, wouldn't mind hearing it. gots sonic youth, negazione, and a bunch of unpronounceable euro HC.
