...the Jim Carroll song. I love it. "I miss 'em--they died" Not much more to say, really. What's your take?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Enh.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

After posting this I realize a lot of people probably lump "People Who Died" with "It's The End of the World as We Know It" or "We Didn't Start the Fire".

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

i lump "people who died" in with "detachable penis."

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

In retrospect it's like bad Richard Hell, but I don't hate it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

John Cale's version is good and it has Sterling Morrison on it - a real live "Person Who Died"

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I like it, but it's a tad too long.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

"Deaths" by the Country Teasers is better

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Too long is OTM -- should have clipped one verse.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

The Drive-By Truckers cover this all the time, and do a great job with it. Heck of a set closer.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

a near-great punk rock novelty number but too long and the band is lame in a not-good way. but i loved it when i first heard it so maybe i'm just old & snotty now.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

anyone know how this ended up in "e.t."?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

ET? Like, Entertainment Tonight? Woah.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Or ET the Spielberg flick?

As long as I only hear this song about once every other year, I really enjoy it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I still like to say, "By the very same BIKErs"

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine in high school and I used to say, "Tony, can you fly?" to each other sometimes.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

'e.t.' the spielberg flick!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

ABSOLUTE CLASSIC

I played this song religiously when I was a college radio dj back in the mid 80's and could never quite get my head around who it always seemed to strenuously offend someone (resulting in lots of tearful calls on the request line). Some people!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

how, not who

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

WOW

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Fuck y'all haterz this song is good....punk novelty tune, fun...what's not to like?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

After posting this I realize a lot of people probably lump "People Who Died" with "It's The End of the World as We Know It" or "We Didn't Start the Fire".

I'd sooner lump it with "88 Lines about 44 Women" by the Nails or "All of This and Nothing" by the Psychedelic Furs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Jim with Patti....who, to my knowledge, has yet to die.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

... or "Done Too Soon" by Neil Diamond... no, hold on, it's not that good

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I like that song quite a little bit. It's obviously sort of a novelty song -- I always associate it with "88 Lines About 44 Women" -- but it's interesting that it seems to correspond to his life, at least as it was described in "Basketball Diaries."

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

And what about you, Jim Carroll?
All your friends have.
What are you waiting for?
Do it!!!

"Dead Rock n' Rollers" - Detention

dlp9001, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I'd sooner lump it with "88 Lines about 44 Women" by the Nails

I was just gonna say that! I think because they both got played a lot on college radio in the early '80s, they were both lists, and they both talked about sex and drugs in ways that excited my 14-year-old brain.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

YES! "88 Lines About 44 Women" - I can't believe I'm not the only one to lump those two songs together, like, inextricably. "Three Sisters" and the William S. Burroughs one are the only other Carroll tunes that I find at all memorable.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

As a Truckers fan, I think their *recorded* live version (might be better some nights), on Alabama Ass-Whuppin', is a tad overdone, especially toward the end (mebbe that one-verse-too-many in the original, mentioned above, drives 'em over the edge? Nah, it's their fault): "They, Daahhed, they Daaaahhhhhed, THEY FUUGGIN DAAAAAAAHHHHHED"--makes even me think,"Yes, but not soon enuff."

don, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

"88 Lines about 44 Women" by the Nails is one gnarly dogfuck of a song. In other words I don't like it.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

ONE OF THE WORST SONGS EVAH

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

(NAILS SONG, THAT IS)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

This song is pure pain to my ears.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

lovebug wit' da Alex imo!

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

yes that was my little tribute to the great man. ":)"

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE THIS SONG

i always walk by the best of the Jim Carroll Band at work, but i dont buy it because i figure somehow it might suck. does it?

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

It pretty much does suck, yeah. Couple OK songs. "People Who Died" is a good argument for buying singles @ iTunes.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Wah? I loved that record. Not that I remember one song aside from the "People Who Died".

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Skip that and go with Catholic Boy (which includes "People Who Died", "Three Sisters", "Catholic Boy", "It's Too Late" and "Wicked Gravity"....NONE of which sucks).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, go with that album (Somebody should cover some of those songs too, or have they?)

don, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

i love Catholic Boy

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Another vote for 'Catholic Boy' . . .

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I meant the whole album. I'll take "People Who Died" over "Love Comes in Spurts" any day, anyway.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

There I must respectfully differ. Jim Carroll lacked a Bob Quine.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I meant the world album, Roger. But there's plenty of room for Hell in my life, too.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

CLASSICKE

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I like this song just fine. Never heard the album, though I probably will at some point.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Completely classic and a rather cool way to wrap up the Dawn Of The Dead remake.

Catholic Boy is worth seeking out.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Skip that and go with Catholic Boy (which includes "People Who Died", "Three Sisters", "Catholic Boy", "It's Too Late" and "Wicked Gravity"....NONE of which sucks).
Or just rent "Tuff Turf" which has Jim and the gang doing two of those songs, if memory serves.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Have no qualms with this song. Haven't heard it since I was about eight but I'd probably still enjoy it.

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Anybody read The Basketball Diaries? I took the title literally and thought it was pretty amazing: "hey the guy wrote this while he was a teenager AND addicted to dope!" Very disappointing to learn he wrote it years after the fact.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

isn't that kind of a rockist approach to book-writin'?

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

oh for christ's sake...HAHAHA
