I imagine most of the participants would either end up in casualty or in police custody, but it would be a fuckin' great night out.

"no women, huh? guess they're too busy cooking and serving."

Certainly not – everyone knows the best chefs and maîtres d’ are men!

No, it would be a boys night out with absolutely no women involved - well, not apart from the lap-dancers anyway.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I would just like to remind everyone that dinner party != night out

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

John and Don are already booked for mine. They were quite keen to met Monica.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"I would just like to remind everyone that dinner party != night out"

Oh I've tried explaining this to my friends before - but every time we try to get together for a "dinner party" it ends up bearing all the hallmarks of a night out; except without the actual "going out" bit and with me having to do all the clearing up the next day.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Peepee, thats come combo. I'm guessing Julian Cope would sit opposite Syd and mimic his every move. I'd love to see Brian Eno meet Raymond Scott.

Theres is a meal involved. It is scampi, chips and peas. Classy.

dmun, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to avoid bringing in asshole frontmen. I'm trying to avoid ego clashes. J Spaceman probably won't get along with anybody here, but he rules so I had to invite him. Same goes for Polly Harvey. Simon seems to be a genuinely nice person and can dish the Britpop dirt. The minimalists won't say much during dinner but they'll come into their own when we're smoking Snoop's weed and relaxing in the lounge with our after-dinner drinks.

Should be a fun night.

Me
Simon Gilbert
PJ Harvey
Steve Reich
John Cale

OMG, we made it this far without anyone claiming to invite G.G. Allin or Chuck Manson!

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

These aren't necessarily the people I want to meet most, but I have to think about the social dynamics, you know? I'd want to share a meal one-on-one with Ian Curtis, Richard Hell, David Byrne, Lou Reed, Miles Davis, and David Bowie (even though the last three would be pricks), so a fun evening would have to be:

1. Devendra Banhart
2. Joanna Newsom
3. Stephen Malkmus
4. Jeff Tweedy
5. Win Butler
6. Bjork
7. Mike Skinner
8. Mathangi Arulpragasam (M.I.A.)
9. Dizzee Rascal
10. Wayne Coyne
11. Jeff Mangum
12. Me.

Now, doesn't that seem like we'd all get along?

And we'd be eating Conor Oberst.

My gut reaction was DON'T MAKE ME TALK TO THE MUSICIANS, but then I got envious of your guests after all. As it is I'll be serving drinks.

Did anyone else choose any guests such that you don't have any idea whether they might be genuinely interesting, but would be curious simply to hear them speak?

I have no idea whether Jonsy from Sigur Ros can speak English, let alone whether he'd be interesting. I'd just invite him to see how tall he is.

"Did anyone else choose any guests such that you don't have any idea whether they might be genuinely interesting, but would be curious simply to hear them speak?"

I've no idea about Bo Diddley, Leadbelly, and just a smidgen about Syd Barrett, but I figure that the most of my guests are music fans and lovers as much or more than performers.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

can I just pick dead people from the last year or so? Great.

1) Rodney Dangerfield
2) Ol Dirty Bastard
3) John Peel
4) Hunter S. Thompson
5) Gene Scott
6) Sandra Dee
7) Spalding Grey
8) Ray Charles
9) Joe Strummer
10) Johnny Ramone
11) Jimmy Smith

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Some truly interesting choices above, but as far as some of them goes, I wouldn't wanna hang out with them any more than any assholes that I know already.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I just figure they'd all mix well - Gene Scott and Johnny could gang up on Spalding. Peelie would stand back and interject the odd pithy witticism. Rodney and ODB and Hunter would sneak off to get high. good times.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"can I just pick dead people from the last year or so?"

Sure, as long as you're prepared to do what's necessary to take your own place at the table....
