And I don't mean "Every Grain of Sand."

I'll say "Tight Connection To My Heart"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

"brownsville girl"

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

"Blind Willie McTell"

What's wrong with "Every Grain of Sand"?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Nothing whatsoever. I'm tired of hearing about how great it is.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

And yet you started this thread. Thrillseeker!

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Brownsville Girl, by, like, a hundred million miles.

Though all the other ones mentioned so far are great, incuding Eveery Grain of Sand (the bootleg series version especially). There's a ton of great 80s Dylan stuff.

80s Dylan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 90s Dylan

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I also love, love, love "Jokerman" and "Maybe Someday."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

"Series of Dreams" ...'twas rcorded in them 80s, wasnnit?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

awww yeah you guys are picking great songs

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

"Jokerman". I liked some of the songs from Empire Burlesque, especially "Clean Cut Kid" and "When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky", but remember disliking the production, compared to the '60s stuff which I was just then digging up (& digging.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

"series of dreams" was recorded in '89.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah - i recall he mentions, in "chronicles", recording it with lanois.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

"the groom's still waiting at the altar" is 80s right?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Foot Of Pride is another good one

Rick Kronberg (TCBeing), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, these are all freaking great. The version of "When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky" on the bootleg series is especially electrifying. Another track that would probably make it near the top for me is Carribean Wind.

Groom's Still Waiting At the Altar is def. 80s (Shot of Love)

The third disc of the Bootleg Series is really just a gold mine (I think it has 4 or 5 of the songs listed so far).

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Empire Burlesque has always been a favorite, especially for the lustful "Something Is Burning Baby" and "Clean Cut Kid."

Have you guys heard Lou Reed's version of "Foot of Pride"? He really tears a new one.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

"Angelina" from the bootleg series is amaaaaazing.

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Sweetheart Like You off of Infidels.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Re "Sweetheart Like You" the "a woman like you belongs at home" line always struck me as mean, in a way that Neil Young's "A Man Needs A Maid" never did.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

the man in the long black coat

schmoo mcshmoo, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

**The third disc of the Bootleg Series is really just a gold mine**
OTM! "Nobody throws a ball like Catfish can." Guess that was 70s.

POO = "Silvio" I don't know why, but I just luv it.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

haha "Silvio" -- the first time I ever saw Dylan it was on the Down in the Groove tour. He basically did "Silvio" and then that was it for the 80s! Everything else was from the 60s and 70s.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Robert Hunter write the lyrics for Silvio?

Not saying it doesn't count, I just think it's worth noting that Bob didn't write the lyrics (or did he co-write it, maybe?). Great song, for sure.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

and didn't Sam Shepard co-write "Brownsville Girl"??

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

"Death Is Not the End"

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Strangely most of 80's Dylan was just that... poo

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

I can't listen to "Brownsville Girl" without giggling -- so bombastic, that refrain. I'll pick "Jokerman" for its memorability even though I have no idea where he was going with the Sodom & Gomorrah reference.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

"and didn't Sam Shepard co-write "Brownsville Girl"??"

Well, whatday know! He did!

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Anyone who still doubts Dylan's phrasing doesn't rival Sinatra, Crosby, or Ella's should listen to what he does with "Jokerman."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

easiest POO ever - "blind willie mctell," one of his 10 greatest songs (and performances).

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

This thread made me haul out Infidels today... Jokerman is as good as I remember it .. Union Sundown is worse, although I still don't mind it ..

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

i always loved the song "shot of love" though it's been so long since i've heard it i have no idea if it still holds up or not. i just remember it rocking quite convincingly.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

For a long time "Shot of Love" was Dylan's favorite song (and Bono's!). He's always had mad love for that album.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Union Sundown will induce a series of uncontrollable cringes, no doubt. My favorite song on that album is actually "I and I."

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I just heard I and I and it brought back memories, although they're more Mark Knopfler memories than anything ... But it almost makes me want to dig out Dire Straits records, which I don't think I want to do.

Sweetheart Like You - I had forgotten the line "Steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they make you a king" .. That was quoted a lot in the 80's...

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Either "Sweetheart Like You" or "Jokerman". Or maybe "License to Kill"

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Mad love for "Infidels" and its outtakes, but none for "Empire Burlesque"?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

The version of "Born In Time" recorded during the Oh Mercy sessions is amazing. About a million times better than the Under The Red Sky version.

Officer Pupp, Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

empire burlesque doesn't have a whole lot going for it, but it does have "dark eyes" right? that's a keeper. dylan and patti smith performed a few duets of it back in the nineties (right when patti was coming out of retirement). they're pretty ragged, harmony-wise, but it's something to hear for sure.

tylerw, Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

and officer pupp is otm regarding the oh mercy version of born in time. it's amazing. the sound quality on the bootlegs that have it could be better. dylan needs another 3 disc bootleg series thing! seriously.

tylerw, Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

ILM forgot about Dignity

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Thursday, 27 April 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Blind Willie McTell" seconded but most songs listed are pretty great too, esp. Angelina.

Maybe more interesting is POO Dylan's '80s album. I'd say Shot of Love is a pretty cool album.

Brownsville Girl

"even the swap meets around here are getting corrupt"

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

i think tonight i'm gonna have to listen to lots and lots of dylan.

flea market economy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think I have to go with Blind Willie McTell as well, though Foot of Pride does kick tremendous amounts of ass, and I should give Infidels another listen sometime.

On the other hand, my pick for worst Dylan track of the '80s is They Killed Him, from Knocked Out Loaded. I mean, a children's choir singing about Gandhi and King and Jesus, with the refrain of "MY GOD THEY KILLED HIM!" At least he didn't write it. "Need A Woman" is pretty awful as well, but its stupidity is easier to take.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Thursday, 27 April 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

But that sounds brilliant!
Also, "Most of the Time."

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 27 April 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

anyone have an mp3 of "ain't gonna go to hell for anybody"?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 27 April 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Wow, I had never heard this song (or heard of it)… it is quite a recording:
