i think so. it pretty much sums up what kraftwerk were all about, and if someone doesn't like "showroom dummies" then they probably won't like ANY kraftwerk song.

I reckon it'd have to be The Model ...THE quintessential Kraftwerk song needs that element of great pop melody. Autobahn and Computer Love also have it, as does Neon Lights (see previous thread), but the Model's ubiquity makes it fit the bill. All great stuff though...

Oops, I think I've made my feelings on "The Model" clear on other threads!

"autobahn" is not the definitive KW song. its boring and pedestrian (ha!) when compared with "TEE", "the model", or ANYTHING from Computer World.

Ooh ... fight, fight... Okay, it predates the 100% electronic stuff, but still has the great melodic hooks. I saw them do TEE live - amazing ... esp. the black & white cine footage of buffers colliding.

its weird - autobahn just feels like such an awkward transition album to me. the first three are really awesome, but definitely not "classic kraftwerk" by any reasonable definition. and from radioactivity forward, they really come into their own as this futuristic, laser-pop phenomenon. autobahn feels like a novelty. it just feels a little dopey, like the first step backward that the group took. i dont know - maybe i owe it another listen with recent ears, but itll never touch "ruckzuck" or "TEE" or "the model" or "numbers/computer world2" or even "boing boom tschak" for me.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I'd sooner say "The Robots", but y'know.....same schtick.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

i certainly prefer The Robots to Showroom Dummies; it's that much slicker and lithe...

boing boom tschack surely has a case for being *the* Kraftwerk song it's about nothing but itself/Kraftwerk/electro pop... the 'werk project would seem a totally love or hate - binary!! - proposition surely?

james porter (james porter), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

The Robots. Or Spacelab.

But especially the Senor Coconut version of the Robots.

what about 'Man Machine' as the quintessential Kraftwerk song? The lyrics are something of a manifesto for them, and the version with which they opened their shows last year was stunning!

I clicked on this topic with the intention of making this exact response.
