Brandy - "What About Us?"

Just heard it on the radio driving back w/ my lunch (ran for the border yet again, ole). Sounds like Li'l Kim's "How Many Licks" (those agressive spikes of synthesizer noise between verses), except those spikes ARE the song, and Brandy's been eated up by the technology, banging out the words boom boom boom, getting distorted and shocked.

It sounds DAMN good.

I can't decide whether it's awesome or not. Brandy does have a bit of a limp lifeless voice which does my head in, like she can't quite be arsed to get really angry and Destinys-like. But defo catchy fun tune/beats.

came on in the car the other day and just about knocked me out. then again, i'm a sucker for anything that fucked up-sounding showing up on r&b radio. time will tell if it's really any good.

i looked it up and apparently Rodney Jerkins produced it, but it sounds like the male voice in the background is saying "Pete Rock" and as unlikely as that is, I'd guess that PR was behind that beat sooner than Jerkins. is it a remix?

I heard it on the TV and wasn't that impressed. Harshness is a great flavouring for R&B but if it takes over the recipe completely the result falls into the "interesting" more than the "good" camp. The beat reminded me of a Company Flow track incidentally.

But then Emma heard it again in the gym and said it sounded OK so we theorised that maybe we'd been put off by the dreadful sci-fi video.

So far, I'm not all that excited about it... it's a bit tuneless isn't it? The production is interesting and electroshocking and whatnot but Brandy really takes it nowhere. The end is the best part where everything starts to deteriorate like Squarepusher stuck his head into the mix.

It's Jerkins. I like it but it's not as good as his work for Mya's "That's Why I Wanna Fight" which, you know, had a TOON. And a pretty interesting narrative too. Plus Mya = infintely better than Brandy in potential personality stakes.

Yes, love it. Always.

still feel embarrassed about thinking the song might've been produced by Pete Rock because of the "B-Rock" ad libs upthread
