...plus i'm a little bit sick and i have a test tomorrow.

...do i go?

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 24 February 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

nb also: i've not seen him DJ before.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 24 February 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

go.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

yes, go. whiskey drinks are good for a cold so i've heard...

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

nb also also: i'm not even 21 so the alcohol isn't a draw either.

i probably shouldn't go. oh, but i should. bah.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

tricky, you goin' tomorrow?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah!!

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm having the same prob deciding whether to go on mon. in columbus.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm psyched he's coming to Boston finally so I don't have to make my obligatory trip to NYC again.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

cool, trickster, I might see you. Still not sure. I hate being out so late on a schoolnight, grrr..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

i think i'll go. for a bit. until like 12:30 or 1 at the latest.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

He's coming to San Francisco in a few weeks. THEN he's really going to start pulling out all the stops.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

aight, stormy, it's invasion of the germans this weekend so if you can't make it tomorrow there's always friday (dj hell) or sunday (triple r). the endless grey is making me stir crazy so i need to go out.

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Jeff-PTTL and I will also be at SmartBar tomorrow!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 February 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

just got home from this. mayer was really good, and jake fairley was sounding great ... and i'm sure mayer would have been even better when he came back on. but why do these parties always have to happen on a weekday?!

rm265, Thursday, 24 February 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

oh does anyone happen to know what that "lovefood" remix was that mayer dropped? i hadn't heard that before.

rm265, Thursday, 24 February 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

so its worth going? Damn.
I'm imagining columbus having exactly 5 M Mayer fans, but maybe i'm just an elite chicagoist.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 24 February 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

i think so. mayer's visits here are rare enough that i always make the sacrifice. i just hate having to leave just when it's picking up ... same thing happened with his last visit.

(the last visit was all kompakt all night, so him and reinhard did keep it interesting right from the first beat on....)

rm265, Thursday, 24 February 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

I believe the Lovefood remixes 12" is scheduled to be Kompakt POP 06!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Going alone shouldn't be a problem. I did this tons of times when I was single. Nothing wrong with it. Yes, it's a bit awkward when it's a gig and you're standing there alone, but what the hell, better than sitting at home. So if I were you I'd go and make me jealous. ;-)

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

But Kompakt is a family affair! ;)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

i went, and it was great (except for the 40-year-old guy who was awkwardly hitting on me)! stayed until 1, left after he dropped the superpitcher mix of "the difference it makes" which was BANGIN' (and also the only song i recognized from the whole set, aside from what sounded like a guy covering kylie's "slow" (track ID?)).

and if any other ILXors were there, i was the guy wearing a light blue sweatshirt and a knit cap, holding a can of red bull in my hand for most of the night.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 24 February 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

>>aside from what sounded like a guy covering kylie's "slow" (track ID?))

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

isn't that one of the new dirk wellen trax?

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

ok maybe it's the other guy from closer musik then?

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Gah, I meant to post up there that the Slow cover might have been the Junior Boys.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

do go and dance the night away on my behalf...when i went to see him in chicago in oct 04, i had spent the whole day walking around and was really too exhausted to go on the whole night! shame! my poor ex-bf, he probably started hating me that very night.

ai lien (kold_krush), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

it was lovely! good crowd, very into it. i stayed til the bitter end. highlights (for me): people going "huh? how do i dance to this? oh wait, this is great!" to dj koze's 'late check out,' the almost religious experience of 'brutalga square', plus some other harder speicher type tracks, the freiland/meloboy hot love, some weird remix of '123 no gravity'...the last hour, though, after everyone i knew had left---from 3 am to 4 am--was flat-out spectacular. at the very end when there was no one left except me and like 25 kids i didn't know, he played justus kohncke's 'elan' (which i like way, way more now that i've heard it on a big system...it's much more anthemic than i initially realized) and then mixed it into...justus kohncke's awesome remix of 'so weit wie noch nie'. everyone was grinning at each other and it felt like millions of flowers had just fallen from the ceiling

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

wow, that sounds amazing. especially the justus kohncke double shot. if i only didn't have work today, i could've stayed past 1:30... sigh.

i hadn't been to the canal room before (except when it was still shine) ... it's a great space though. excellent sound too. i associate with it bottle service and velvet ropes, but hopefully they'll do more nights like this one....

rm265, Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Please let this show be good.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

GAH!!! Hot Love, Brutalga Square, and So Weit Wie Noch Nie. Why did I miss this?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, last night was fantastic. When is Mayer scheduled to play in Boston?

James Jung, Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Tuesday

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah phil, where were you? i was looking for you...i figured you'd be there!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

haha also: i asked michael mayer who rex the dog was and he said "not telling!"

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm still recovering from friday. and saturday. and sunday. oh and monday and tuesday too. i tried to go out - but my body told me "no". went to this 8bit nintendo video art thing at the deitch projects in the early evening, had a beer there, felt woozy, and went home. sucks. friday is sammy dee and plexus though - i probably go to that.

someone told me that he's a 19-year old kid in london!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, hopefully i'll see you at the smartbar tonight (but i'm not sure what you look like, so prolly not)...

deyoung, Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Um, OK! I have a beard and shaggy hair!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

I'll be standing next to the guy that looks like this:

http://photos1.flickr.com/2324926_2c0a5fdc8b_m.jpg

and the short gay mexican, assuming he doesn't get kicked out.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Haha! Which may be likely!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

damn, i couldn't convince anyone to join me so i didn't make it tonight (after mayer's "TECHNO" set a couple months ago @ smartbar, all my friends are weary and shit), but hopefully the traum showcase will be where i will meet a guy with a beard and shaggy hair (which means looking at myself in the mirror, practically) and a short gay mexican, but i can't count on these things nowadays...too much going on.

but both y'all, you gotta come - they'll spin some my best friend records and it'll all be down.

deyoung, Friday, 25 February 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Hi Nate. What's the Traum showcase?

My ears are ringing.

Stormy, I think I saw you. Sorry I didn't say hi. (You might've preferred it that way, anyway.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed the show. I was way tired though, and not drunk enough to dance, so I left just before 2.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I left maybe a half hour after you, Jeff. You just missed "Hot Love," though!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

haha geeta the weird guy who was hanging around me all evening pointed you out to me, i think ("she's a writer for the village voice!")

xpost I MISSED HOT LOVE TOO! :(

joseph (joseph), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

to whomever is willing to go out again this weekend...

http://chi.flavorpill.net/current.jsp#traum

deyoung, Friday, 25 February 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

That looks cool ... and Sub-T is a nice space ... but THE OSCARS, DUDE!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

ha that's funny, joseph--who was it? another choice moment: when mayer played the mfa - the difference it makes (superpitcher remix) -- bubbly tranced-out rainbow marshmallow fluff!! (i luv marshmallow fluff)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to the Keith Fullerton Whitman show on Saturday. I don't even know who is headlining though.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i just got elan, i think kohnckes instrumental stuff is really good, i might get his album. i want to hear that on a big syustem too.

as for "brutalga square" and reliousity, that tune is so amazing, surely it would convert anyone to kompakt.....

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

geeta - his name was petty. he gave me a can of red bull...from his pocket.

i like "the difference it makes" that much more now through its being associated with a room full of people going CRAZY for it - it sounded even HUGER on crazybig speakers, like i was being enveloped by this awesome glacier of sound.

btw, when DOES kohncke's new album drop (stateside)? or has it already and i'm just behind the times? "elan" alone's got me excited for it!

joseph (joseph), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

It is a good album.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about officially dropping but it's been on slsk for a while now. I would love to dance to "Schwabylon" in a club sometime

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

It was out in late January in Germany and now availabe in the US via Forced Exposure.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

wait - geeta's in chicago? damn, another lost meeting. the berlin pics have been great, though, and should continue to maintain my nostalgia...

deyoung, Saturday, 26 February 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Naw, Geeta's in NYC.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 26 February 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

As of Friday, Kim's Music had a few copies of Kohncke's new album.

James Jung, Monday, 28 February 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

"the difference it makes" is just unreal!! Its throatiness and warmth and reminds me of Red 2, also the way its vamp kind of "raises up" at the end of the loop// But the way it achieves it peaks is different, instead of surprising you with aggression it surprises you with how perfectly creamy it all suddenly is, how this possibly menacing sound is giving way to something just gorgeously nice.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

mayer in toronto was just okay. i wanted more kompakt classics! plus the mixing was shockingly a little dodgy -- it cut out a few times completely -- but i'm willing to put that down to a bad soundsystem. crowd was a little on the light (and lame) side but maybe that was oscar's fault? overall i was satisfied but not bowled over.

also, did i see barry bruner dancing his ass off near the front? maybe, maybe not.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

ps "prototype" owned.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

You probably did see me (although I spent a lot more time near the back than the front). I'm usually easy to spot in a crowd.

I've got a lot on my mind regarding this show, mostly about how badly that crowd SUCKED MAJOR ASS. I will spare ILM and expel that venom in a blog post.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Jake Fairley was fucking great.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

i didn't see him. did he go on after michael? what time was mayer over?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

(a story. i leave the venue around 1:45, while mayer's just wrapping up his set. i'm the only one in the lobby, getting my coat out of the coat check, when suddenly michael himself wanders in, so i see fit to quasi-drunkenly accost him re: the true identity of rex the dog. his response: "mark, not only will i not tell you that, but i am still playing and i must go now.")

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

(It was probably more like 12:45, since Fairley wrapped up around 2 AM).

Mayer left the stage for a while near the end of his set, so I'm assuming that was the time you spoke to him out in the hall! He continued for about ten more minutes after returning.

Fairley came on immediately afterward and played for 45-60 minutes.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

sorry yeah, 12:45. like i said, quasi-drunk.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Too bad you missed Fairley. Did you get there in time to see Repair?

Last night, Fairley > Repair > Mayer. Maybe that's not a fair comparison since the first two played live while Mayer played records, but still, the home team fared well last night.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

it would be awesome to find out that rex the dog is ricky gervais.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

i only saw mayer.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Ricky Gervais....doing a techno remix of Hot Love Highway.

james jung, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

um, it's "Freelove Freeway"

;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

um, it's "Freelove Freeway" ;)

but he did mention that he was gonna "drop some drum 'n' bass shit on it"

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I just won tix to the LA show on Thurs!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

how?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

"okay caller. this is for two tickets to thursday's show. WHAT... is the true identity of ... REX THE DOG?"

spencer: "it's ..."

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

haha, flavorpill.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

You know you're been online too long when...you misread "Michael Mayer" as "John Mayer."

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Hurry up Mayer.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Who is going to the show in LA tomorrow besides Spencer?

hector (hector), Thursday, 3 March 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Mohammed Butt (max), Thursday, 25 September 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
