I heard this track because it's become a really common quote to drop in the brass band scene and I wanted to track it down. What's up with Bobby Caldwell though? According to AMG he reps as a smooth-jazzer?

Turns out the man himself beat me to the punch! and this thread is from a week ago WTF? I guess I never knew the name of this song, but I've heard it a zillion times. Anyway, I just heard it on the smooth jazz station at the barbers while I was getting my hair did, and googled the lyrics. Top tune.

i wasnt quite sold on ware str8 from the g8 - maybe felt a little too record industry to capture the true desired lisa stansfield realness - but my interest's piquing a little now definitely. love that cover anyway

So, heard this for the first time a few weeks ago, decided to look into his first two records, and uh...this dude has some pretty serious deep cuts everybody.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CmLdhcUtKMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6-eYpP1Xiohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v2oZo0cKLY

One of the best songs recorded.
He had loads of cuts in his early run of albums.

^ That's an incredible three minutes right there, first time I heard the middle 8 in that one I just about shat myself. It's a shame I can't find any live material from his early period, wonder if he was strictly studio for awhile or what. Apparently he's pretty big in Japan.

You Belong to Me has just the right amount of funk. Probably a good comparison for the new Daft Punk sound as well.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-QWe674v2Q

All his vocal cadence and melody work on You Promised Me is on another level. Floating seamlessly between a falsetto and a growl and touching everything off with the perfect amount of vibrato, goddam. Love when everything kicks in about a minute in with all those instruments dropping in and out of the mix. All the little drum fills too.

I think I'm talking myself into putting Cat In The Hat on my personal classic albums list.

when Jessie Ware did that cover i was excessively worried that all the kids would assume that she wrote it.

this song has had a bit of a renaissance in the last few years, started hearing it more often in dj mixes about 3 or 4 years ago, and there's been a few cover versions itt (that admittedly i didn't know about until now).
the bobby caldwell version is one of my favourite songs. my wife hates it tho ;_;

Didn't see this version posted yet in this thread, unless it was one of the videos removed for copyright infringement. This has always been one of my favorite renditions.

great song, although that snare reverb in the B section is so unnecessary and distracting.

old Bobby Caldwell sounds awesome
― The Reverend, Thursday, 15 October 2015 03:02 (ten years ago)
I'm pretty sure there's just a little bit of autotune on his voice and it sounds weird me.

― sheesh, Friday, 16 October 2015 08:11 (ten years ago)
I'm already getting a Random Access Memories feeling from this -- neat juxtaposition of an older artist I like with nu-sounds, but ultimately falling a little short.

Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been "FLOXED," it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell— Bobby Caldwell (@bobbycaldwell) March 15, 2023

Strangely I always thought the sample Common used on "The Light" was a Stevie Wonder song. Now I see it's Bobby Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes." This song is pretty much perfect.
