Hurrah: The tracks where he doesn't handle the vocal duties are 'Very' good.
Boo: He handles vocal duties on all but two tracks.

d'oh

Anyone Who Can Pick Up A Frying Pan Pwns Death (AaronHz), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I likes it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Is it better than that last one? I cringed when he blamed internet file sharing for poor sales of '18' even though the album just wasn't that great. But he was cool with it, you know.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

god the single is shit

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

He's largely managed to avoid the Play/18 formula, though some of the piano trills are very familiar. The cover, or reinterpretation, of New Order's Temptation is utterly lovely. My favourite track is an electro-disco song called "Very".

davidsim (davidsim), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

"Very" is great. The only track I really don't like is the New Order cover.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

moby does "temptation"?! jeez, i wish i hadn't heard that...

rm265, Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

nothing stated here changes my opinion that he should be stomped by Obie.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

how do you feel about them little Limp Bizkit bastards?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Moby needs to just get it over with and release an entire album of Joy Division and New Order covers.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Obviously he wants to.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

The single is snoozesome.

I've always liked his voice, but I recognize that he needs to use it VERY SPARINGLY for it to work. After this one, I'm like "make one house track and shut the F up."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Poor Moby. Now I feel bad!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I don't! Keep mocking!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I liked his cover of "New Dawn Fades!"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Q: how is the "ambient" disc?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Nobody listens to techno. Except for like 20 million people.

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

how do you feel about them little Limp Bizkit bastards?

they're an issue, but I think Chris Fitzpatrick is a greater trouble for our nation.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

curious about that New Order cover.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

it's godawful

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

The girl he has singing for him on the new LP reminds me a lot of Olivia Newton John. In fact, I had to look it up to make certain it wasn't her.

Turns out it's some chick he's friends with through MoveOn.org.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Chris Kirkpatrick is on the right team, though

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

It's shit.
'18' was a clone of the calmest moments of 'Play'.
'Hotel' is a cheap rip of '18' with some vocals and guitars.
He's not the same 1994 Moby. That's probably a good thing.
But this is nowhere near the quality of 'Play'.
He'll blame file-sharing on this one too, because the sales will be fuck all.

Hi there, I'm a performer who has to vampirize the past to have any continued relevance. Thank you for your continued patronage.

ffirehorse, Friday, 25 February 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Wow, some of you guys act like he fucked your mothers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Anybody remember the NYT piece about him from a few years back? The reporter goes to his loft, and then describes the revolutionary way in which Moby uses so-called "samples" to create pieces of total crap/music. Moby records a new song in like 10 minutes by playing an arpeggio on the piano over the sample, and the reporter's butt explodes. The revolution has begun, and its name is Moby!!!!

mrjosh (mrjosh), Friday, 25 February 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Yep. That article was nauseating.

Ah, well, the other side of the coin (so to speak) is that Moby is laughing all the way to the bank, so fuck me.

ffirehorse, Friday, 25 February 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

Play was pretty good, it was in-between his ravetastic Christian asshole phase and his celebrity vegan food weblog asshole phase. I think the turning point was the Gwen Stefani version of 'Southside.'

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 25 February 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

I want so badly to love and approve of every little thing Moby does, but he makes it so tough sometimes...

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 25 February 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

I like nothing save parts of 18, but I generally defend him.

For some reason.

I mainly come to his defense on issues relating to "but a monkey could make that track!" So? A monkey can also swing around on trees, throw feces at children and eat nanners all day and people are like "aw, cutest!" Monkeys are awesome!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

moby obv thinks so too!

Haahhhhaaaaahhaa! But isn't this par for the course for most NY TIMES reporters?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

uh, no it isn't.

I am a huge fan of his '90s stuff--I like pretty much everything (some of Animal Rights aside) through Play, and despite disliking most of 18 it still had some moments. this one has a two-minute overture I enjoy, and that's that.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Hi there, I'm a performer who has to vampirize the past to have any continued relevance.

please name some performers that don't do this.

i used to be a big fan, but his music just gets less and less interesting to me as time goes on. "play" was the last thing that had good tracks aside from the singles. that voodoo child album was dire.

basquiat (disco stu), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

(xx post ) My bad. Stupid generalization.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
so so terrible

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I have nothing to add, it just needed to be reiterated.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

(Matos OTM about the overture being by far the best part -- it's not even two minutes, though, it's like 48 seconds.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

the single is bad in a way i haven't experienced in some while.

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

rubbish that should be fed to rats, is what this album is.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Mylo, Abe Duque, and Superdiscount to the rescue, doing some great remixes of "Lift Me Up..."

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Ah good god I just heard a preview clip of the Temptation cover. WTF is he thinking? This is awful! I'd rather hear a Nouvelle Vague-type version, at least there's a recognizable intent there!

I'm going to pretty much agree with Matos on Moby's career trajectory. I think he hit a plateau on his social commentary / musical quality scale sometime around 'Play' and it's been downhill ever since.
