Boring Tech Q. 2005

- I have a Roland TR 505 drum machine. The samples are all digital and not that interesting, plus there's no effects to make them sound weird. It's got this weird 24-pin (i think) port on the side, which i understand allows you to somehow put effects on each individual sample. I have lot's of effects boxes, does anyone know how i can link it to them? What kind of lead do i need?

- I want to buy a sampler that i can use live, Disco Inferno-stylee. I've been looking at the Akai S950 rack samplers cos they seem to go pretty cheap on Ebay. Will I be able to do good stuff with it? I don't really want to use it for drums that much, more for weird noises, but I'm guessing most people use it just for percussion? The other one i keep seeing for cheap is the S90, it's like a little box with pads on it. Is it good? Will i be able to control it with a guitar or some kind of midi controller? What about the Korg Electribe sampler? Any better suggestions?

Do you have a laptop? The easiest/cheapest thing to do samplewise at this point is to just control a soft sampler with an Oxygen8 or something like that. You can also do a lot live with Fruityloops, surprisingly.

I knew someone was gonna say use a computer. I already use Reason and Fruityloops to make beats, i don't have a laptop though. I want some hardware for performances. There's loads of S1000 & S20 samplers on ebay everyday for no more than £50 mostly, what should i get???

Basically, what i'm asking is; rack mounted vs. handheld re: live performance, what can i do with the Akai samplers, are there any better ones i should watch out for, oh yeah, help me with my drum machine!!! (Other people ask questions too!)

akai rack mounts are great, solid, easy to use. can't go wrong for what they are. i've never used the 950. the 1000 or the 2000 more so are what i'd recommend and go pretty cheap these days. the s20 isn't worth it unless its really cheap. limited editing capabilities. one thing to think about getting one of these older samplers versus a newer one (like the mpc 1000 or even s5000) is connecting to a computer to edit or load samples. the old akais only have a scsi port, whereas the new ones have the usb. i'm a computer idiot but scsi has always sucked for me.
