Bruce Springsteen to induct U2 into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
NEW YORK (AP) — Bruce Springsteen is returning the favour to Bono.
U2’s talkative frontman, who gave memorable stream-of-consciousness speeches inducting Bob Marley and Springsteen into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will be saluted by Springsteen when the Boss inducts U2 next month.
Springsteen’s no slouch in the induction speech department: he slyly noted last year how inductee Jackson Browne’s audience always seemed to be filled with women.
Justin Timberlake will board the Love Train to pay tribute to the O’Jays in next month’s ceremony. B.B. King and Eric Clapton will team to induct bluesman Buddy Guy, Rod Stewart will speak about When a Man Loves a Woman singer Percy Sledge and Neil Young will honour the Pretenders.
The 20th annual ceremony will be held March 14 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. Highlights will be televised March 19 on VH1.

The Pretenders? Seriously??? I mean, I've got nothing against them, but...

Huk-L, Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm still annoyed that Percy Sledge is in there. One great single and a few middling records doth not a Hall Of Fame career make. He's got as much business there as LaMarr Hoyt has in the Baseball HOF.

I've said this in other threads, but a future mission of mine is to lobby for Three Dog Night and War to be inducted. *sigh*

Will this be Springsteen's first public speech since the election? I'm wondering about that b/c he acknowledged how much of his "celebrity capital" he was spending on it ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Why care about the Rock'n'Roll hall of fame? It's a lame mutual appreciation society that only serves the business interests of it's inductees (and participants).

everything, Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I initially read that as 'indict'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

It's interesting watching the putative goals of the organization seize up royally as the 25-year-limit hits the early eighties -- you can tell that for the next few years the only acts from that time they'll add will be REM and probably Metallica as they wait for Guns'n'Roses, Public Enemy and Nirvana to become eligible. Everything else will be more "Um, er, uh, older stuff, yeah!" It's a stupid organization, but the amazing paucity of knowledge on the part of the membership is a wonder to behold.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, of bands that released their first album between 1981 and 1988, I'm not sure I would vote anyone in aside from R.E.M., except maybe Culture Club (and I don't think they had a sustained enough career to justify inclusion).

(I'll have to think about the Metallica thing.)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

It's obvious that bands like the Specials, Human League or Buzzcocks have a much more enduring legacy in modern music than the Pretenders, not to mention more commercial success (at least in the UK). But since they don't fit any of the current North American radio formats, they aren't widely known. Maybe it should be renamed the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Familiarity?

everything, Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Of bands that had their first record from 1981-1988, REM and Metallica will definitey get in, they've both got the mix of popularity and credibility that the voters seem to like. Sonic Youth have a strong shot due to longevity and influence. Solo singers will have a much easier time: Madonna, John Mellencamp, and maybe even Steve Earle should make it.

This has nothing to do with my personal taste, this is just based on how the inductions tend to go. If it was up to me, there would be a Roxy Music wing, and Big Star would have their own pavillion.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait...The Smiths and The Cure will probably both make it as representatives of 1981-1987

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

buzzcocks fit more current north american radio formats than the pretenders

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

smiths will not go in

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

"buzzcocks fit more current north american radio formats than the pretenders "

Yep, as a template for half the emo punk bands out there. They don't get a lot of play though. "Classic Rock" formats plays "Middle of the Road" and "Brass In Pocket" ad nauseum.

everything, Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

seriously what's the last act to have a hit to owe much to the pretenders??? whereas 70% of current rock radio can be and has been traced back to buzzcocks.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Madonna is a dead lock, yeah -- slip up on my part there!

T. Rex aren't in yet = this whole thing is indeed fucked.

The Buzzcocks comments very OTM. Smiths, Cure, just about ANYTHING 'UK post punk' ain't happening. U2 is it. Curse the godless universe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Depeche Mode, maybe?

everything, Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I really want someone to tell the RnR HOF to fuck off while giving an acceptance speech. Maybe that's part of the criteria? induct those least likely to embarrass the organization?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

seriously what's the last act to have a hit to owe much to the pretenders???

the yeah yeah yeahs.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Depeche Mode, maybe?

Not a chance in hell.

Black Sabbath still aren't in, are they? And Ozzy keeps trashing the damn place and doesn't want to be on the ballot, god bless him. He pissed on the Alamo, he can piss on that place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

ned i think the cure will probably get in, other eighties = run dmc, ll cool j, beastie boys, public enemy. i'm not sure how much i'd hold my breath on any other eighties hip-hop.

o man fcc otm - oops!

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

elvis costello used to be all anti-rnrhof rhetoric too, it didn't hurt him. the only criteria basically is 'who does jann wenner like (james taylor, right this way sir)' and 'who can jann wenner be convinced 'ok i guess they mattered'' (ok i guess we can have two punk acts)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Mick Jagger will one day be inducted as a solo artist, I'm sure.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

As far as the influence of the Pretenders goes, Pernice Bros. covered "Talk of the Town" last tour, to pick one example. I see the Pretenders as pretty influential when it comes to the dad-rock end of contemporary indie.

Derek Krissoff (Derek), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)
for '80s locks, don't forget mick jagger! first solo album 1984.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

seriously what's the last act to have a hit to owe much to the pretenders???

Rush Limbaugh

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

haha

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

how fucking sad/hilarious is it that mick jagger solo stands a much better chance of going in than the stooges or kraftwerk???

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

are all you guys british or something? remember its an american rock'n'roll hall of fame, and they only bring in a handful of artists a year.. its a pretty limited / committee driven event

you don't see me complaining because the clean and toy love haven't been inducted...

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah the key thing to remember here is JANN WENNER

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Surely Iggy is in there though?

everything, Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

its an american rock'n'roll hall of fame

not sure what you mean by that unless you're talking about its location. rock and roll IS an american art form, but the hall of fame has plenty of brits in it. which doesn't mean it isn't a silly place, 'cause it is. i'm just not sure what you're trynig to say.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Pretenders are the most deserving out the entire lot!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

you think jt could name five o'jays songs before getting this honor?

not that i can, but i'm not goin' there

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

seriously what's the last act to have a hit to owe much to the pretenders???

the yeah yeah yeahs.

and the white stripes, that one song sounds like "middle of the road."

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

For some reason I thought the Cure were already in.

Meanwhile, smacking myself for forgetting about Madonna entirely in my earlier post.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

yknow i'm letting this whole 'white stripes and yeah yeah yeahs have had actual hit songs' thing slide without contestation so let's not push it too much

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

iggy's not in, probably won't come near it. remember people: bowie took forever to get in. james taylor slid in no problem. the velvet underground BARELY made it in in their last year of eligibility and even then only after the press were all 'WTF' about it. JANN WENNER ppl.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

what White Stripes song sounds like "Middle of the Road"??

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

i think he's saying the 'na na na na' part of 'fell in love with a girl' sounds like the 'oo oo ooo oo' part of 'mor'

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Justin Timberlake will board the Love Train to pay tribute to the O’Jays in next month’s ceremony.

What? Weren't they inducted last year by that actor on the WB?

What's next, the Cure by Conor Oberst? Husker Du by that blonde guy from Nickelback? A special Morrissey tribute from America's Latino community?

The whole thing is just stupid.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

A special Morrissey tribute from America's Latino community

I think this would be beautiful and I would watch and probably tape it.

dan. (dan.), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Can we all agree not to mention the RARHOF again? Apart from the 2 films they had when we went, it was as drab as I expected it to be. Like a wax museum in Niagara Falls or something. And who's in the hall and who's not insults those who are in who deserves to be in a place that claims to be such a place.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Well yes, but for many listeners, the idea of an artist being recognized by a so-called hall of fame is where it's at. To me it's nothing like the baseball or hockey ones.

a future mission of mine is to lobby for Three Dog Night and War to be inducted. *sigh*

Agreed. Three Dog Night had so many big hits, at least in the US, and War has been one of the best things that ever came through my headphones.
