Well, technically you were more likely to hear twin leads with the editions of the Mac featuring Peter Green/Danny Kirwan and Bob Weston/Bob Welch. Buckingham being the only axeman in the band on "I'm So Afraid."

George Smith, Friday, 25 February 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

So there's lots of dueling guitar on Fleetwood Mac's "Boston Tea Party" box.

Blackfoot, too -- heavy southern band with two axes into the twin lead guitar thing.

George Smith, Friday, 25 February 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, on one end of the spectrum you've Thin Lizzy dual leads all throughout the catalog. Start with "Cowboy Song" and go from there.

OR

Hüsker Dü's "Pink Turns To Blue" one of my favorite solos of all-time.

no comment on "Hotel California,"

Ha. A friend of mine has a saying, that every time a guitar solo line is played and then doubled a third higher, an angel smiles.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Wishbone Ash was an early twin guitar band. But yeah, Thin Lizzy & Allmans is where I would start looking.

I like the smiling angel bit.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Metallica - Master of Puppets

I sat in my bedroom for hours trying to learn the dueling solo, by the time I finally did I stopped liking Metallica.

rob mackey (mackey), Friday, 25 February 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

er, "Mountain Jam," that is.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Queensryche's guitarists each had their own channels on the albums. One was always heard in your left ear, the other in the right. I thought that was cool as shit when I was 14, but now it smacks of egomaniacal behavior.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 25 February 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Damn right, that thing is hackles-raising.

i was startled to see that i had got all the way to the bottom of the thread without anyone mentioning Television. and then they did.

Lee (fsharp), Friday, 25 February 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

But Television isn't twin guitar leads tho is it? The lead parts are always played separately and not in unison.

Fleetwood Mac had three at its peak: Green, Kirwan & Jeremy Spencer.

Black Oak Arkansas had three lead guitarists, too, but I'll leave them to Chuck/Scott/Don/George to dissect.

"Can You Hear me Knocking
Earl, where? "

During that long solo part there is quite a bit of dual guitar soloing that interweave a bit like an Allmans jam. During the climax of that break the sax and both guitars matchup on the riff a couple of times, once they build up and breakdown, then the second time they ride it to the end.

Is it "Loving You Sunday Morning" by Scorpions that's got a fantastic unravelly dual guitar solo. C'mon kids. Fucking Scorpions!!!

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Saturday, 26 February 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

King Crimson, 1981-present. The interlocking guitars from 81-84 are pretty awesome. "Frame by Frame" is the first song that comes to mind, but all three albums are the bee's nuts.

i think i'm growing up

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

holy fuck, Pink Floyd's 'Dogs' brought back so many memories. i haven't listened to this song in over 10 yrs but i remember every note. that harmonic squealy part in the guitar solo still makes me cringe with joy.

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Dick Wagnerr and Steve Hunter, all over Rock 'n' Roll Animal. and Lou Reed Live.

-- Johnny Fever

Sorry Johnny, but I couldn't agree less. Most folks couldn't care less, but there's also obsessive anal-retentive folks like myself who NEED to know these things! It's a non-issue if the two guitarists are distinct & distinctive enough to be easily identified by ear (Allman/Betts, Verlaine/Lloyd), and it doesn't matter *much* if they're equal enough in talent/style to be fairly interchangeable (Tipton/Downing), but what about players with unique styles, who you've never heard play by themselves or in any other context except with their counterpart so you don't know who's who? I've practically given myself ulcers over the years, fretting (ha) over not knowing which parts were played by Thurston Moore and which by Lee Ranaldo, or Harkleroad/Cotton or Shelley/Diggle or etc. I wanna know!

Far as harmonized twin-leads are concerned, I've never liked that sound much, don't know why, just a personal thing. It was nice once in a while, but seemed kinda monotonous when done to excess. Seemed like Iron Maiden had to cram a harmony part into every single song they did, like it was their duty.

So would Allman Brothers be the closest American approximation of Wishbone Ash? I have At Fillmore East but never got into it. Maybe I need to hear Idlewild South or Eat A Peach or something.

I was never much into hair metal but I slways loved the interplay between Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson on Night Ranger's better songs.

Gillis' whammy bar-happy solos would have been too much if he were the lone guitarist, but set off against Jeff Watson's clean crisp speed, ti works very well, and made them one of the best pop-metal bands of the 80's.

SecondBassman, Sunday, 24 February 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

So would Allman Brothers be the closest American approximation of Wishbone Ash?

close enough, though the Ash were more boogie/less blues. yes try Idlewild or the s/t ABB debut.

m coleman, Sunday, 24 February 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

one of my favorite twin-lead moments is phil manzanera's overdubbed solo on "serenade," especially the parts where he's just slightly out of tune with himself.

Lawrence the Looter, Sunday, 24 February 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

I've been listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy lately. Awesome stuff. They had to have been the biggest influence on Iron Maiden, sometimes I feel like I'm actually listening to Maiden.

I've been playing the shit out of Wishbone Ash's Pilgrimage. Anyone who's never checked it/them out needs to do themselves a favour.

narlus spectre (gnarly sceptre), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Probably inspired by Thin Lizzy:

Belle and Sebastian "Hang Loose" has a pretty sweet twin lead.

Moodles, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Frank Zappa and Adrian Belew do a cool twin solo in "City of Tiny Lites"

Moodles, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Even though there's only one of him in the band, Tom Scholz/Boston kind of owns this stuff. The end of "Peace of Mind," where he just keeps adding harmonies, is great!

I think he made the comment about David Bowie - Black Country Rock

disdick (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

Another good one: Humble Pie - Walk on Gilded Splinters. I wish the whole song was just that one lick.

disdick (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

(course that one is actually doubled in 6ths; inverted 3rds really)

disdick (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

I'm so glad I brought Powerslave with me to work today - 'Aces High' is truly the song that can make demons and angels smile alike.

BARONESS! The Blue Record (or Blue Album or whatever) might be my favorite record of 2009, might be my favorite metal record of the decade, and IS fucking crazy great plus stuffed to the gills with twin/harmonized guitar leads. Such a nice sound, and as an album, it's up there with the best of Thin Lizzy & Maiden (not that it sounds a great deal like either).

from alcoholism to fleshly concerns (contenderizer), Monday, 16 November 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

It's my fave 2009 album. Seeing them friday night at Bowery Ballroom, so psyched.
