A Lurker Speaks:

I'm not expert enough to judge precisely how good the writing is on this board - but what I would like to say is that although I've avidly read music mags for the decade, about a year ago I lost interest altogether, and it's no coincidence that this coincided with my discovering ILM.

Q, the NME, and Rolling Stone were the first to go. I persisted a bit longer with Uncut and Mojo, but these days I wouldn't even consider shelling out four pounds for either of those publications. Not that it's a matter of this board being free - you can get Q and NME for free online, but how many people who are familiar with ILM ever bother with those dreary sites - I don't, even if greenspan is down for the day.

I have my favourite posters obviously (Dave Q, Ally and Mark S) but it wouldn't really be fair to pick those three out as the reason I keep coming back - there's another ten or twenty posters who I consistently enjoy and then there's all the occasional posters who chip in when they have something particularly wothwhile to contribute. And it's this lively debate and exchange of ideas as much as the many fine writers who frequent this place which makes ILM so endlessly fascinating and enjoyable.

In short, I'd like to say thanks to everyone for making my work days so much more bearable than they would be otherwise. And now to the question - how many other people here feel as strong an attachment to this site as I do, and why?

Oops, it's the first time I've posted and I cocked it up a bit. The thread title should have read: "How Good Is ILM?"

bob roberts, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this title = bettah

ally and dave q are in love with me

mark s, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everybody ALWAYS likes Ally best, hello? Anyhow, welcome to the forum, even if you hate me.

I heart ILM just because of the discussion and the lack of editorial bias. I think all magazines should have more than one person reviewing everything, forum style, because then people would get a better feel for the music in question, I think. I also hate ILM because now I never get any work done.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't I the one who pointed you here, Sean? You should just hate me instead. Focus your anger. ;-)

I was inadvertantly summoned to ILM to defend Killing Joke from an unjust slagging by whistle-headed teen-pop fans and lamentably self- styled "thug" hip hop fans, but ended up staying for much the same reasons as everyone else — it's both an interesting place to learn about new bands, albums, genres, etc. and a fun place to engage in debates.

Yeah, you were sorta the one character of that whole bunch to remain. Do they still talk about us and their attempt at a takeover? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, I'd like to take it all back and claim my undying hatred for Ned whenever I find it impossible to do my work. There. Are you happier now, Ned?

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I've been derided by The Gathering (the Killing Joke list) on occaision of succumbing to the "inherent geekiness" of ILM, but I don't really find anything particularly geeky about it. I may often dissagree with lots of the artists touted here (Destiny's Child et al.), but it's never boring, and it's usually pretty informative.

Are you happier now, Ned?

I HAVE A REASON TO KEEP LIVING.

There's something I could say about this, but somehow it says itself. :-)

it's never boring, and it's usually pretty informative

Yay us!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A band-specific mailing list calling out one of its members for subcuming to another Internet institution deemed "inherently geeky" is a bit of useless redundancy, isn't it?

Or is that what Nedward alludes to by saying jack squat? I must learn to master the subtle art of shutting up.

David Raposa, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I found you last week by accident. I have done no work since then. ILM is a tonic; many of the posters write wittily and eloquently, and the range of tastes reflected within this forum are so broad that it's impossible to come here and not hear about something new, something that I might not pick up on otherwise.

misterjones, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I've got something to say I actually contribute to a magazine that I love reading. (And I sometimes contrubute when I've got nothing to say). As someone relatively new to the net this is revolutionary and wonderful. Mind you I still find the telephone a marvellous thing even though I have been using it all my life... I'm better informed now than I was when I first discovered ILM, which was approx 9/10 months ago. How long has ILM been in existence? Is there a film equivalent?

Daniel, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ILM's been going since August 2000. There's not a separate film forum but films get talked about a lot on I Love Everything (replace the word "music" in the front page URL with the word "everything" to be transported to this magical domain).

Tom, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mainly stayed on ILE for a long time but recently I feel I've gotten into ILM alot more. I have to say, and I even said this to my friend someday, I'm learning more here than I am in college. Thinking about music far more than I was, and this is exciting because it's only happened in the last month and a half or so. I've been starting threads here for a change, and I like it. Also special mention must go to Tim for managing to (a)have heard everything and (b)have something smart to say about it. there, that's enough being nice for today.

Ronan, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If ILM can wean Ronan off Ryan Adams it will all have been worthwhile.

Andrew L, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You've fucking ruined Gold for me. All of you. I feel guilty every time I put it on.

Ronan, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bob: i have similar experience and keep telling it to people at a drop of a hat. in 2001 i stopped buying music papers, read ILM and consequently picked up on much more interesting new and old music than ever before. spent way more on CDs than before, even though i download mp3s for free at work. discussions usually tickle some interest.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or is that what Nedward alludes to by saying jack squat?

Zing.
