I didn't know you could fill one CD with good Suede songs. I loved the first album at the time and some of "Dog Man Star" but their shtick got old fast. Still, here we go:

The Drowners
My Insatiable One
The Wild Ones
Stay Together
Pantomime Horse
Metal Mickey
Trash
Still Life
Animal Nitrate
We Are The Pigs

i really liked suede when i first heard them in my oh-so-sweet teenage years. in a way, they're still a great influence (mainly bernard butler) but i wonder why they're amongst those bands people dismiss/are ashamed of. while i totally understand why people would find their music not very revolutionary or whatever, i don't really see the reason for all the hating (to quote r-kelly, another great influence !).

In no order as well but only with Mr. Bernard Butler:

The Asphalt World
My Insatiable One
Stay Together
Heroine
The Drowners
Sleeping Pills
Still Life
To the Birds
New Generation
Modern Boys

The self titled does sound dated but still think Dog Man Star is one of the best albums from the 90’s. It’s such a Rock ’n’ Roll record with a cover that still confuses me, too many drugs, and a band splitting at the seems. Brett’s subject matter is so dark and gloomy with Bernard playing the guitar like a man possessed. Originally, "The Asphalt World" was a 21-minute song buy was cut down. I still wonder it they, or at least Britt, was into smack because of the song "Heroine" but could be about a girl.

They played, at the Palace in Hollywood, during the Suede tour when Bernard was still in the band and did a version of "Brass In Pocket (I’m Special)" that still ranks as one of my most memorable concert moments. It was brilliant with Britt getting all sexed up and Bernard going off with his guitar. I still haven't found their version of this song and need to start looking for it again.

The Beautiful Ones
The Drowners
uhh.. that's all I know by them!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 26 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC, their version of "Brass in Pocket" was on the NME 40th Anniversary comp.

Everyone here who assumes that Suede jumped the shark after Bernard left needs to hear "Coming Up", i.e. the flashier, catchier, more heartbreaking sequel to their debut.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that they still had their moments (some great B-sides as well) after Bernard left but consider them a different band and personally call them London Suede now. It’s similar to Blur these days, the name is the same but the band is different without Graham Coxon.

Thanks for the tip on "Brass In Pocket" and thanks to P2P networks where I hope to unearth this little gem.

Good way of putting it. I still think it is a much more successful album than Dog Man Star, which may have a couple of higher highs but has some equally lower lows.

"Dog Man Star" treads a completely different path than any other Suede album. "Coming Up" covers a lot of the same ground as the debut, but does it better.

That's why comparing Blur to Suede vis a vis their lead guitarists leaving the band doesn't really work. Sure, no band remains the same once a key member decides to leave. But Blur became a drastically different sounding band once Graham left. Suede's sound didn't change much. "Dog Man Star" was Bernard's diversion, and once he left, it was back to the regularly scheduled program.

Good point, and I added personally for this very reason, it my own little thing adding London (along with the US record companies). I never added the to Verve because it just one of my things that I do. My point was they lost 50% of their songwriting team and was a big part of what they did. In fact they replaced him with two people and who’s to say what direction they would of went if he stayed a bit longer. The same singer and, granted, sound was similar so I understand where you are coming from. When the Cure kicked out Tolhurst or Oasis doing the same thing to McCarroll it was very minor and didn’t make a difference. Butler was far more important because he was part of the songwriting. With Blur, Graham was around much longer so yes you have much more to draw from but was the first example that popped into my head.

No luck with "Brass In Pocket" on slsk and if anyone has a copy of this song can you meet me in the I Love Music Room and let me get it from you? I use the same name and would appreciate it.
