You guys always seem to know more than me about everything. So i thought i'd ask just how big your record collections are.

Q1. How many CD's do you own?

Q2. How many LP's do you own?

Q3. How old are you?

Q4. Whats the most number of albums you own for one band/artist?

Q5. Name two of your favourite records that sound nothing like each other.

Now we'll see just how muso we all are!

dmun, Friday, 25 February 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a strong feeling that this question may have been asked before....multiple times.

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, i'll answer my own question, i'm sure most of you have loads more.

Q1. About 600 CD's

Q2. About 200 LP's

Q3. 21

Q4. Sadly i have 13 Iron Maiden albums. But dont listen to them (honest)

Q5. "Silver Apples" and Hawksley Workman - "Last Night we were the Delicious Wolves."

dmun, Friday, 25 February 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Q1: I don't know.
Q2: Again I don't know.
Q3: 31
Q4: I don't know, probably 20 dEUS related CDs.
Q5: No New York and Rumours

I am not a muso.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, I used the search thingy just like Ned told me and nothing came up! So heres a new thread!

dmun, Friday, 25 February 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

1 - no idea, but counting burns probably between 3000-4000
2 - not sure, but much fewer. Closer to 50 than 100
3 - 35
4 - Probably Ornette Coleman, in the 40 range
5 - Steve Reich "Tehillim" and Fishbone "Truth and Soul"

Austin (Austin), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No, dont count burns. Downloading is dirty.

dmun, Friday, 25 February 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Q6. How many mp3s do you have on your hard drive(s)?

1. maybe 650 cds
2. maybe 500 lps
3. 33
4. i inherited like 20 beatles albums from my uncle's collection
5. george winston "autumn" and big & rich "horse of a different color"
bonus #6 - 6,696 here and at least that many at home (many overlapping)

john'n'chicago, Friday, 25 February 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, I used the search thingy just like Ned told me and nothing came up! So heres a new thread!

Wonders never do cease!

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I know there've been threads like this before, but anyway:

1) ~600
2) ~50
3) 32
4) probably Bob Dylan (about 13)
5) Mahler's 2nd Symphony and Howlin Wolf's rocking chair album

o. nate (onate), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of them I burned from libraries and friends, not downloading. I guess that's still dirty, though.

Austin (Austin), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

1) 850
2) 25
3) 25
4) Bob Dylan or the Beatles or something
5) Mark de gli Antoni - Horse Tricks/Erykah Badu - Mamas Gun

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere on Rockcritics.com there's an interview w/ Chuck Eddy where he says that he keeps something like 300 CDs in his place. He's heard a million albums but doesn't feel the need to keep them all. I don't know whether that's still true (if Chuck reads this perhaps he can clear it up) but that struck me as an appealing idea. It's the difference between a river and a reservoir.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

1) About 330 CD albums, maybe 30 CD singles, and about 50 freebie CDs from magazines.

2) LPs I haven't counted but I would estimate at about 30 or 40, plus a similar number of 7"s and 10"s.

3) 22

4) About 13 or 14 for Dylan, but that's because he's released so many. If you add up all the Wu-affiliated albums I have it's probably a similar number.

5) NWA - Straight Outta Compton, and Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground

6) I think about 1500

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My husband has opted for the following: import the CDs you listen to and *dump* the CDs in the attic, the rest can stay in the studyroom. We'll *have* to do this because there's not much room left for new records. :-(

3) 28
4) maybe Sonic Youth? I have most of their albums. Actually probably Billy Childish if I'm allowed to count all of his various bands
5) Softies - It's Love, Napalm Death - Scum

When I was working at Ole M*ss, I pitched the idea of a Zappa radio show to the campus station mgt. and wrote a nice letter to the Barfko-Swill address at the same time. A few weeks later a massive box arrived from Ryko with all the FZs on Ryko and Barking Pumpkin. (This was late 94 or early 95.) It was like the best Christmas morning ever.

Q1 + Q2 dunno, but they're 95% vinyl, occupy about 30 Pickfords boxes and cost almost a grand to ship from UK to singapore
Q3 28 but answering this question has added 2 years to my age
Q4 20 or so by Cajmere/Green Velvet including remixes (Kerri Chandler or Lil Louis probably running a close second)
Q5 Force and Styles "Heart of Gold" and Chopin's Nocturnes

Mr Monket (apn99), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Q1-2: The embarrassing thing is I do know exactly how many of each I've got (I need to know for insurance purposes) but I'm not going to give out numbers here because it would sound posey.

Q3: Far, far(t)oo old.

Q4: Derek Bailey - 228 CDs as leader, co-leader, improvisor, co-improvisor, sideman, organiser etc.

Q5: All my records connect in one way or another so it would be disingenuous for me to claim that Xenakis sounded different from the Wombles.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The reason I don't know: they are scattered around. There were times I could count'em all because they were all in the same place. Now they are in different places - I even have a box somewhere in the uh bike storage room. I rrrrrreally hate this as I'm very anal about (especially) my records but I have learned to ignore this (read: Thom's influence).

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

correction: that should be 228 Derek Bailey records in total 'cos quite a lot of them are on vinyl...

Some of my collection is in my study, some of it at my mum's in Glasgow and yet others still in storage in Oxford (????!!!??).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Q1. I have no idea

Q2. haha none, I am too young! (actually this is a lie, a PR company once sent me an LP instead of the CD by mistake once, but I don't know what it sounds like as I have no record player)

Q3. 22

Q4. Don't know the exact number, it'd be Tori Amos though (assorted singles pushing the total up).

Q5. Britney Spears, Britney; Diamanda Galás, The Plague Mass
