I heard a snippet last night and loved it. Where the hell can I find it?

Chaka Khan and Scritti Politti together? Really? Wow.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I have no info on it a hand right now, it sounds like a C&P'85 track with Chaka on vocals.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no "love of a lifetime" on CP85

Love Of A Lifetime  (Non-Scritti Politti)
Chaka Khan - from her Destiny album.
Produced by Gartside, Gamson & Mardin.
Written by Gartside and Gamson.
Background vocals by Green Gartside.

I know it was the first single from "Destiny," but I wondered whether the albm was readily available, or if the track is on a compilation.

I know its not on C&P'85 but that it wouldn't be out of place on that album. I have the 12" of it. How close was this release to the Prince-penned I Feel For You?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Found a Chaka discog that says Destiny is from 1986, I Feel For You was 1984. I'm still going "wow" about this. Definitely want to hear the track.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ah peepee, i misunderstood, sorry.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

no problem, jed.

This typin' ain't nearly as good as the talkin'.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You own the 12", peepee? Fork it over!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Love of a Liftime the only Gartside, Gamson & Mardin production on Destiny???

Dan's magic!

peepee (peepee), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantastic song.

From what I can see, the only other place it's available besides Destiny is on a JCI compilation called It's Only Soul 1985-1989. Don't know whether either one is still in circulation.

SCRITTI ALERT!
Green also wrote/arranged/produced(?) Al Jarreau's "L is for Lover" around the same time as Chaka. Both are seeped in Scritti juice.
Enjoy,
Gary

The version of "I Feel For You" was initially planned as a duet between Chaka Khan and Green. Green had a cold and couldn't make it to the studio. "It was rather a big hit, wasn't it?" he said, rather sniffily.

john lewis (johnnylewis), Saturday, 26 February 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, not as good as I had hoped. Would have been better if he sang it I think - there's some great melody in there that got lost or something. I Feel For You is better.

one year passes...
Can someone repost? I could never download it last year.

I wasn't aware of the existence of this track. Thanks for making me aware of it. Great song. And, yes, it does indeed sound like Scritti Politti with a female R&B singer replacing Green. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 May 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

Better rarity to seek out: Scritti covering "I Don't Know Why I Love You" for one of the British Electric Foundation albums.

See also Adele Bertei - When it's over. Scritti written and produced as I recall. And excellent to boot.

Green also appeared in the "Love Of A Lifetime" video...I can recall a college roomate of mine laughing out loud when we first saw this (Green was well into his fashion-disaster era, and I think he had a ridiculous hat on)...I said "hey!...you can't laugh...this is the guy from Scritti Politti!"...didn't make a diff...
