Hair Stylist, Salon, or Barbershop Music (not Barbershop Quartets)

I went to a new salon today, because my stylist moved to a new job. ("Stylist." I get the same basic haircut I was getting long before I started with this stylist.) One of the guys in the shop was talking excitedly about having tickets to see Garbage. I heard the Beatles' "Help" but there seemed to be some problem with the CD player or something, since it was quiet most of the time (or maybe they just don't always have music playing) and I thought I overheard something like "The CD is in there, but it's not playing." Before I left, someone put on some clubby music that sounded pretty good, though I don't know who it was, let alone exactly what genre.

Barbershop = radio all the time (I swear I've never heard a CD at a barbershop)
Salon = hipster music (Boards of Canada, a comp of Neptunes tracks, King Tubby were all played at the last salon I went to)

Barbershop = radio all the time

The owner of the last salon I went to had some sort of CD jukebox going. My stylist told me that whenever he was out for a while, they would turn on the radio instead.

The barbershop where I used to get $10 haircuts used to play an oldies station constantly, with lots of Sinatra. It was a cliche "barbershop that time forgot," with two old barbers in a room in the basement of an old apartment building. It looked like it hadn't been significantly renovated since the 60's. (I miss it a little, but when I started greying a little bit, earlier than I'd expected, I wanted to go to someone who would seriously talk about what I could talk to about what I could do about my hair. Sadly, just getting a more expensive cut has made me feel better about it, but I guess that sort of silliness helps keep my stylist in business, and I kind of like her. She's a little ditzy, but she seems more genuinely nice than I'd expect of someone in the business of dealing with superficialities.)

salonica: slightly glitchy synth based pop music, often with traditional lyrics. usually unoffensive.

"The last george michael makes for great salonica."
