what are the disadvantages to running pro-tools with a good apple laptop as opposed to a good apple desktop? the advantages are obvious: portability and price. but what would i be losing?

If you're talking about new machines, even the low end of the G5 desktop line will be significantly faster than any of the Powerbooks. This means the ability to run more plugins, the ability to play more tracks simultaneously and faster overall performance.

If you shop smart, you can get a G5 with a lot of RAM and a decent (non-Apple) display for less than $2000.

I will say this...if you're committed to ProTools, I would avoid the MBox in favor of one of the firewire-based systems like the Digi002.

i was in fact thinking of the digi002. i'm committed to pro-tools only for compatibility with my pro-tools-only partner.

The advantage with the laptop (I have a 17-inch Powerbook which rocks) is that you can't make music anywhere... if I have a thought while I'm half asleep, I can pick up the laptop, open Logic, and make music while sitting in bed... it doesn't become "I'm going to be making music now", it just happens whenever.
