Malaria! and Die Hausfrauen

I am in love with a record! by this band. I found it on the block outside my house for $1 and thought it looked good. It's great! that link up there says they only ever released a 7" and a 12" EP, both in 1981. The EP is what I got on the street. Songs with names like "Defunkt Hunk" and "Suburban Incest". I swear, it's so good. I'm going to MP3-ify some stuff and put it up for you to listen to.

ANYWAYS I do some digging on the Interweb and from some radio station's playlist it looks like they might have done a record with Malaria!, the band that wrote "Kaltes Klares Vasser" (that Chicks on Speed covered a couple of years ago). I haven't heard anything by Malaria[!] but I will like them if they sound like Die Hausfrauen. My question: is this collaboration real (it might be called "New York/Berlin")? Any other German/Czech bands around that were - or are - GRATE like this?

Here are two of the songs. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Defunkt Hunk

Midnight Rain

no one has anything to say about my favorite band?????????

:(

If I get two (2) responses I will mp3-ify the other two songs. Otherwise The Housewives will have only these two (excellent) songs above to represent them for the entire future of the Interweb. Maybe it's better that way; I'll be able to play "Suburban Incest" or "Bellevue Affair" for foax and they won't automatically roll their eyes and start ironically mouthing the words.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll give 'em an ear tomorrow, fret not...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you, Ned. (that's one! c'mon folks they've got a CLARINET player!)

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, my curiosity is piqued! I'll download 'em when I get in from work.

Bill E, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Except I won't, as they're bin-hex.hqx'd

D'oh!

Bill E, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aieee! those motherf*cking Apple servers! i didn't mean for it to do that. do you have a de-BinHexer you can use? doesn't winzip do that? i know stuffit can handle it. pah, sorry. i don't have any other file space. or... do i? *goes away for awhile *

Happily, I have a Mac and Stuffit and am listening to both now.

"Midnight Rain" -- more conventional than I would have thought, though perhaps if I knew more Nina Hagen and the like I could make better comparisons. Stentorian reggae-tinged stiff pop/rock oddness of the time, pretty and weird -- I do like the random chimes or whatever they might be.

"Defunkt Hunk" -- I like the clarinet a bit more on this one. Enjoyably dismissive with reference to the titular character. Yeah, this one's fun.

Nice find, Tracer. :-)

* comes back *

straight-up mp3s

"stentorian"!! Your capsule reviews have made me unbelievably glad, Ned. "DH" is really enjoyable. I don't know what to compare it with either. Maybe the Slits or Velvet Underground. My housemate HATES it (NB the fact he heard it 5 times while I tried to get the recording right couldn't have helped; he loves VU and ver Slits) He says it can't decide if it's at 45 or 33. I yell and tell him that he's a de-hunkt frunk! - he waves his hands - "he's lost all his spunk!" - he hides. (side "C" track 1 and side "R" track 2 comin up!)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer,

Thanks for sorting that out - I'm downloading now & will report back!

Suburban Incest and Bellevue Affair at filepile

They'll only be up for seven (7) days though. Bellevue Affair suffers somewhat next to the others but i like it for "he had psychological problems that no doctors could solve / he was locked in his apartment so he had to eat his dog"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I ahve just realized that Die Hausfrauen are the inspiration for every Tim Burton movie up to and including Batman.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer,

Thanks for filepilin' those tracks.

Verdict: I like! Nice, jerky post-punk stuff which I love, with the drums falling over themselves & the clarinet vaguely reminiscent (to me at least) of X-Ray Spex's saxophone!

One of these tracks (at least) will get an outing at my next New Wave/Post-Punk night.

Thanks again!

I R CHUFFED

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So what's the deal with Filepile if I can't download the durn things?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They want you to register but are very clever about not telling you. Here the binhexed files on my iDisk:

Bellevue Affair

Suburban Incest

More research turns up a possible "split LP" with Malaria, called "New York Berlin". I have no idea what songs are on it - it could well be these same songs b/w Malaria songs I don't know.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually Ned, I think they might have closed off new registrations to FilePile at the moment. A friend of mine tried to register a few weeks ago but was unable to do so.

A shame, as I could then pester you to put up those Disco Inferno tracks that seem to be so popular round here at the moment!

Bill E, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask some of the Secret Friends. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five years pass...

So can we talk about Malaria! a bit more?

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sure. (One of them ended up starting the Monika label, IIRC.)

Yes, I came here through Gudrun Gut. I've been hearing good things about her new album.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

the gudrun album is one of my faves of the year! worth the wait.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm listening to the stuff she's put up on her myspace page... 'Rock Bottom Riser' is pretty terrific.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Oh, there is a Malaria! thread but no one's actually talking about Malaria! here...

Anyway, I found this, as per the title
