Actually, Illuminations is kind of electronic in its own way. The weird voice treatments kind of make it the Medulla of its day.

I've always liked the song "Codeine". My Mom is way into BSM.

Where is the love for BUFFY ST. MARIE??
you could start by getting her name right
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)
She lives in Hawaii now, and raises goats. Absolutely amazing woman.
Lots of great videos on the Youtube,

New album is WAY better than you'd expect (though I could do without "America the Beautiful". And she's touring Europe soon. Hopefully expanded USA dates to follow.
She's still got it, and she hasn't lost the thread. What an amazing person.

^ Yes, yes yes yes. Totally trumps anything else she's recorded in the last 20 years.

Great interview with her on Democracy Now last month. Worth checking out (and yah, her new album is terrific)
― Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 21 November 2009 06:11 (sixteen years ago)
Beyond Illuminations which is rightly regarded as a mindfuck for the ages, what else is worth checking out (and I'll even acknowledge here that I know nothing else she's done resembles Illuminations, but I don't care)?

the first vanguard 2-album best of comp of the 60's stuff is really solid. probably find it cheap on cd or vinyl somewhere. and there was a volume 2 released right after that, but i don't know if its on cd. if you listen to records her albums aren't very costly used. i like most of the 60's stuff. and the earlier 70's stuff too like moonshot and quiet places. changing woman from 1975 is essential for the song "mongrel pup".
her 1992 album coincidence and likely stories contains one of her most harrowing songs, "bury my heart at wounded knee". that song always gives me a chill up my spine. it even gave me a chill when the indigo girls performed it on david letterman! it's that kind of song. powerful and rough.

is it true that she hates Illuminations
― Turangalila, Saturday, 21 November 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)
^ I asked her about (my favourite song) "The Dream Tree", and she said she simply hadn't thought about that album for a long time. I don't think she hates it by any stretch, but the songs on it are very different from her other stuff, not just for the tape loops, but for their content.
― Tourtière (Ówen P.), Saturday, 21 November 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)
The Vanguard best of cd has been reissued with both albums on a single disc. That's a great place to start.
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 22 November 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)
almost bought a copy of that vanguard comp the other day, but it was kinda beat up and cost $12 - did listen to it, and was disappointed that the electronic elements in the illuminations tracks were more along the lines of sonic detailing

Quiet Places is worth tracking down just for the opener "Why You Been Gone So Long" which is basically her channeling a Tina Turner-style stomper.

what's the best cover version of "codeine"?
― the late great, Friday, 9 January 2015 21:22 (eleven years ago)
I like the Janis Joplin version, but I'm most partial to the original.
I keep trying to listen to Running for the Drum but just keep playing No No Keshagesh over and over.
― kruezer, Saturday, 10 January 2015 23:40 (eleven years ago)
I like various lunkheaded heavy rock versions of Codeine, but the original is definitely best.

Charlatans version is cool too.
The Leaves' version is great:

The accused prepared and placed in the window of his place of business a display consisting primarily of a large United States flag three feet by five feet in size, which was suspended horizontally in the back of the window and below which were placed other objects among which was a goblet filled with pinkish liquid. Attached to that goblet by a nearly invisible piece of wire was a paper representation of a large drop of blood, so positioned that it appeared to be dripping from one of the red stripes of the flag into the goblet. Testimony developed that neither this object nor anything else was itself physically attached to the flag. The flag was placed alone in the window and displayed that way for Flag Day, June 14th. A day or two later the other objects were added to the display after which the arrest occurred on June 17, 1970.Many photographs of the window and its display were taken and exhibited at trial. They showed therein various posters which read "Legalize freedom," "End the war now," "Another family for peace," "Pray for peace," "Viet Nam, love it or leave it," and below the goblet a charred scrap of paper on which the words "take a little drink from the liar's cup" (a quotation from a song), were inscribed.

Love her elliptical voice. Also love Illuminations and that Vanguard Best of.Need to get some more of her stuff.
People into Illuminations might also like Annette Peacock's I'm The One.

Just seen that there's a 2cd compi of the 70s lps for MCA called The Pathfinder. Apparently came out in 2014 on True North records though not sure what that would mean in terms of quality. Amazon does have soundbites which do sound pretty ok but not sure how much of a guide that is.
