really now, shouldn't there be more discussion of this band, who make the claim that they are the world's longest running rock band: bassist and guitarist formed band as pre-teens in 1961, beating the Stones? dunno about that, but only ZZ Top seems to beat them as the only band with no personnel changes at all since 1970…
anybody wanna talk about any hidden gems, or rilly anything besides "Twilight Zone" and "Radar Love"? I'm very intrigued…

Aside from Moontan and that Continuing Story... collection, I've still got scratchy vinyl copies of Seven Wishes and Switch and possibly Mad Love that I've had since the '80s, and it's probably been that long since I played 'em. I guess I liked them at the time, but I've virtually no memory what they sound like, aside from "She Flies On Strange Wings" and others duplicated on the compilation. Moontan always sounded to me like the work of five different bands, a bit of Pink Floyd, maybe some mid-period Amon Duul, I dunno.

christ, everything you mention sounds pretty nifty…me want a good comp…
― Veronica Moser, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, The Continuing Story of Radar Love (MCA, 1989) is a real good 12-song best-of CD (and I see it around fairly often, so not hard to find.)
On my vinyl shelf: Grab It In A Second, Moontan, To The Hilt All good and rocking and weird.

I've been jonesing for a copy of "Moontan" for years. I should probably just shut the fuck up and buy one. It is one of the great headphone records of my teenage years.
― kwhitehead, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)
I was gonna say that I actually prefer the Godz' cover of "Candy's Gone Bad" better than the original! Builds up to a nice apocalpytic noisy climax rather than wallowing in soupy Floyd-ness. But that's just me.

Listening to Moontan right now... christ, what a phenomenal album. Sure, 'Radar Love' is the big hit that everybody knows, but most of the rest of the album is equally as good, particularly the epics 'Are You Receiving Me?' and 'The Vanilla Queen' ... phenomenal, amazing drumming throughout from the underrated Cesar Zuiderwijk. Sadly, nothing else I've heard from them has been anywhere near as good on the whole.

I've often thought about this. They're undoubtedly one of the longest-running hard rock bands, but for some reason or other seem to have ended up with a kind of one hit wonder status here in the UK. I'm kinda hoping that someone on here from the Netherlands will be able to shed some light on the peaks and troughs of this bands career, because that's where they've (understandably) been most successful.

well i always thought this was amusingly tasteless

don't think you've been missing out much sinds the eighties. in the nineties they had a lot of succes with 2 unplugged albums playing their hits (Naked Truth and Naked II)
they tend to release a new album every 5 years or so. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/42/Tits_
I think Barry Hay lives on a tropical island, boozin' all day. Rinus and George are still neighbors (they started the band in their teens). BFF. They live in Belgium. Taxes you know. :)

Ended up in a late night listening session with my Dutch neighbors. It turns out that they were card carrying members of the Golden Earring fan club in the mid-70's. Anyway, if you haven't ever heard the "To the Hilt" LP I encourage you to track it down. Great synth work throughout. I am a long time fan of Moontan and this one has many of the same elements.

Apparently guitarist George Kooymans has MND aka Lou Gehrigs disease and will likely never play again, the band have officially called it quits.

So that's just over 50 years with the same line-up (drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk joined in 1970), therefore ZZ Top (1969 -) end up as winners of the same-bunch-of-dudes contest!
― faramir otm (Matt #2), Friday, 5 February 2021 20:22 (four years ago)
That’s sad news. I was just on a big Golden Earring listening fest a few weeks ago. What a long and varied career, lots of interesting records.

yeah gutted. My very first (rock) concert! (as probably thousands of dutchies can say)
― Ludo, Saturday, 6 February 2021 07:53 (four years ago)
memorable opening set for the who in 1974, with keith moon comically attempting the stick-twirling gymnastics he'd seen golden earring's drummer perform moments ago.

I didn't like "Moontan" that much, I'm sorry to report. Did they have any glam-style numbers? Can't find anything that - to my ears - bangs like their two US hits.
But congrats to ZZ Top, well-deserved for one of my favorite bands.

where am i to go now that i've gone too far?
― mookieproof, Friday, 17 December 2021 03:15 (three years ago)
I really really like this band, Moontan is real real good. is there a case to be made that they are the preeminent non U.S./UK/Aussie/Canuck 60s/70s rock act, prominent on the international scene outside of their own country and the U.S./UK/Aussie/Canuck axis? There's Scorpions, and who else? Who am I forgetting? We're talking bigger, more well known than Goblin, everybody who went to arena shows and read Creem knew about them, here.
And so I would like to get a comprehensive, Rhino or Ryko style 2 disc compilation with notes/scholarship that has cool shit other than "radar love" "twilight Zone" and "When the Lady Smiles." Near as I can tell, the below is closest thing to what I'm looking for… does anyone have any ideas re: physical releases that may better fit the bill for what I am seeking?

i always pair this group with fellow Dutch act Shocking Blue, so that's the first thing that comes to mind. i think beyond that you could maybe make an argument for Los Bravos, although they really seemed to have fizzled out by the end of the '60s
― budo jeru, Thursday, 19 September 2024 18:41 (one year ago)
Are Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream or Jean-Michel Jarre 'rock'? Not really I guess. So you could be right!
― jam up the pump (Matt #2), Thursday, 19 September 2024 18:47 (one year ago)
yknow, I think the krautrock/kosmiche thing does count as "rock" for the present purposes, but let's see if we can keep going past that…
― veronica moser, Thursday, 19 September 2024 19:33 (one year ago)
you could also add Accept. i think undoubtedly ABBA is the biggest group from that era from outside the anglosphere, although of course you wouldn't call them "rock"

There's the "Devil Made Us Do It" box set, that's as good an overview as anything.
