Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to listen to gygax on college radio

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think i fit in to his indie world,
Guided by Voices and Velocity Girl
Eric's Trip and Rocketship, Rancid, Rocket From the Crypt
Bikini Kill and Built to Spill its plain to see that I don't fit

He says my songs are too deep and gloomy,
He wishes that I could be more like Jenny Toomey
Just give me my Joni, My Nick, Neil, and Bob
You can keep your Tsunami, your Slant 6 and Smog

Whats the story?
He says
Whats the news?
He says the Silver Jews
is Heavenly hangup, is getting me down
and its making me wonder, why he's hangin around

Cause I don't fit into his indie scene,
Huggy Bear and Helium and Half-Japanese
Sebadoh and Sentridoh and Superchunk and I don't know
Doug and Lou and Calvin too and Kim and Kim and Kim and Kim

Yeah I'm stuck in the past and he's stuck on his four track
but I can't get through to his one track mind
Play and Record and Major Chord and maybe I will win his heart this
time
yeah maybe I'll win his heart this time

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What side of the Mississippi were you on, Stormy? I don't mean that in a contentious way - it'd just be interesting to know what was or wasn't being played in the four corners of the U.S.

At UConn's WHUS, we played loads of Archers of Loaf (and they, in turn, played a gig in our student union). And I would guess they got some time on UNC's airwaves...

nader (nader), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

My college station didn't start playing Pavement until Brighten the Corners, so...

To answer the question: Cracker, Sugar, Veruca Salt, Beck, Aimee Mann, PJ Harvey, De La Soul, Tribe called Qwest, Hole, Afghan Whigs....little to no Britpop until '97 or '98, when the movement was pretty much exhausted.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

He's an indie star
He knows Terry, Ken and Gerard
He's the only one I know who gets paid by Dutch East India...

um, I was (am) in Chicago, nader. actually the Archers thing is just a personal distaste; i really didn't care for them. I am sure that at least that first album did get some play at my station. But yeah, we were a pretty pretentious crew, it must be said. Lotta obscurantism, lotta 7" singles, that kind of thing...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Every band I can think of was namechecked in teeny's post. Of course, teeny and I did radio in the same town.

So, yeah. Don't forget Ditch Witch, the Revelators, and Molotov Grasshopper, I guess.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And just when I thought we were being pretentious playing Archers to a bunch of fratboys (who weren't listening anyway).

Lest I forget: Sebadoh, Polvo, Unwound (and yes, a lot of 7" singles I can't possibly recall). Air Miami, Jawbox, Stereolab,

nader (nader), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

...and a handful from teeny's post.

nader (nader), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Started back in '83
Started seeing things differently
Hardcore wasn't doing it for me....no more

Started smoking pot
Thought things sounded better slow
Much slower, heavier, black magic powers sing to this posers soul

VU, Stooges, undeniably cool
Took a lesson from that drone rock school
Manipulate musician half righteous drool

Gettin loose with the Pussy Galore
Cracking jokes like Thurston Moore
Pedal hoppin like a Dinosaur....oh Jay!!!

Rock & roll genius right in the middle of the road
Milk that sound, blow your load
Soon it's bigger than you'd ever said it'd go
Four stars in the Rolling Stone

Ooooooohhhhh, sludge rock (blah blah blah)

JUST GIMMIE ROCK!!!

It's gotta be!
C'mon indie rock!
Just gimmie indie rock!

Taking inspiration from Husker Du
It's a new generation of electric white boy blues
Come on indie rock!

It's gotta be!
C'mon indie rock!
Just gimmie indie rock!

Breakin down the barriers like Sonic Youth
They got what they wanted, maybe I can get what I want too!
Come on indie rock!

It's gotta be!
C'mon indie rock!
Just gimmie indie rock!
