Tell me something about "Girls Dem Sugar" by Beenie Man ft Maya

This turned up after a spot of aimless downloading and it's ruling my life right now. I don't really know who Mya is (honest - I may have been going through a serious phase at the time) and I kind of know who Beenie Man is (h0m0ph0b3, right?).

So when did it come out? Where can I get it? What other dancehall/r&b hookups come off this creamy? Does this kind of stuff command any respect in the dance, or is it purely crossover material? Anything else I should know? (Mixes?)

I have Girls Dem Sugar on an old tape from around 98-99.

The original came out in the mid-90s. The remix with Maya (produced by the Neptunes!) came out in the late 90s/early 00s. It's on one of the Atlantic albums. If you like this I would definitely try to find the "Dude Remix" with Ms. Thing (and Sasha?) The BEST of any sort of hip hip/rnb/dancehall crossovers though are the two Dave Kelly produced Baby Cham/Foxy Brown collabs from Broken Silence ("Tables Will Turn" and "Run Dem".) There is also a great Spragga Benz collab on there ("Oh Yeah").

Mya, ahem.

I'm not even gonna address the homophobe thing (I mean it may or may not be true, but what a weird oversimplification regardless.)

Yeah, Mya - sorry. First question & I put a typo in the title.
Neptunes - oh really? I guess my indifference to them is due for revision.
I will seek out the Foxy Brown album.
The oversimplification was intended as such. Zagga zow.

OK - based on that, it seems the original was on Maestro(1996).
http://www.discogs.com/release/255061 is the 2001 UK CD single with Architects and Colin Emanuel(?) mixes.

I just checked and the version with Mya came out on Art and Life from 2000.

Yeah the Foxy Brown tracks are awesome. I'd also highly recommend Mis-Teeq's "That's Just Not Me" with Baby Cham, another Dave Kelly track and marvellously squelchy.

Oooh I've not heard that one. Damn SLSK.

It's got these delightful little oriental flourishes and weedy flute riffs. I actually like it a little bit better than Fiesta as a riddim (though don't get me wrong, Fiesta is aceness incarnate) and wish it had received more voicings.

The other essential Fiesta voicing apart from "Dude" is of course Baby Cham's "Vitamin S".
