I've only heard a few S-K songs off of One-Beat, but it's gotta be the Breeders, right? Discuss.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

why compare? tard.

why compare, Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Because they're both popular alternative (predominantly) female punk/pop/rock groups with (relatively) consistent discographies. i think it's kind of obvious.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

if you've only heard a few s-k songs off of one beat once with the fan on high.

I probably listen to S-K more these days, but they've never done anything as good as Pod.

wombatX (wombatX), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

They're coming from very different places, though. Late-90s post-Riot Grrl with more of a punk pedigree and style, early '90s (+2002) American indie-rock without as much punk in their sound. The only major connection between them seems to be 'fronted by ladeez.' Throwing Muses or Belly v. Breeders, OK.

xx-post

People usually start threads like this to learn something about a group they're not familiar with (and don't have the funds-- or volition-- to go buy one of their albums)... And just because a two group's music isn't that similar sonically doesn't mean it's useless to compare them, i.e. Beatles vs. Stones.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm cool with the TS here. And I'll say Breeders hands down just for "Do You Love Me Now". The first Safari. EP ("Don't Call Home" anyone?) through to Last Splash are classic and achieve more musically, emotionally and melodically than anything I've heard from S-K. But alas, like poorthearte, I'm only seriously familiar with One Beat, so let's hear from peeps in tha S-K know.

As entertaining as the Breeders were/are, they were beholden to their limitations and, insofar as they could work around them they were pretty good. But they never made anything that rocked as hard as SK's "Call the Doctor" and "Dig Me Out," which are ferocious and visceral in ways that the Breeders could only approximate.

this is a legacy issue, I think... (S-K, in a photo finish)

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i would have it as a three-way competition, finishing

1. Breeders circa 1990
2. Sleater-Kinney
3. Breeders post-1990

overall, i prefer S-K, ceratinly on a track by track basis, but you can't deny the greatness of Pod. the problem with the comparison is that i can't imagine what mood i would have to be in to have to decide between Pod and, say, Call The Doctor. you'll either want to listen to the heroin girls or the riot grrls - there's not much of a cross-over.

in conclusion: plenty of room for both.

NEIN! YOU MUST DECIDE

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

s-k have had more good albums but last splash is better than any of 'em.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

quite frankly, Title TK has shaken my inner ears' cilia more than any Sleater-Kinney album ever has. (in fact, i prefer it more these days to any breeders album.) i think it has something to do with sk trying to convince me of something in their songs ("fight the man!", "accept lesbians!", "be nice!", "war is bad!") where as kim deal just wants to have fun. i like fun.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 28 February 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Breeders. Hands down.

fabio_gonzales (fabio_gonzales), Monday, 28 February 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved both Title TK and One Beat, both of which are quite uneven.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 28 February 2005 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the breeders are great, but sleater-kinney are light-years better. the hot rock alone would win this contest.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 28 February 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Breeders by so fucking much.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Kim wins on charm but S-K wins discography-wise

miccio (miccio), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Tho I totally dig the Breeders, S-K take it easy. Call the Doctor, Dig Me Out, and The Hot Rock comprise a sustained burst of pure ass-kickitude that Kim & co. just can't match. Earlier on they're not as annoyingly blantant w/the politico crap, and when the music's that visceral (and catchy) it's easy enough to ignore.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Dig Me Out's easily my favorite of the bunch and I want to say Last Splash competes with Call The Doctor and Hot Rock but then I think about "Mad Lucas" and "Roi" and dang some really draggy shit on Last Splash between the firecrackers

miccio (miccio), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the bad songs on Last Splash twice as much as the good songs on Dig Me Out.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

S-K. Although... ask again in a month or so, after I heard the new one; I didn't like One Beat one bit.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

No question for me, it is Sleater Kinney.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 28 February 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

dig me out is cute, but the breeders are undoubtably the better band simply because of the magnificant Pod.

rockaction (rockaction), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmmmmm...i'll say Sleater Kinney wins out in the long run record-wise, but I prefer the Breeders overall.
