Can anyone jog my memory about the glitch article in The Wire (I think) that started by talking about "The Reflex" as some sort of proto-glitch? Did I dream that? It sounds too implausibly hamfisted to be real.

caspar (caspar), Monday, 28 February 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't believe we never did this.

1. "Hungry Like the Wolf"
2. "Planet Earth"
3. "Girls on Film"
4. "New Religion"
5. "Come Undone"
6. "Save a Prayer"
7. "White Lines" (yes, I'm the only person on the earth who likes this cover)
8. "The Chauffeur"
9. "Union of the Snake"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 February 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Hold Back The Rain
2. Careless Memories
3. Meet "El Presidente"
4. Last Chance on the Stairway
5. My Own Way
6. New Moon on Monday
7. Planet Earth
8. The Reflex
9. Ordinary World
10. Hungry Like the Wolf

Anyone else feel "Notorious" (the album) is underrated?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, I've heard that the band themselves absolutely loathe "New Moon on Monday," and I'm inclined to agree with them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They only loathe it b/c the video took ages to shoot.

I love the song - a pretty good Bowie rip. And for once the lyrics are semi-coherent.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Waiting For The Night Boat
2. Lonely In Your Nightmare
3. Friends of Mine
4. Rio
5. Hold Back The Rain
6. Meet "El Presidente"
7. Serious
8. Downtown
9. Electric Barbarella
10. Secret October

and I agree Notorious was way under-rated

Flash (cowboytrance), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I should have put "First Impression" on my list as well. And Notorious was a very good album also, Vertigo, Meet El Presidente, all are solid catchy songs.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Dee to thread, natch.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hungry Like The Wolf
Cracks In The Pavement (the live version off the Wild Boys single, specifically)
Is There Something I Should Know?
Out Of My Mind
Hold Back The Rain
Ordinary World
Girls On Film
Save A Prayer
The Reflex
A View To A Kill

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(In chronological order:)

1. Planet Earth
2. Hungry like the Wolf
3. Save a Prayer
4. The Chauffeur
5. New Moon on Monday
6. Wild Boys
7. A View to a Kill
8. Skin Trade
9. All She Wants Is
10.Ordinary World

I don't know why All She Wants Is gets no love. I remember a friend commenting to me, when it was released as a single, "Oh dear, they forgot to put a tune in." But it's all about that awesome, doom-laden bassline, and le Bon's heavy-breather vocal ("Y'know you got to save some for the shoeshine boy", indeed). (The hi-tech video has aged uncommonly well, too, and for my money features the most astoundingly pulchritudinous woman in their entire videography... your mileage may vary.)

Palomino (Palomino), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you Palomino. Big Thing in general holds up pretty well, and I'd forgotten how good that ASWI video was.

Flash (cowboytrance), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, you're not the only one who likes their 'White Lines' cover. Though I'm not known for my taste so maybe that's no consolation...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Heard The Reflex in a store not too long ago. Ugh that song was AWFUL wasn't it? It really was tragic the way they suddenly sucked when 7 & Ragged Tiger came out. I mean after Rio you would have expected a lot more, or at least I did. Still love that instrumental on it, though. Let me see if I can dig up my memories of what various b-sides were called so I can put together a POX of some kind.

(no particular order)

1. Faith In This Colour
2. New Religion
3. Hold Back The Rain (the remix which is basically just extended)
4. Secret Oktober
5. The Chauffeur
6. Tiger Tiger
7. Last Chance On The Stairway
8. My Own Way
9. Girls On Film
10. Planet Earth

Notorious was indeed underrated, and would be the first place I'd go to look for more tracks beyond these 10.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Hold Back the Rain (12" Mix)
2. The Chauffeur
3. My Own Way (the slower version that sounds like a Lizzy Mercier Descloux outtake)
4. Electric Barbarella
5. White Lines (I feel better about this now...I think Thank You isn't as much of a travesty as has been claimed. Most of it's tolerable.)
6. Save a Prayer
7. Too Much Information
8. Late Bar
9. None of the Above
10. Khanada

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to bear AdrianB's children. Unless you're female, Adrian, in which case... well... sorry. Biological impossibility. But I *will* be admiring of you from afar.

And Ian, are you talking about the version of "My Own Way" that comes from the more common second U.S. vinyl release of the Rio album? The one with the uptempo guitar-heavy intro? Well... the one where Simon sounds like he's saying, "Hmm, get busy, yeah, just how I like it, with no clothes on top, MMM MMM!" at or very near the very end of the track? If that's the case, THAT'S MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE VERSION OF THE SONG TOO! (I must claim ignorance re: Lizzy Mercier Descloux, though I am aware of the Great Power of Google and will be using it very shortly.)

Anyway, trying to select JUST ten tracks for the intent & purpose of this thread would be an impossibility unless restrictions were to be given to me, so I shall refrain from giving my own answers to this thread question at this time. However, my rabid fangirl self gives kudos to Flash's, bahtology's, and Ian Riese-Moraine's lists, and VERY SPECIAL "I will build you a shrine" kudos to AdrianB's list. Any of your lists could be mine. (And Bimble does an admirable job of covering the band's early works. In fact, if my restrictions were just on the band's music from 1981 - 1983, that would be The Perfect List.)

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

6.  "Do You Believe In Shame?"

10. "Out Of My Mind"

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(Argh, I sorta feel like I've already cheated you! I SO also want to put "The Reflex", "Meet 'El Presidente'", "Too Much Information", and "Electric Barbarella" on my list too! *screams* I love DD too much [and this would be a surprise to whom... ?].)

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(OH WAIT -- "My Own Way" was a single TOO! DAMNDAMNDAMNDAMNDAMN.)

(*ahem* Anyway. Me go step out now.)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 6 March 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had the opportunity to read this earlier. Surreal Addiction, you're my heroine, and that was the version of "My Own Way" I was talking about!

Let's keep the afterbirth and throw Ian Riese-Moraine away! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian: I'm on the verge of tears right now because of something related to this musical artist, something I've been extremely bothered by for ages and ages. Your kind words and sentiments are like Kleenex to me. Thanks. (The version you're talking about, BTW, if you're interestd in this, is the Kerschenbaum remix. As are the remixes of everything on Side A of the vinyl version of Rio that most North Americans are familiar with.
