So....I didn't find any threadz about Rifle Sport, the great lost Mpls post-punk band of the 80s!

They had a reunion show at the Entry....only have a live CD called Live at the Entry/Dead at the Exit...which I now know completely FAILS to do them justice....

for those that don't know, this was Todd Trainer from Shellac's band in the 80s, with Flour and Gerard (shellac soundguy for a spell)...

Great great, super loud hit that perfect middle ground between Naked Raygun and Joy Division....the singer is still ripped like Iggy! really fucking great band

P.S. Alex in NYC I think you would really like Rifle Sport, if you don't already.

I got a Rifle Sport record with a hideous black and white cover (like a ska record) for $1 that I've never listened to. But I'm gonna tonight.

Rifle Sport has a couple of songs on the somewhat famous (I guess) Barefoot and Pregnant cassette, a Minneapolis scene compilation from the early eighties, but that's before Todd was their drummer. That drummers name was Jimmy. Their singer, Chris, is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. That cassette also has Loud Fast Rules, which later became Soul Asylum.

I don't have anything...it's pretty hard to find stuff...a dollar is cheap!

Yeah that would have been appropriate...all the members (except the singer who is a carpenter now)....played with their current projects...Todd did Brick Layer Cake (which is now him with Arcwelder backing him up)....Flour did a new thing with Arcwelder and a female bassist....Girard from RS is in a band called Kontrol Panel....which you can check out at www.zom-zom.com.

I just finished a Breaking Circus rarities cdr.

Rifle Sport is awesome, I believe Jack Cole and I were briefly talking about them a week ago. Whoever mentioned that Todd Trainer made the band is OTM. If I just made that up, trust me, I am a disciple.

I'd go to that show! The Flour LP on touchngo had a couple amazing Opal-like moments.

The thought of this puts me in the mood for latter day Die Kreuzen

"Flour did a new thing with Arcwelder and a female bassist"-flour's set was actually material from his early solo records w/ a full band treatment.

"when is the Man-Sized Action reunion?? "

they have played a couple times, most recently three yrs ago w/ Soul Asylum

the rifle sport show was incredible

I don't think anyone should hold their breath for a breaking circus reunion

chris besinger (chris besinger), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Man-Sized reunion I saw was pretty good, but they were a little rusty....I thought....Rifle Sport was fucking no-rust-at-all awesome and heavy and loud.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Rifle Sport has never broken up, so this isn't entirely a reunion. They manage to play every couple of years.

Cool. So when is the Breaking Circus reunion???

last I heard (this was a few years ago mind) the singer dude had undergone treatment for some sort of cancer and hadn't played music in several years.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

while that is true h...they haven't played together since 97 and from my understand hadn't really any plans to play ever again until Bill from Arcwelder put this show together.

chris besinger (chris besinger), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought they said onstage that they hadn't played in 10 years....I think this counts as a reunion.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

if they said that, they were lying!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

?? i dunno...I think he said, "see you in another 10 years....when we're 60" at the end....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I made a Rifle Sport easter egg about 15 years ago.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Gerard told me they hadn't played in ten years, and I've certainly never seen them in any newspaper listings. Where was that '97 show?

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 28 February 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a band that Flour was in a while back - like six or seven years ago - due to a relative of a friend of a friend being in the band. I forget what they were called, but I think their name had something to do with the Revolutionary War.
Anybody know what I'm talking about? They were co-ed and kind of good.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I had that live album and that was my only exposure to Rifle Sport. Didnt exactly make me want to hunt down any more of their stuff, thats for sure. Glad to hear they were so much better than that!

When did you say the Dragnet reunion is going to be?

YES! They were called Brits Out of America....awesome band, a friend of mine was the drummer....The lineup had two girls singers that both played bass....The lineup was 3 bassist...one drummer....and a drum machine....Really fucking amazing...they gigged very infrequently....Recorded one single with Martin Adkins that was on an Invisible Records comp that was released...did an album with Albini (or at least a bunch of tracks) that was never released, and some more tracks (maybe after Flour quit and there were only two bassists) with a local producer that were never released....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the 97 show was I believe for an Amrep employee's pre-wedding party...but it might have been early then that. I wasn't there I just remember it happening

chris besinger (chris besinger), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring on the Brick Layer Cake reunion.
