Where You Been All My Life?

What was the last record that, though you'd known about it for a long time, you never got around to actually hearing it until very recently? And then when you did hear it, you were blown away by how great it is and you can't believe you didn't get it years ago.

Inspired by listening right now to Bryter Layter.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Which I just bought yesterday and wow is it good. I last heard it around 1989 and didn't think much of it then.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess these would count, since I've known about them and in fact downloaded them from Soulseek ages ago, but only recently got round to listening to them and think they're all brilliant:

Opal - Early Recordings
Die Kreuzen - Die Kreuzen
Big Boys - The Fat Elvis

These are the only ones I can think of recently (i.e. this year)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Boys - YES!

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons

earinfections (Nick Twisp), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This summer I heard "Rock N Roll" by the VU for the first time. How in the world was it not a hit? Can't believe I've gone 22 years without hearing it.

PB, Monday, 28 February 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

These may turn out to be premature, but it certainly won't be the first (or second) time I've posted something foolish here. So I'll say Aquemini and Bowie's Hunky Dory. Can barely believe that Metallica stole Bowie's "Andy Warhol" riff to fill a few bars near the end of "Master Of Puppets".

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the title of this thread was my exact response to Dory Previn's Mythical Kings and Iguanas and Reflections in a Mud Puddle last week.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

PB - did you hear this piece of awesomeness that Mr. Blout contributed to the second ILMiXor disc?

The Velvet Underground-Live '69

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been listening to Kinks Kronikle since '87, but only got around to picking up the Village Green PS LP a few months ago. Honestly, I heard "Picture Book" for the 1st time on that HP commercial, knew it was Kinks, and wondered what album it was on. Why did I wait so long?

theophilus jones (theophilus), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm currently fixing my 70's jones with Cindy Bullens' Desire Wire, a thrift store buy that I used to see just everywhere back in the day. I was pretty well aware of what & who it was, Bullens being a Mainmain Artiste & all, but never picked it up. It's not glam, but more of an FM-rock period piece, with all the studio cats & ultra-creamy Tony Bongiovi production. Several of the songs are based on 50s rock-n-roll structures, but it doesn't really rock very hard -- kind of a peppy east-coast Fleetwood Mac sound that hits me just right. She's got her own kind of nasally voice, and on the cover she looks just like a tough Andy Gibb:

I think V!ctor!4 Pr!nc!p4l would beg to differ. In any case, how does she stack up next to Genya Ravan, music-wise?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

All three Nick Drake albums.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year it was Donnacha Costello's "Together is the New Alone".
As of late, it's been Detroit Grand Pubahs' "Funk All Y'All".
