one of the best dog songs, Floyd's "Dogs," might not be party safe

Townes Van Zandt's cover of "Old Shep," a sentimental song about having to shoot one's own dog.

If you can get a 2-channel mix down, the last song from Flaming Lips' Zaireeka: "The Big Ol' Bug Is The New Baby Now" is urgent.

Heard the Byrds do a really good version of the one about "Herrre, Blu-oo, you good dog you." Is It "My Dog Blue"? Also, a big early 70s hit about travellin' around,in a van or somethin, "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo." (Old hippies liked to point out that "boo" is an old name for "marijuana.")Robert Johnson's "Hellhound On My Trail" is good too.

Thanks, Joseph. It was a typo, but maybe some kind of Freudian slip, as the original title was "Brandy," before Barry Manilow got his hands on it. It was changed to avoid confusion with the Looking Glass song.

Here's one that I remember as a truly awful country song (but no doubt it is a great metal song)

Feed Jake, by The Pirates Of The Mississippi

Here's a better song in which taking care of a dog named Jack is mentioned:

I know we did a Songs About Dogs thread already, but I don't know how to post a link to a thread.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah we did cause i said neil diamond 'shiloh' on that one too.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

In fact (ahem) I believe I started that thread. But anyway, as I said there, one of my favorites is a song on the Anthology of American Folk Music called "Old Dog Blue". A better eulogy has never been said for a dog. (I'm too lazy to look and see who the artist is).

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

xxpost;
Just open the thread, copy the address from the address line of browser window and paste it in the message box for this thread. The html checker is smart enough to paste the link and title properly.

"Sadie" is about a dog? That Joanna Newsom never ceases to amaze. In fact, I did know a dog named Sadie once- in fact, her dog roommate used to like to sing along to My Bloody Valentine.

""Sadie" is about a dog? That Joanna Newsom never ceases to amaze."

4. Sadie
Sadie, white coat,
carry me home.
Bury this bone,
take this pinecone.

Bury this bone
to gnaw on it later; gnaw on the telephone.
'Till then, we pray & suspend
the notion that these lives do never end.

And all day long we talk about mercy:
lead me to water lord, I sure am thirsty.
Diwn in the ditch where I nearly served you,
up in the clouds where he almost heard you

And all that we built,
and all that we beeathed,
and all that we spilt, or pulled up like weeds
is piled up in back;
it burns irrevocably.
(we spoke up in turns,
'till the silence crept over me)

Bless you
and I deeply do
no longer resolute
and I call to you

But the water go so cold,
and you do lose
what you don't hold.

This is an old song,
these are old blues.
This is not my tune,
but it's mine to use.
And the seabirds
where the fear once grew
will flock with a fury,
and they will bury what'd come for you

Down where I darn with the milk-eyed mender
you and I, and a love so tender,
is stretched-on the hoop where I stitch-this addage:
"Bless this house and its heart so savage."

And all that I want, and all that I need
and all that I've got is scattered like seed.
And all that I knew is moving away from me.
(and all that I know is blowing
like tumbleweed)

And the mealy worms
in the brine will burn
in a salty pyre,
among the fauns and ferns.

And the love we hold,
and the love we spurn,
will never grow cold
only taciturn.

And I'll tell you tomorrow.
Sadie, go on home now.
Belss those who've sickened below;
bless us who've chosen so.

And all that I've got
and all that I need
I tie in a knot
that I lay at your feet.
I have not forgot,
but a silence crept over me.
(So dig up your bone,
exhume your pinecone, my sadie)

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

The next thing I know, you're going to be telling me "The Sprout And The Bean" is about a salad.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Well, I at least think it uses a dog as a metaphor.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

No metaphor about it- it's definitely about a dog. I was just too bewitched by the little girl lisp and the heavenly harpstrings to pay attention to the lyrics.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Damned Eddytor! But yes, 'Marie Provost' is essential.

"She was the winner
who became the doggie's dinner
she never meant that much to me
poor Marie"

And so Nick Lowe's eternal place in pop history was seccured.

Oh--"A Salty Dog", Procol Harum, if in title only.

Um, there was Barkmarket.

iang, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Marie Provost
I think I recall that the Basher felt he was being typecast because of this song and so backed away from this type of material. Kind of shame really, since he was so good at it.

What about The Poodles, of "Mirror Star" fame, did they have any dog-related material?

I Intentionally Ran Over Your Dog

YOU'RE DOG WAS YOUR ONLY FRIEND
YOU DEPEND YOUR LIFE SAVING FIXING IT'S BROKEN LEG
YOU LOVED IT MORE THAN YOU'RE PARENTS LOVED YOU
AND THEN I RAN IT OVER

YOUR DOG WAS DUMB, AND NOW IT'S DEAD
MY TIRE-TRACKS ARE TATTOOED ON IT'S HEAD
MY TIRE-TRACKS ARE TATTOOED ON IT'S HEAD

I DRAGGED IT 50 YARDS DOWN THE STREET
AND YOU RAN AFTER ME IN TEARS
I ALMOST CRASHED BECAUSE I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD
THEN I TURNED AROUND, AND TRIED TO HIT YOU

YOUR DOG WAS DUMB, AND NOW IT'S DEAD
MY TIRE-TRACKS ARE TATTOOED ON IT'S HEAD
MY TIRE-TRACKS ARE TATTOOED ON IT'S HEAD

thanks to everyone !!!..+ thanks for the link to the other thread]

quite an inspiring mixture of songtitles ..
now i need to listen and filter the dancable tunes here ;-)

i think Jimi Tenor shouldv've done something about a dog
[and it should've sounded like Sugar daddy] that's the kind of tune
i have in mind ...

i was aware of the Folk/Blues - inclination of the dog theme in music,
which is great, but i have a special need for funky dog songs right now you see ....

Pink Floyd - "Dogs"

Also, I believe on Momentary Lapse of Reason Pink Floyd had a song that used dogs in a very clever metaphor having to do with the horrors of war. Like, the dogs were this menacing and bloodthirsty force waiting to be unleashed by the political leadership. Can't recall the title exactly, but I've never thought of war the same since I heard it.

YOU SHOULD KNOW BY THE KINDNESS OF UH DOG THE WAY UH HUMAN SHOULD BE (Don van Vliet)
You should know by the kindness of uh dog
The way a human should be
You should feel the wet wood heart of the tree
Wood sap pop like a frog's eye
Open t' the fly 'n the blood of the river
When it ripples 'n clicks like uh waterbell
'n the elephant in his beautiful grey leather suit
Though he's wrinkled he looks smart as hell
'n the turtle's eyes carry bags very well
'n the snake's in shape
He rattles like uh baby 'wears his diamonds
Better than uh fine lady's finger
'n his fangs are no more dangerous
Than her slow aristocratic poison
And he plays his games on uh grass bed
'n uh monkey never had uh guilty masturbation
'n uh monkey wouldn't shit on another's creation
And the fatman cries throughout all creation
'cause he's got uh cold
'n the icebear dives thru blue zero for uh frozen fish
'n the eskimo wears his hide 'n chews his heart
'n the beautiful grey whale oils some bitches lighter
Someday I'll have money 'n I can frame myself
What uh picture I'll be choppin' down uh tree

"Your Adorable Beast" by Bobby Bare, Jr. and the Young Criminals' Starvation League. It's fabulous honky-tonk with horns about a man comparing himself to a dog to express his devotion to his gal. Really cute, fun, catchy-as-hell song.

kevinm, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Dogs on the Run is a real good song. It's my favorite on that album (which also has "Spike," not technically a dog song but does feature the line "Boys we got a man with a dog collar on/ Think we oughta throw ol' Spike a bone?").

Others...
The Beatles -- "Hey Bulldog"
Rufus Thomas' two other dog songs, both great -- "Can Your Monkey Do the Dog?" and "Somebody Stole My Dog"
Fred Eaglesmith -- "I Shot Your Dog"
