Here's one that I remember as a truly awful country song (but no doubt it is a great metal song)
Feed Jake, by The Pirates Of The Mississippi
Here's a better song in which taking care of a dog named Jack is mentioned:

4. SadieSadie, white coat, carry me home.Bury this bone, take this pinecone.
Bury this boneto gnaw on it later; gnaw on the telephone.'Till then, we pray & suspendthe notion that these lives do never end.
And all day long we talk about mercy:lead me to water lord, I sure am thirsty.Diwn in the ditch where I nearly served you,up in the clouds where he almost heard you
And all that we built, and all that we beeathed, and all that we spilt, or pulled up like weedsis piled up in back;it burns irrevocably.(we spoke up in turns,'till the silence crept over me)
Bless youand I deeply dono longer resoluteand I call to you
But the water go so cold, and you do losewhat you don't hold.
This is an old song, these are old blues. This is not my tune, but it's mine to use.And the seabirdswhere the fear once grewwill flock with a fury, and they will bury what'd come for you
Down where I darn with the milk-eyed menderyou and I, and a love so tender,is stretched-on the hoop where I stitch-this addage:"Bless this house and its heart so savage."
And all that I want, and all that I needand all that I've got is scattered like seed. And all that I knew is moving away from me.(and all that I know is blowinglike tumbleweed)
And the mealy wormsin the brine will burnin a salty pyre, among the fauns and ferns.
And the love we hold, and the love we spurn, will never grow coldonly taciturn.
And I'll tell you tomorrow.Sadie, go on home now.Belss those who've sickened below;bless us who've chosen so.
And all that I've gotand all that I needI tie in a knotthat I lay at your feet.I have not forgot, but a silence crept over me.(So dig up your bone, exhume your pinecone, my sadie)

quite an inspiring mixture of songtitles ..now i need to listen and filter the dancable tunes here ;-)
i think Jimi Tenor shouldv've done something about a dog [and it should've sounded like Sugar daddy] that's the kind of tune i have in mind ...
i was aware of the Folk/Blues - inclination of the dog theme in music, which is great, but i have a special need for funky dog songs right now you see ....

Also, I believe on Momentary Lapse of Reason Pink Floyd had a song that used dogs in a very clever metaphor having to do with the horrors of war. Like, the dogs were this menacing and bloodthirsty force waiting to be unleashed by the political leadership. Can't recall the title exactly, but I've never thought of war the same since I heard it.
