That Orbital song covered by the Butthole Surfers? (WINK WINK)

David Raposa, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The first two My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult albums plus the "Kooler Than Jesus" EP would be my startlingly obvious answer. "Rivers Of Blood, Years Of Darkness" is a forgotten masterpiece.

Evil Superstars: Satan is in my ass.

Satan Takes A Holiday - Anton LaVey (woman singing, I think Blanche Barton?). Lyrics are great: "The devil started dancing, he was quite entrancing, when he does the jangle his own way, the gentleman prefers to listen to aggrevatin' rhythm, that's the way that satan takes a holiday"

Anton gets a cool "satanic" sound out of that organ, whatever it is.

"The Devil Went Down To Georgia" is the best song about the devil. Actually, that's one of the best songs about anything.

Does hip-hop have its own version of this battle (rapper or DJ vs. The Devil)? That seems a natural.

Question: Was it a sin for Johnny to engage the devil in battle? We never found out.

Now I know we've done this before and not that long ago - we even did the Orbital-Buttholes joke ha ha then too - but can I find the thread? No.

Spinal Pap: Christmas with the Devil

fritz, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Sympathy for the Devil" and "Dancing With Mr. D"

Sean, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden, of course.

jel, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Satanics' "Hell--It Ain't The Heat, It's The Humidity."

Okay, it's actually not so good.

Douglas, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the supersuckers - hell city, hell

fritz, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does hip-hop have its own version of this battle (rapper or DJ vs. The Devil)?

I know I've heard this kind of thing. Ice Cube's "Fuck Dyin'" (awful piece of shit that it is) features the devil (or maybe it's just the Grim Reaper), but I don't think he raps.

Dan I., Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

satan gave me a taco

nelly, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Here are my own additions to the mixtape:

Max Romeo, "Chase the Devil"

Flytronix, "Shadowlands" ("the devil came for him")

Gravediggaz, "Diary of a Madman" (okay, it's about demonic possession, not the devil per se, but close enough and I want a good hip-hop track)

More suggestions welcome. Can someone suggest a great blues song about the devil? There must be more than a few.

Ian, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robert Johnson - Me and the Devil Blues

Justyn Dillingham, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Devil Got My Woman', Skip James

'Burning Hell', John Lee Hooker

dave q, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Cosmic Slop', Funkadelic. Now that is some heavy dysfunctional shit. Like a Jerry Springer episode, "Satan pimped my mom"

dave q, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Funkadelic also did "Miss Lucifer's Love", "Wars of Armageddon", and if Robert DeGrimston was a quasi-Satanist, "A Joyful Process"

Does hip-hop have its own version of this battle (rapper or DJ vs. The Devil)?

there's one on the new dmx album...and it's great! x does the devil's voice in this ridiculous high pitched (okay, for him) whine. genius.

jess, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re my previous post: found it!

Jeff W, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Magazine: "The Book" (b-side)

Bryan Ferry: "Sympathy for the Devil" (best version, saved him from Hall's dubious idea of class)

Kenneth Anger: Jagger (real fall guy) soundtrack "Invocation of my Demon Brother" for Anger-film-maker-as-magician contribution to Altamont legend

Kenneth Anger: "Lucifer Rising" music "video" featuring members of various '60s psychedelic bands imprisoned on drugs charges providing music via "prison orchestra"

Blue Oyster Cult: songs + cross/sickle image

George Gosset, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sonic Youth: "Satan is Boring" hidden track on CD (to avoid offense) that can only be played backwards (if you believe yr CD player)

George Gosset, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
