Muhal Richard Abrams kowtowing and supplication thread

I've only got a few records by this cat, but they're all killer. He gets overlooked a lot because he's a keyboardist with crazy ideas about free-improv combined with out composition in a big band setting in Chicago, but he doesn't think he's from Saturn, so he lacks the big hook. Still he's one of the big dogs in the AACM, so you know he's no joke!

That's about all I know - who can tell me more.

Where is the love for AACM!?

Primer: AACM

as far as Muhal being "in Chicago" ... as far as I can remember, he has set foot in Chicago maybe once in the last fifteen years. He and Braxton both seem to have some kind of hang-up about coming back here..

Thanks for the link! That's a very helpful primer indeed.

i think that was my first thread - i really like those two albums i was talking about. really high-quality experimental-big-band stuff. Blu Blu Blu strikes me as somewhere between braxton's Creative Orchestra Music and sun ra.

I'm only starting to realise how much great stuff this guy put out post-obit, Blu Blu Blu + Hearing Suite are my current faves.
