A House: I am the Greatest

Thinking about Edwyn Collins this afternoon has prompted me to put on this old favourite from the early 1990's. A great album in my view, exquisitely produced, passionate and vulnerable, although it seems not much talked about on this board. Three quick G's and a long E-flat, "Endless Art" is where it's at.

Endless Art was a bit daft, in my lofty view.

'I Am Afraid' is pretty, but again, they try a bit hard with the "... enough for two" bit.

'Cotton Pickers' is good too. I can't remember any other songs.

I like Endless Art.

Take It Easy On Me is the real winner, though.

My former Brooklynite lover had this album, and I never got to listen to it.

This is a classic album (full UK tracklisting, please). Did this band even get much notice? I mean, I was a big indie rock fan and these guys were totally off my radar until the mid-90s when a friend into the Irish scene brought them to my attention. But then I live in the US and it's easy to miss a lot.

The entire A House canon is full of great stuff - the last album, _No More Apologies_, is a stunner start to finish. I can't quite explain why they stand out for me - it's the literate, compassionate quality of Dave Couse's lyrics along with the odd instrumentation choices here and there. Couse's last solo album, appropriately titled _The World Won't Listen_, is just about equal to any A House album too.

they supposedly re-recorded a female version of "Endless Art", after complaints that they had excluded women artists from the original version's lyrics...

They did indeed, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyBWXb2b9ho

Did this band even get much notice?

they were from the same generation of Irish bands as Something Happens!, and while they threatened to occasionally establish a following in the UK their appeal ultimately failed to cross the Irish Sea. They were pretty big here, but so are many things.

What the hell, Dave Couse released a new album (Alonewalk) in the spring and no one told me?

Someone's been releasing bunches of A House demos and outtakes on Spotify, there's 4 albums from the last couple of years. Lots of good stuff!
