i say all time classic soul/funk/jazz album, better than d'angelos voodoo overall.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I said at the time that it was the best album of its year. A lot of people made fun of me. I haven't changed my opinion though.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

God I really need to get this, it's the only Badu I don't own. Thanks for the reminder!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Classic.

Seeing Badu and her band perform Mama's Gun at Montréal's Métropolis, however, added a great deal to my appreciation of the album (and Mlle. Badu).

Note to iTunes users - use the "Join CD Tracks" function to enhance the listening experience. (I've encoded it twice - once as separate tracks, and a second time seamlessly.)

Sometimes I feel tracky, sometimes I don't.

"Bag Lady" is my favorite Badu song.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Classic!! My favorite Badu. It's no Voodoo imo, but it doesn't have to be (although ?uestlove on Voodoo > ?uestlove on Mama's Gun).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Awesome awesome awesome.

But her best album (and her most underrated) is Worldwide Underground.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I love the hip-hop 1-2 punch in the middle of Worldwide Underground, that might be her best shit ever, but I can rarely sit through the jammy bookends.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Worldwide Underground is the sort of album only Erykah could have pulled off for me - ten songs, most of which are extended 'jams' which sound like they were improvised in a haze of weed with Erykah herself wandering randomly in and out of the studio, and only a couple of which are actual songs... and yet she holds it all together without ever appearing to try to.

It had some ace UK bonus tracks to, I'm thinking of "Love Of My Life" in particular.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, mine has that too, it's fun.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

i liked worldwide when it first came out, but i brought it into work and my boss asked me to turn it off because she was just gargling into the mic for an hour. i haven't listened to it since.

i agree whole heartedly with the sourpuss regarding Mama's Gun

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, she's stoned out of her gourd throughout the whole thing.

That's the beauty of it!

ffirehorse (firehorse), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

"gargling"!!!! Madness!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

this is my vanilla boss talking, not me

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Your boss is ONE STEP BEYOND vanilla, it seems.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Mama's Gun = Total classic.

This talk of Worldwide Underground reminds me of one really odd aspect - namely one of the tracks ends with a lengthy, heavily distorted bass solo that's extremely redolent of the Cliff Burton showcase 'Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth)' from Metallica's Kill 'Em All. Anybody else notice this? I've always wondered whether this was intentional or not? I suppose it's more likely to be some stoned Funkadelic-style improvisation, but still!

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't smoke marijuana, so I still don't get Worldwide Underground. It's okay to listen to, but damn.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Neither do I, but I luv luv luv it (& listen to it more than Mama's Gun) (when I can find it).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm probably narcoleptic, though, so there it is.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

WWU is no way a better album than MG. worldwide underground is like a stop-gap release, its like her version of nas' lost tapes.

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Listened to this tonight for the first time in years, so great. "Booty" is !!!

Jordan, Thursday, 11 October 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but does anyone know what the deal is with her new album. Lots of conflicting things out there. Wasn't she due to release two this year. The internet is confused, I need clarity.

I know, right?, Thursday, 11 October 2007 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 18:54 (two years ago)

Did they have him play drums over the sample? That's what it sounds like to me.
