what's your recent favorite aesthetic?

my main aesthetic of late has been repetition. most of it has been clean, crisp, chiming repetition - steve reich's music for 18 musicians, harmonia, neu!, cluster, the last track on oneida's new ep. but some has been less clean/crisp/chiming. i cant really stop listening to dj assault, either.

whats your recent aesthetic of choice?

really really harsh or strange sounds which are somehow transformed into shiny pop tunes.

POP!grime (Shystie, Lady Sov, new Crazy Titch single, Kano)
crunk'n'b (Ciara, Nivea, Brooke Valentine)
Bpitch Control
Vitalic (hoover noises!)
much of the Gwen Stefani album

Monophony. I just want to hear the root note of every chord on pulsing delay until the chord changes.

I'll second "music to dance to". My aesthetic quest is to make vocals sound digital and wierd without using or sounding like a vocoder. It's hard.

After an all over the place binge via the DC hub...I have no idea. But those late sixties/early seventies Beach Boys albums are happily settling into my soul, once again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Very orchestal, sort of muscial theater-esque pop music. The new Fiona is a prime example.

top 40 in the US or anywhere?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

i've been really into female vocalists for some reason. cocteau twins, breeders, vespertine and select galaxie 500 have been at constant blare around here.

Psych and noise. I don't think I'd have understood something like the Black Dice a year ago and I've definitely been listening to Animal Collective in a different way recently.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

back on a hyper-minimal tech darkness tip (dexter, each and everyone, timecode). indie dance that errs on the 'dance' side (recent outhud, tommie sunshine yeah yeah yeahs remixes, m83 remixes, jaques lu cont shining up the killers). hyphy.

Not an aesthetic, but I can't get enough mash-ups these days. Particularly anything with Top 40 vocals and classic rock. I love it when rockists and anti-rockists are forced to make out.
