Tech Help - iTunes Calamity

Sorry to take up a thread for this, but I'm starting to panic and haven't had luck elsewhere:

Suddenly, in iTunes, I have been clicking on random songs and getting that "!" mark next to the file, and then the message pops up saying "would you like to find the file?" I click yes, go to it, then I get the following error message:

"The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsc utility."

Any ideas? What is "Chkdsc utility"? Are my files gone forever? Sweet jesus. Thanks so much, tech-y ilxors.

I've had that happen to me, but only with tracks that i have transferred to my ipod and then deleted directly from the share folder, so itunes still thinks its there, and then cant find it when i click it. But i dont think thats the case with you so i'm a big fat no-help.

Sorry

Did you do any file-moving or program-installing or other type of stuff prior to this error popping up?

chkdsk? jesus christ, i remember that from the eighties. wow.

you're using a windows PC, right? basically, you need to be obtaining and running some kind of disk-repair utility (i'm assuming chkdsk - good god, it's a nostalgia attack - comes as standard). i doubt you've actually hurt the individual files ... can you see them ok in file manager (or whatever the fuck it's called)? is anything else misbehaving or is it just iTunes?

ok, go to Applications/Utilities/Disc Utility (something like that..i'm not on my Mac at the moment) and Verify/Repair Permissions. Reboot, open iTunes and the problem should be fixed. If it's not, try yelling at the machine and whacking it on the side a couple times, alternating whacks with b()ng hits.

Assuming you're using Windows 2000 or XP, just go to:

Start -> Run -> type cmd (for a command prompt) -> type chkdsk /r (including space after "chkdsk" before the "/r") -> type "y" to agree to the conditions. Reboot your machine and wait 45 minues for the 5 step process to complete.

This will not hurt the individual files.

i had this problem too, think it was related to the updated version of itunes. don't sweat it though, nothing is lost. the solution for me was found through an ipod lounge forum at this thread. Do what the user bobzoron recommends.

God, thank you guys very much. I will give all of this a try.

Yes, I am using a windows PC...

Yes, I moved a folder from the desktop into My Documents, but it didn't contain any of the affected files.

I will report back after I get to try this stuff, once I get home from work. You guys rule, thanks again.

the problem is with a recent version of the ipod updater. it becomes an issue after an ipod has gone into a deep sleep (36 hours without use). the link above to ipod lounge provides the temporary fix (its about 3/4 of the way down the page in the link). presumably apple with release a more permament fix with a new version of ipod updater sometime soon.
