Man Shot at Radio Station While Rapper Is on the Air
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK (AP) -- A man was shot in the leg Monday night in the lobby of a Manhattan radio station while rapper 50 Cent was making an on-air appearance, police said.

According to Newsday, the injured man was a member of 50 Cent's entourage. The newspaper reported that the shooting happened shortly after 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, announced he was dropping his protege The Game from his hip-hop clique, G-Unit.

The victim, a 24-year-old Los Angeles man who was not identified, was shot in the left leg. Officials said he was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and was listed in stable condition early Tuesday.

The shooting occurred shortly about 10 p.m. at WQHT-FM, or Hot 97, police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Farrell told The Associated Press. 50 Cent, who was at the station promoting the upcoming release of his new album ``The Massacre,'' was not harmed in the incident.

No arrests had been made. Police were investigating the incident.

Spokespeople for 50 Cent and his label, Interscope Records, were not available for comment.

In 2001, rapper Lil' Kim's entourage engaged in a shootout at the station that left one man wounded. Her bodyguard was sentenced to 12 years in prison for that shooting.

Yeah but whats this shit about kicking the Game out of G-Unit because he wont support 50's rediculous feuds with the known world?

I like everyone else in G-Unit more than 50 Cent.

50 cent already got laid out by ghostface so why is he pretending like he can't get touched? big pussy. me and a couple of my mates are going round his house and punching him in his face like ghost did.

Seriously, he fucking sucks. Weakest rapper ever to hit the top 10.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

His whole flow consists of not opening his mouth all the way while saying the same rhythm over and over again.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

when was Ghostface on an indie label? like i care anyways.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

It would be a shame to lose him. For a while I thought he was losing it but then I heard this "Ski Mask Way" track that was exciting everybody. Turns out he's got a really aggressive desire for money! Totally redeems his vanity, pathology and plod. He earns his Pac By Default status more than any other Pac By Default. I hope everybody else realizes that he is better than all rappers ever ('cept Pac) so that he can return to being a benign dictator and stop having all these necessary beefs with people. And don't dis his flow! It's not his fault he got shot. We should help him achieve his dreams of sexual, financial and cultural dominance cuz he's a better rapper with lockjaw then any other rapper would be if they had lockjaw.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Rizz (Rizz), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

wait - can anyone verify this Ghostface story? I know he disses 50 on Supreme Clientele (in a typically bizarre non-sequitur way). Ghostface "indie fag hip hop" (wtf?!)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 50 Cent

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

ghostface indie fag hiphop? i dont think he meant that. he must have meant the anticon peoples and so forth

I don't understand what miccios saying, or how many levels of irony/sarcasm were contained within, but this whole "50 cent is the worst rapper blah blah blah" thing is totally wrong.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

djdee, get rich was ILM's worst album of the decade, remember?

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I love his verses on How We Do w/Game....his phrasing on the "my bar....retta...the dram...ma...setta" parts are awesome and the whole part about how he's new money and they can kiss my ass part is great! way better than the songs i've heard off massacre...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah i mean i'm not in the least bit surprised that ilm doesn't like 50, this is after all the same website that hated on "just lose it" ffs!

bn, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

I've always loved "Just Lose It"

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Haha, me too.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

50 Cent is definitely in the middle of the pack as far as rappers go. G-Unit does have a really unique style though. 50 and Lloyd Banks in particular have a really defined style of writing. The hooks in the tunes sound like G-Unit and no one else. And they have a seemingly endless supply of producers who all make *G-Unit sounding* beats. I think Candy Shop and Disco Inferno are great. They just sound like G-Unit. There will always be people who don't like something, but its a style that I like and haven't found anywhere else yet..

And they are brilliant in marketing - something I KNOW most of you really don't give a shit about but hey..

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah i mean i'm not in the least bit surprised that ilm doesn't like 50, this is after all the same website that hated on "just lose it" ffs!

Aside from Miccio, NO ONE liked "Just Lose It"! (jordan excepted apparently) I mean compared to other Em singles, how long was that on the charts?

And I don't think 50 is in the middle of the pack, i think he's a great fucking rapper, especially compared to the rest of the guys in g-unit. I'm still not sure how people can say 50 is an average rapper... have you guys hear "Life's on the Line" or "Ghetto Quran" or shit "In Da Club" (what a backlash, jesus!) or "Many Men" or "Gotta Make it To heaven"? Because i just don't hear the mediocrity, its a slurred style that, when he really tries, is dripping with pathos and intensity...

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

i think candy shop and DI are mediocre songs, esp. compared to in da club or how we do or hate it or love it.

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

his big singles generally don't show off how great a rapper he is.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

his big singles generally don't show off how great a rapper he is.

right, he just is a crap rapper. compared to jay-z, ghostface, andre3000 etc

Rizzx, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I mean compared to other Em singles, how long was that on the charts?

dude why you do keep referencing the charts when you evidently pay no attention to them? The song went to no. 6! It was a hit!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I mean it's the biggest hit off the album!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

yes, because the plodding political song and the tuneless family values song and the preachy anti-beef song gave it such a run for that distinction.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I liked the preachy anti-beef song though....martika and all.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Game's kicked out of G-Unit now anyway so I guess he's probably over...I don't see that dude being a big star on his own....fuck it's like you almost don't even notice he's ON How We Do....50 steals it so completely.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

since when is g-unit the almighty and reigning hiphop team? please, they have lloyd banks (sic) and 50 as their main guys. thats not talent. game is on aftermath anyway.

Rizzx, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Game is (or was, until this week) on G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath. it's all the same corporate umbrella. and when people talking about who's "reigning" in hip hop they're usually talking sales and fame, which 50 & co induspitably have even if you don't think they have talent. I mean, it's rare for even the biggest rappers to have the kind of success with their posse albums and proteges' solo albums that G-Unit has.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

i guess the majority of people have earproblems

Rizzx, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

And correct me if i'm wrong, but number 4 is higher on the charts than number 6?

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

you can count to ten! bravo! how much more popular was "Real Slim Shady" than "Just Lose It"? Two more popular.

and being the least popular lead-off single on a track record of "My Name Is," "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me" is nothing to be concerned about or ashamed of.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

And correct me if i'm wrong, but number 4 is higher on the charts than number 6?

that's such a rockist attitude.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

This argument is getting stupid, but it was an awful single riding the coattails of an incredibly productive and popular career. I don't think its much of a stretch to say that at this point people bought it because it was eminem rather than "man this is the jam!" because its an unmemorable uneven hunk of crap.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

again, the world doesn't revolve around your skull. the one that revolves around mine says its a popular track because its funny and catchy as hell

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Since I'm sure you'll agree we're both theorizing at this point, my theory is that the song sucks and people bought it because "oh more eminem"

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

and the world that revolves around mine says that if you think chris fitzpatrick and tom green refs are proof that "this is the jam!" you need to double-check yer high school great-white-hope issues.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I mean shit if i wasn't downloading music these days i'd do that too - and i have done it in the past.

xp I have no idea what you just said.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm a little confused on that one as well.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm already happy about the fact he doesn't do his "Hi My Name Is" haha-ooooh-so-funny shtick every year. "Toy Soldiers" is a good commercial hiphop singalong. I liked it. "Just Lose It" to me, seemed like a failure trying to create a big club anthem. nevertheless it got in the charts cos it's eminem. of course, that's popculture right there

x-post

Rizzx, Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm saying that if you think dorky beats, fart jokes and dated references are a new low for Shady you need to go revisit those classic jams.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I think lame songwriting is a new low for shady.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

just cuz you're older, wiser and above that shit now doesn't mean you were as a kid (or when it was revelatory and exciting for a honky to just not give a fuck)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

wtf? Dude I just think its a really boring and lame song, how does this = "i am above fart jokes"? I still like classic slim shady fart jokes, i thought "Just Lose It" was a dull retread of stuff he's done better a thousand times before.

Just cuz you don't like a big hit don't assume all the big hits you liked in high school were infinitely more popular (bet the kiddies of today are lovin' this plenty) and nobody really likes it, a'ight? it's a lil' solipsistic. get one allmusic account and check one riaa.com next time.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm still interested in knowing not where it peaked but how long it stayed on the charts compared to those older singles.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

to get back on topic: what do you think of the concept of creating a big buzz in the form of a criminal activity prior to the release of a big hiphop album? it gets a little sketchy doesn't it?

quite a sentence!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

it's hiphop marketing i guess. not all hiphop but it seems g-unit style though. i'm not accusing, just testing my guess

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

i reaaaally doubt that....i think there are plenty of people that want to shoot him....i doubt he needs to arrange for it....

plus...um...I'd think that selling 10 million albums or whatever it was and having like 4 songs on heavy rotation on the radio and mtv right now might be enough publicity.

xpost--when nobody heard of him he got out with the story that he was a drugdealer who got shot 8 times. thats what people were talking about at first. so it started there, after that came the rapping which people also seem to enjoy.

Rizzx, Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

xpost--when nobody heard of him he got out with the story that he was a drugdealer who got shot 8 times. thats what people were talking about at first. so it started there, after that came the rapping which people also seem to enjoy.

Um..I'm not a huge rap expert anymore...I still follow it but less so than back in the day...but I had heard of him through "How to Rob..." that was a pretty big hit.....I knew him from his penchant for taking shots at known rappers before I knew about the shooting thing....come to think that might have been BEFORE the shooting, but I'm not sure about the chronology....but anyway, he had a buzz before the shooting*

*that's not to say that I didn't get real, real sick of hearing about the SHOT 9 TIMES thing....but that's PR/marketing for you.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "How To Rob" and his first deal w/ Columbia was back in 99...then he got shot, and Columbia dropped him and noone in the industry wanted anything to do with him. then he started making mixtapes and built his own buzz all over again. so yeah, people who just assume he was an unknown who got a record deal while he was still in a hospital bed are pretty clueless.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

rappers are so juvenielle

supercub, Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

So I just bought The Massacre and listened to the first 10 songs on the drive home. I've liked every song I've heard so far. I think 50 Cent is definitely a GREAT rapper. He sounds really different to me here than he did on his last record. Or even on more recent G-Unit stuff for that matter. "I'm Supposed To Die Tonight" is really catchy. All I will say about "Piggy Bank" is that its a good catchy song too. Most diss tracks aren't good songs (except for "The Takeover" of course). "Gatman & Robbin" is fucking brilliant. "Outta Control" is fucking evil. And "Get In My Car" is such a perfect fucking song to follow it. How can you not just smile when you hear that song?? Anywho I like it..

Hi-tek making beats for 50 cent now? thats good, he was wasted on talib kweli

l..., Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

2 beats on the Massacre, and he did beats on Beg For Mercy and most of the G-Unit solo albums. he's officially an Aftermath in-house producer now.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Big ups to Hi-Tek for everything I've heard that he's involved with. Totally overlooked by everyone when those "best producer" conversations are struck up. He's just got a great ear for sounds and tones. Something even some of my favorite producers are somewhat lacking. The "Ryder Music" beat just blew my mind. And "Too Late" from the Reflection Eternal record with Kweli is still one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard anywhere.

Jake One is the new cat to listen for right now. From the shit I've heard, he's just real consistent like Hi-Tek. Just seems that he's already found his own style. Never seems to do anything real weak -everything he does deserves a close listen. He did some great beats on the Gift Of Gab record and of course he did "Rock Co Kane Flow" with De La and Doom.
