inspired by alex's thread: how bout Walkin' with Jesus (sound of confusion) by Spacemen 3. thats all i can think of right now....

Matt O'Malley, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lots of Lloyd Cole songs. Can't remember the exact ones, but they're all good. Ask Pinefox, it's late and I have to go to bed.

Ally C, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Jesus built my hotrod" by Ministry..."Plastic Jesus"..."Jesus dont want me for a sunbeam"...

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SPIRIT IN THE SKY.

That is the only answer to this question.

JM, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus loves the children of the world! Shine Jesus shine, I dont know the writers I will get back to you, lets just Gods Spirit is working!

Alex a follower of Jesus, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, easy one. "jesus is waiting" by al green is utterly fabulous. there is, of course, the easy answer: velvet underground, "jesus."

fred solinger, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'jesus don't want me for a sunbeam.'

maura, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

shine on sweet jesus by the flaming lips

Jake Becker, Wednesday, 7 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clearly "Rise Up" by Bobby Conn -- "Jesus! He came back/ Jesus! High on crack/ Jesus! Threw Him in jail/ Jesus! Can't afford the bail."

Altho. JM is right about "Spirit in the Sky" and we can't ferget "Jesus" by tha Velvets -- "Jesus, help me find my proper place/ Help me in my weakness/ 'Cos I'm falling out of grace"

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pah, these indie answers are shitty. Y'all are impious. Don't ya ever listen to gospel? What about "Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind On Jesus)"? "Sinner You'll Need King Jesus"? "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed"? Etc. Or any number of Nick Cave songs.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Otis on this one. Indie songs about Jesus are adolescent shock-wank.* I bet Marilyn Manson's done loads of songs about Jesus too, huh, huh? It has to be "Wade In The Water". Great question though.

*OK they're not all like that. But a lot are.

Tom, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry but 'Jesus built my hotrod' is the shit as is 'Psalm 69' with those "Altered States" samples of the schizofrenic girl whispering "I felt like my heart was touched by Christ". 50% of the Spritualized songs mention Jesus, don't they? They're all good.

Omar, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom pretends to side with gospel, but then picks "Wade in The Water" which he in all probability only knows because The Make-Up covered it. Hah!

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The implication that I have ever listened to the Make-Up comes very close to being an abusive flaming comment, Mr.Clover!

Anyway "Wade In The Water" has now been stuck in my damn brain for an hour and a half.

Tom, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King of Carrot Flowers - Neutral Milk Hotel lyric= "i love you Jesus Christ"

jel, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah! How could I forget: "wooden Jesus" by Temple of the Dog and "quicksand Jesus" by Skid Row!

jel, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pretty much all of Dave McComb's _Love of Will_ album is about Jesus, although I'm not sure if He's mentioned by name very often. And it is a kick-ass record. In an acoustic and refined kind of a way...

alex thomson, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Jesus children of America" by Stevie Wonder and "They aint makin' Jews like Jesus anymore" by Kinky Freidman

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i can't believe i forgot about 'rise up'!!!

duh, me.

maura, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about Sister Wynona Carr? I liked Dragnet for Jesus. (I only heard it on a Vox compilation, mind you. I'm not actually knowledgable). Always makes me laugh, though this may be to do with the inherent hilarity of nuns. Hefner covered it too, but it was shit. Alix.

St. Alix, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Erm, what's wrong with the Make-Up? They're an ace live combo. Anyway. Jesus. Rhymes with Bono, sadly.

simon, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pop songs should not use that word. Bad idea.

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"plastic jesus" like when paul newman sings it in cool hand luke and also when the flaming lips did it. the make-up is a terrible terrible band.

matthew stevens, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Crazy For You (But Not That Crazy)" by the Magnetic Fields deserves mention just for this line:

"I pretended you were Jesus/ You were just dying to save me..."

Silly silly Stephin.

Clarke B., Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode deserves mention if only for the couplet "I will deliver/You know I'm a forgiver"

But the song about Jesus that stays closest to my heart is from a YMCA summer camp my parents shipped me off to when I was 12 years old. "Jesus is the rock and he rolls my blues away!/Bop shoo wop/shoo wop/whoo!" When I get drunk with friends who have been to similar camps, I am prone to lead sing-alongs. "Monday/I was all alone/Tuesday/I had my sins to atone/Wednesday/I cried and cried/Thursday/Lord I thought I'd die/Friday/I started to pray/Saturday/I read the bible all day/Sunday/I got the love of god in my heart!"

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heaven on Their Minds - JC Superstar soundtrack

Chris Hawkins, Thursday, 8 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Other Jesus" - freaking fantastic song by Swervedriver

JESUS URGE SUPERSTAR - Urge Overkill album

"Jesus is Just Alright" - Doobie Brothers(?)

I'm also pretty sure there's gotta be a Sisters of Mercy song with "Jesus" in it, I just can't think of one right now... ;)

Tim Baier, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Matt was right. I can think of very little beyond "Walkin' With Jesus".

Robin Carmody, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How could I forget:

"Jesus Walking on the Water" - Violent Femmes (off of Hallowed Ground)

"Her Way of Praying" - Jesus and Mary Chain (duh!)

Tim Baier, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Chocolate Jesus", from Tom Waits' last album, just to further cover the range of materials possible. And S3's "Ode to Street Hassle," because the idea of Jesus walking around and talking deep thoughts with a couple of bored heroin-addicted Velvet Underground fans tickles me.

Josh, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim, I'm perfectly happy to forget the stupid Replacements thread to support that Violent Femmes song, which is AMAZING.

Another grand one is "Jesus came Driving Along" by The Leather Nun.

Dan Perry, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"gimme a ride to heaven, boy" by terry allen is pretty great. About giving a ride to a hitchiker who looks like jesus, but turns out to have a gun. Good one, that.

paul, Friday, 16 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anita Lane - 'Jesus almost got me'

.

Nick, Friday, 16 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, Mr Dastoor - you beat me to it!

Can I mention the same song in two different threads? Ok, Talk Talk's "Happiness Is Easy" qualifies in both Kids' Choir and Gratuitous Mention Of Our Lord And Saviour categories.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three months pass...
I made a compilation tape recently with all songs mentioning Jesus I could think of. The listing: Leonhard Cohen - Suzanne. Velvet Underground - Jesus. Big Star - Jesus Christ. Nick Cave - Jesus Met the Woman at the Well. House of Love - Man to Child, Shine On, Hedonist. Tom Waits - Jesus Gonna Be Here. Nirvana - Jesus Does'nt Want Me for a Sunbeam. Jesus & MAry Chain - Wish I Could. Giant Sand - Dusted.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Rebel Jew" by the Silver Jews. It not only mentions Jesus, but calls for Texas to become a sovereign nation and wistfully recalls Michelle and "the towers in her mind". I think it's beautiful.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One day I will have posted the following on every thread on every board: "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine..."

mark s, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Jesus you Pal- Gus Gus
You got to serve somebody- Bob Dylan
Sympathy for the Devil
Born Today- The Stones
My Father House Bragg and Micoll (sp)
And most things by the danielson family .

who could forget kniky friedman's classics - High On Jesus and they Ain't Making Jews Like jesus Anymore.

Geoff, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And "I can't wait" by Ol Dirty Bastard, featuring the refrain "Big baby jesus I can't wait"

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

....what abt "Ballad of John & Yoko" by that noted Jesus-complex sufferer JOHN LENNON? (only says his last name though)
My favourite song *about* Jesus is "The Troublemaker" by Willie Nelson...by telling you that it's about Jesus I have ruined the surprise ending for anyone who has not heard it, sorry.

duane, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus Loves America, but I don't love neither!

flowersdie, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm not sure that i'd call "you, me and jesus" by the kittenbirds a great record, or even a good record, maybe an indie novelty record, but it does have jesus in the title.

girlfrendo released a cover of "walking with jesus" on the b-side of their "vivid confusion" single last year.

kevan cooke, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Wanderer" by U2, "Hot Burrito #2" by Flying Burrito Brothers and "Spiritual" by Johnny Cash.

"erotic jesus / loves his mary's" (Jane's Addiction, Three Days) surely the most intense invocation ever recorded

Richard Shindells Ballad of Mary MAgadalene. She pines.

anthony, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The very best IMHO is the obvious one: "Jesus" by the late Curtis Mayfield (from 'There's No Place Like America Today' LP)

Not forgetting also the song I like to mention on as many threads as possible by Bobby Bare.

Jeff W, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Jesus Hits Like an Atom Bomb" by Lowell Blanchard and the Valley Trio will freak your beak.

Glaring omission so far: "Jesus Was Way Cool" by King Missile.

ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Saturday, 9 October 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Flaming Lips probably owns this thread. The one that first came to mind is "Shine On Sweet Jesus" but I guess there's a lot more.

I Wanna Know You by Philip Bailey

aqua, Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago)

American Music Club, "Jesus' Hands"
Robyn Hitchcock, "Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus"
Jim White, "A Perfect Day To Chase Tornados" "Sleepy Town" "Still Waters" "When Jesus Gets A Brand New Name" (all from the album "Wrong-Eyed Jesus!" natch)
point:
Knights of the New Crusade, "Secret Sign" (et al. no doubt: KotNC is a Christian garage rock band with the truly awesome slogan, "He is the rock. We will roll you.)
counterpoint:
Vital Remains, "Savior to None...Failure for All" (et al. no doubt: branding an inverted cross on one's forehead as Glenn Benton has done surely walks that thin line between love & hate)

Jesus save me from
pity, sympathy
And people discussing me"

Morrissey - "November Spawned a Monster"

grapeshine (grapeshine), Sunday, 10 October 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

I suppose someone already made a joke about hymns ... I just ask because I think the song I want to say is close to a hymn - Woody Guthrie, 'Jesus Christ'. I like this song the best because it's sad, it has a good tune, and it's quite communist (I often wonder whether there are any out and out socialist (presumably protestant) Christian denominations):

'This song was written in New York City,
Of rich man, preachers, and slaves;
Yes, if Jesus was to preach like He preached in Galillee [sic],
They would lay Jesus Christ in His grave.'

A homosexual nymphomaniac, a homosexual nymphomaniac..."

Can't remember the name of it.

Pinefox never answered. So I'll try:

Just fro the first two albums. By far his best if you ask me.
- Jesus Said
- Rich ("And even Jesus has a price.")
- Brand New Friend ("Walking with Jesus and Jane.")
- Lost Week-end ("'Twas stolen from me when Jesus took my hand")

Extra point: In "The Sea and the Sand" he even mentions the Lord.

It's weird whenever I hear someone mentioning Jesus in a song I try to start to listen to the lyrics. I am not religious at all but somehow to me lyrics which contain the character Jesus are more precious to me than those who don't.

Put a straw under baby
Your good deed for the day
Put a straw under baby
Keep the splinters away
Let the corridors echo
As the dark places grow
Hear superior's footsteps
On the landing below
There's a place in the orchard
Where no one dare go
The last nun who went there
Turned into a crow
Turned into a crow, crow
Turned into a crow
The last nun who went there
Turned into a crow
There's a brain in the table
There's a heart in the chair
And they all live in Jesus
