I know it's lame but I have wanted the Glimmers to make a more housey mix for way too long!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

this is such a rare event for me with these cool mixes.

but damn i have one of those tracks on the glimmers set ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

OH SHIT

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Best graphic yet.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

i just got that glimmers dj kicks in the mail today! the eskimo thing looks amazing too! exclamation points all around!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

The Chicken Lips Trust the DJ comp is also really ace.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

haha vahid!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

s the Koenig Cylinders track a nod to Gareth??

it's actually a nod to my past as i licensed it exactly ten years ago for the first comp i ever did and thought it would be nice to re license it all these years down the line.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

So ner.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

did you guys have any connection to the dudes who did nettwerk?? because the "ring with spikes" motif on that comp looks a lot like the nettwerk "biorhythms" comps (and there's some overlap to the style, looks like)

btw that "vapourspace - hawkwind - silver apples - delia gonzalez" sequence looks on paper like it might be the greatest 15 minutes of music ever.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

i think yr getting network and nettwerk mixed up. anyway, i can't really remember how the logo came about but i have a feeling that we probably ripped off the network logo.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, you guys are like busses.

you wait years for a mix to come along...

the beginning looks totally class though.

D

danny boy, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
After initial moments of hesitation, really feeling "Not Tonight" by Macho now (it's on the glimmers DJ kicks comp.) Such an odd mix of pompous hard rock and Italo disco!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 21 March 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
just bought this sucker tonight ... HOLY SHIT IT ROCKS.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

the vapourspace ----> delia gonzalez section is as good as i thought it would be but i was unprepared for the brilliant bit where fast eddie comes in.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

The vinyl annoyingly has not markings to tell you which side is which. It’s like a psychedelic mystery

ladyintheradiator (ladyinradiator), Saturday, 7 May 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

so fucking fresh.

please tell us who is "damien donato"!!! who is "hole in one"?? who is"skatt brothers"??

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Skatt Brothers were a disco band on Casablanca. Walk the Night is what's remembered, but I assume Dancin' For the Man was a "hit" or single because it's marked up on my copy of the LP Strange Spirits. They were very gay. There is an "electro" version by the Bent Boys that I actually prefer, and seem to be alone in that opinion.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 7 May 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

damien donato was an australian who recorded just the one ep for juice records (licensed to music man for europe). this track was a rave fave back in the day (circa '92). hole in one was a dutch techno dude called marcel hol(e) who recorded for see saw at about the same time.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 8 May 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Dan, are you on Ssk and are you sharing the Bent Boys version? I'd very much like to hear it. (and also, who sampled that 'Stand up and scream and beg for more' line from 'Walk the night'? It's been niggling at me for months).

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 8 May 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

wow, this is bad ass. quite a statement, too. i saw that it was available at colette pre-release. very classy. i wish eskimo had better distribution in the states.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 8 May 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

i got mine for $13.99 at tower records!!!

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 May 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

this truly is musical sculpture of the highest order. really. i hate using superlatives to describe music (even though i probably do it all the time), but the care and curatorial skill that went into this is obvious and it's just top notch. has this been reviewed by any of the dance press yet?

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 8 May 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

wow i am off to tower this evening then...thanks for the tip!

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 8 May 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

and it is the vapourspace track that segues with "papa was a rolling stone" right? that's just brilliant.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 8 May 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm not on slsk regularly and don't have the Bent Boys version digitized, I'll to do that this week. In the meanwhile, don't know if the Skatt Bros version is mixed or not, but I have it as mp3 off "The Casablanca Record Story Disc 3", if anyone wants me to email it to them, just send me a big mail-box email address off-list.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 May 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

my tower didn't have it :(

but they had many copies of how to kill the dj part 2 which is a good thing.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 8 May 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

anyone know if any NYC stores are carrying this? (perhaps i should start with tower?) i was all set to order it from piccadilly online but it comes to almost $30 all-in.

rajeev (rajeev), Monday, 9 May 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah just adding to the chorus, this is great.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

hmmm.. i'd think if you're in nyc that it's probably best to start with other music

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

yeah that was my first try as well, no dice ... i'll just get it online.

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I usually don't bother with review bashing because I don't see the point, but this review of Psyche Out just really rubbed the wrong way:

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/music/reviews/4894/optimo-psych-out/

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

that guy seems confused to say the least.

The bottom line is, if you are looking for a mix CD in the vein of 2 Many DJs, then forget it. Optimo’s choice of songs is not as cool

LOL. i guess he forgot that he didn't realise dolly's "9-5" and skee lo's "i wish" were cool until 2 many dj's told him so.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

the mixing ain’t really up to much

he's getting a dead rat in the mail.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, he's kind of taking the stance of "I've kinda aged out of this stuff since I no longer go to cheap student clubs (what're those anyway)" while at the same time using the stringent teenage criteria of "Optimo’s choice of songs is not as cool" to argue his point. Yeesh.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i wish there had been cheap student clubs that played some of that music when i was a student! i guess i went to the wrong university.

i'm pretty much immune to reviews but every time i read a 2 many djs comparison i think it takes a year off my life.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/images/2003/06/16/16_6_2003_19%20baby_incubator.jpg

twitch & wilkes, yesterday.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Be honest, were you really able to maintain a straight face while mixing Mr Fingers into Chris and Cosey?

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

well, to be pedantic, they aren't mixed together. that's actually the point of the cd where wilkes finishes and i take over and it segues from one of the other. but, there are lots of points when i'm mixing things together that i am unable to maintain a straight face. but, i'm never trying to be deliberately wacky, i'm just trying to keep myself entertained after having done this for 20 years. if you can't please yourself...

jed - otm!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

to be honest, I haven't heard the CD, but as someone who particular loves the threads where new wave and house meet, I don't exactly see how or why Mr Fingers meets Chris and Cosey would be "funny".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

But I think we can all argee that "how they came up with the idea of mixing The Temptations classic “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” into a hard house track is perhaps best left a mystery."

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

that review really infuriates me!

shabba ranks (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

and not just because psyche out is one of my top 5 dj mixes of all time

shabba ranks (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

is it a hard house track? i'll tell you how the idea came up (apart from the fact that i love both records and at that point was going through a huge norman whitfield obsession). i was editing the koenig cylinders track and had the tv on in the background. 'papa was a rollin' stone' came on, on the tv and there was a weird 30 seconds where the koenig cylinders track i was editing was in perfect sync with it. so i tried to recreate that moment. there, mystery ruined.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

Jess double OTM

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

It is always good to hear Simple Minds’ “Theme for Great Cities” on a relatively new release, even if it is mixed with a lesser-known acid house tune.

wtf, the acid track layered on top is what makes it so great!

chakra khan chakra khan (sanskrit), Thursday, 5 October 2006 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

The reviewer's jaded "oh-this-mix-and-it's-packaging-are-sooo-crazy-but-I'm-bored-nevertheless" attitude makes me want to kick him in the teeth. Seriously.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Thursday, 5 October 2006 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

i can't understand why he gives it 6/10! what a cock!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 5 October 2006 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad that this thread has reminded us all just how amazing Psyche Out. By coincidence I was listening to it yesterday before this thread started and fell in love all over again, it really does have some of the most exciting and beautiful transitions of any mix I can think of. And WTF the use of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is inspired.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 October 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Have to agree with what everyone said. It almost seems like he's taking point s off for Optimo not being deliberately hipster-ish like 2manyDJs. There's a weird kind of snobbery in that Silver Apples line too.

I actually listened to Pysche Out a couple times the past few weeks, the Cosey-Scatt Bros-Simple Minds sequence is still incredible.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 5 October 2006 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

Stir, can you please just put a Destiny's Child vs. Nirvana mash-up in your next mix?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 5 October 2006 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

fuckin ell why haven't i bought this yet? (took me ages to get round to buying How To Kill The DJ too). SHAME.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 5 October 2006 14:48 (eighteen years ago)
