SLSK leechathon 2005!

Is it just me, or are a good 50% of people who download files from me (and maybe YOU oh no) on slsk sharing nothing whatsoever in return? Are they on some share-to-userlist-only deal, are they clueless newbs who don't know how to share their own files, or are they just schmucks? And is it wrong for me to ban each and every leecher that tries to download from me?

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

No. It is absolutely right.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

brand an "L" deep into their too, too selfish flesh.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if this has been going on a while and I've only noticed it now or if this is somehow related to the recent problems with shitty search results. Whatever. SLSK is making me angry. So angry I went out and spent $180 on CDs last week! That'll show 'em!

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

Also, as long as we're bitching about rude slsk behavior, what am I doing to get banned by people? I share ~1700 files, including a lot of cool rare shit like live ornette coleman shows and also popular stuff like recent hiphop. And yet some of these mofos ban me if I try to download an album. Won't reply if I ask why, either.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

there's no reasoning with power tripping geeks

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

there has been a problem with the newest version of the program 155, which when you install doesnt take into account the previous share details i.e. you have to set up your file sharing configuration again. i was wondering why noone had downloaded from me for a week! not that this explains all the people who refuse to share or the shitty search results recently.
i find it difficult to get hiphop stuff sometimes, there seems to be a lack of people wanting to share. any other genres like this? (i'm betting black metal people are the worst, a genre i have no interest in thankfully)

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

I think a laissez-faire attidude @ slsk is the best.

no precious time policing around, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

I only share with people on my list, but I'll add anyone who asks (it's a work machine and I have to be careful with the bandwidth).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

I've only banned one person, because he had three strikes against him.

1) Not sharing. Worst strike!
2) Queued up about 300 of my MP3s to download, and not even rare shit... just liked my upload speed, I guess. Mucks up the rest of my queue.
3) Didn't even message me to say pleasre OR thank you.

BANNINATED.

But if you are only breaknig two of these rules, feel free to grab my shit, I'm kaeru4401.

Will M. (Will M.), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

I come across non-sharers very rarely. My unofficial rules (I don't have a bigass script of rules like some users do) are basically Will's rules.

Nonetheless, I do think that not sharing is an offense worthy of receiving a ban.

Mr Adolph bin Streisand (Mr_Adolph_bin_Streisand), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

I am so glad I'm not the only one who has been having crappy ass search results. For God's sake I shouldn't have to blow my money on some album by [insert well known artist here] that I'm not even sure I'm going to LIKE for cryin' out loud!

I used to get mad at people who only shared with their list, and I still happen to think it's rude, but the excuse is always "I'm at work". At work? I can't imagine d/l'ng at work, that is just a totally foreign concept to me. But whatever. I got fed up with playing policeman, too. I mean I'll still ban people if I catch them, but I don't go looking to "catch" people as much as I used to.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Look at the members of Ladytron in that photo. See how pissed off they are that none of the others are sharing files with them?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Leftmost Ladytronner is actually more melancholy, and the midmost two seem apathetic leaning towards laconic. Only Ladytronner #4 looks pissed.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

RJG has an electroposse.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

To get much better results searching in Slsk I either:

1: Search my userlist first (it is a good policy to always add anyone you find with rare records and/or good speeds to your list)
2: Search in a particular room, e.g. the ILM room.
3: Add anything particularily tricky to my wishlist when I get no, or poor search results

This should allow you to find even the hardest to find stuff.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

I figured it was just me. As I don't know how SLSK works - I'm new to this - I thought it was cause I don't have enough files or something. I'm slowly importing/transfering music from my old comp and CDs. It was driving me mad that I couldn't download DJ Hell's Totmacher, heh.

Still dont know how to add friends/buddies with Soulseex (the Mac program). I'm so dumb. :-(

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Search in a particular room, e.g. the ILM room

I read the recommendation to search single rooms in another thread as well the other day -- best slsk advice ever. For none-too-obscure, actually released stuff I'm doing pretty well following this recipe:

(0. Get privileges; tho don't know if this helps as much now as before.)
1. Decide whether the track is closer to indie or hiphop.
2a. If the former, search the "indie" room.
2b. If the latter, search the "Underground Hip Hop" room.

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Think it might be a problem with the Mac version. I had people downloading and queuing for my stuff   last night when someone banned me because they couldn't see my shared files. I checked, seemed fine, told him to try again but he insisted they weren't there. Course it could be that he was saving bandwidth for his buddies and as he was a twat about it I'm not too bothered but I want to share with the polite, decent, loving people on there.

wtin, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

What program are you using? It's quite easy to find out what you are sharing: Just check your profile/shared files. Email me if you need help. :-)

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

The cheek! STEALING music from you, without letting you STEAL from them!

What's the world coming to?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Cheers, I'll check when I get home

wtin, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't download much - probably only 5 CDs-worth total.. But I can't seem to figure out (without reading any instructions, mind you) how to share.. I designated a share folder (on my home PC), but I couldn't read it myself from my work PC .. So, I really fucking hate networks - I can never seem to get shit to work right... (Of course, I don't put much time into learning..)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

yea, im having trouble adding people to my userlist, on SSX too

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I've got a small folder of approx. 100 songs or so that I share globally. The meat of my collection (at this point, all 2005 stuff) is reserved for userlist only, though. Whenever I queue up something for download, I add that user to the list.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Just found the solution in re to buddies/best friends for SSX:

http://chris.schleifer.net/ssX/index.cgi/project/faq.html

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

i've been having a lot of problems with my privilages lately; I'll queue up an album, and get bumped to 1 in the queue for MOST of it, but three or four tracks will leave me back at 1564th in line or something. annoying!

I totally upgraded and wasn't sharing for two weeks; I didn't realize what the problem was until I got banned by three or four people. I really hate the file sharing configuration interface; I don't share any RIAA protected stuff, but all my albums are inone directory, so I have to go through and hand-select like 200 artists every time I upgrade and my settings disappear.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like a good system, actually. But how do you do it without having two different user names? Or do you?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I think we should ban them, there's no purpose on having all the needs of a greedy geek satisfied, i share 20,000 files and have around 100,000 offline files under request, i dont think it's fair that someone want to grab that stuff from me if they are not sharing with everyone. I've got all my files from people who shares, why wouldnt i like to share then? No userlist!!

Golfo, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Eh, I don't worry that much about people who don't share. It's hard to not share and get a lot of good files. The people who don't share and download from me are just getting stuff like the Walkmen and the Killers (I feel like such an enabler).
The more irritating thing is with queue times. I should donate to Soulseek, considering how much I've saved on albums, but until then I usually just get in a queue. A lot of the stuff I find has 1000+ in the line, which I'm fine with, but it seems like right when I get to 50 I'll check back and hour later and be at 500 again. I know people with privileges can jump to the front, but are there that many people with privileges?

WillSommer, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like a good system, actually. But how do you do it without having two different user names? Or do you?

In the file sharing config on the 155 client, you can dictate which folders are for everyone and which are for userlist only. No need for two IDs.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

I ban everybody who isn't sharing files. If you're sharing only one file (which I've seen happen), you're OK with me and can take whatever you like. Slsk is peer-to-peer, not peer-to-freeloading asshole. If you're not willing to spread the love and take the risk with the RIAA, no freebies for you.

I've banned hundreds of people, but if someone messages me and asks why they've been banned, I'll unban them if they correct their mistake. It works both ways.

Keep in mind that you can usually tell when someone is a newbie versus a non-sharing asshole. Newbies have an empty folder when you "browse user's files", which just hasn't been filled yet. Assholes usually return a value of 'no files shared'. Users who care enough to share have usually bothered to set up their sharing configuration.

To check your own sharing configuration, list yourself, and browse your own files. You'll see exactly what everyone else would see if they did the same. This may help solve config problems.

My username is cdwill- I share around 1k files at any given time. Help yourself.

cdwill, Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

I ban if someone shares absolutely nothing, but I don't hold it against them otherwise. I HATE WITH PASSION the power trippers who make you jump through tons of hoops to dl:
"1. Less than 5,000,000 files - BANNED
2. Files not organized by label, then artist, then album in chronological order - BANNED
3. queuing more than one file on days that don't start with "T" - BANNED
4. less than 15000 white labels from april 1991 to june 1993 - BANNED
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

let's add some REAL LIFE NEFARIOUS EXAMPLES:
"greetings all! my list has been closed to the public for quite some time now because i'm tired of all the leechers and nabnab's (as one noob once called me). if you want on my list just ask me and have your list available to me. here are my rules:

1. share at least 1000k files
2. organize your shares.
3. do not share any fake files -this includes mp3s
swirls, beeps, static, and loops.
4. do not que up more than 2 albums a day.
5. dont share shit!!!
6. dont ask me to add you to my list if i cant access
your files.
7. dont have all your files in 1 single folder. see rule #2.

if you violate any of the above rules, you will be banned w/o warning. take me serrious. i ban and ignore ppl daily. only if you have special permission are you allowed to dwld more than 2 albums daily.

those who have special permission:

DARTH
plindboe
basil"

if anyone knows how to share from an external hard drive on nicotine, please tell me. i went from having many thousands of songs shared to having none. i copied a few albums over, but it feels weird to not be able to contribute anything substantial in return.

People who only share with their list should ask first before downloading.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Thursday, 3 March 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah its stoopid when people get all elitist about this kind of thing. I mean, we are all in the same boat, i dont care how many IDM records you have in your collection. It reminds me of assholes sysops that ran FTPs or BBSes back when i used them instead.

At least with slsk u dont have to fulfill a pointless ratio, that shit was dumb dumb dumb.

I'm oliver8bit.

I share what i have and i have an unsafe number of mp3s and music videos. I don't go with any rules at all, but if i see a long queue with something i really think more people should hear (like Phluph or the White Noise record) I'll move them to the top. That's about as far as i go.

btw I was sharing the new Super Madrigal Brothers for a while but it got deleted. im ripping it again right now so tonight it should be up if anyone wants it...

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Thursday, 3 March 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

My screenname's Omelet4th. Anyone, message me, and we can add each other to lists. I'm all for downloading random stuff.

If you don´t share, i´m sorry, but you will get banned.

Keep some order in your stuff.

Don´t queue more than 5 vynils or 2 albums/livesets at time. However, if you allow me more downloads, i allow you more too.

Everybody has to wait, but if you got something interesting for me...

Además, la gente que está en mi lista, tiene muchas mas opciones de bajar antes que los que no están en mi lista, por que tengo mas puertos abiertos para ellos.

Habrá veces que sólo comparta con la gente de mi lista.

three weeks pass...
I can't seem to figure out (without reading any instructions, mind you) how to share.. I designated a share folder (on my home PC), but I couldn't read it myself from my work PC

Hell, yeah. I only started using slsk this morning and REALLY WANT to share what little I have with the rest of the community, but when I browse my own file list, as per cdwill's advice, all I get is my slsk folder icon and no response when I try to open it. Frustrating, especially when I'm SURE disco8me banned me from downloading his Slowdive gear because he saw no sign of me returning the gesture. How do I fix this? My sharing configuration is already set to allow everyone...

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

my advice:

1 - open up slsk
2 - click 'file sharing' button (which for me is in between 'search files' and 'toggle away' buttons)
3 - click 'add shared folder'
4 - select whichever folder you wish to share
5 - select access level and then click 'ok'
6 - click 'ok' again and it should index your share folder.

you may be doing this but accidentally clicking something wrong at the wrong point (i used to just close the window, click 'x', at step 6 and folders wouldn't get shared). browse your files via userlist again to see if it takes, if it doesn't i'd check on the slsk forum (click 'web' on slsk or just go thru the site - slsknet.org).

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

the slsk forum is staffed entirely by know it all arseholes, so i'd recommend going there only as an absolute last resort

"Governement officials, affiliates or any person ..........will not contact this system's administrator without proof that what is on this page is illegal and proof that I entered this site legally."

Does having all this in your user info actually mean anything in a legal sense? Would it stand up in court? I'm guessing not but does anyone know for sure?

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Bingo, Bimble. Problem solved. Thankyou all.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

1) Not sharing. Worst strike!
Exactly. To me "No Files Shared" == "get off my wire!"

2) Queued up about 300 of my MP3s to download, and not even rare shit... just liked my upload speed, I guess. Mucks up the rest of my queue.
You think thats bad? Imagine what its like when someone tries to download your entire share directory...and you only have a 56k connection. A couple of times I've had to message someone and politely remind them that it would take them 6 weeks straight of download time to get all of them.

3) Didn't even message me to say pleasre OR thank you.
Y'know...I used to thank everyone I downloaded from...but I haven't for awhile. (Oddly enough, I always got the same response "for what?")

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

10. NO HABLAS INGLES? BAN!!!
Funny thing is...if they don't understand English...how can they know this guys rules. (Maybe he should post a spanish language version of his rules.)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Personally I think it's a bit strange to thank people, I mean who knows who might be watching? I don't mind chatting with people but if they start out the conversation with thanks I'm not likely to respond.

Imagine what its like when someone tries to download your entire share directory...and you only have a 56k connection.

Jesus H.! Are there people out there who do this kind of thing? Man, thanks for the heads up, I'm 56K too. Were you able to talk sense into them? I would be tempted to ban them straight away, frankly. I recall one instance where someone was determined to d/l something from me and merely the fact that they were in the queue was causing me all kinds of slsk/computer problems - the blue screen of death etc. I thought I was going to have to get a new hard drive, all kinds of stuff. But the thing I noticed is it only ever happened when slsk was running. So I decided to try banning this person and wallah, computer problems solved. Really weird.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I'll bet most of the people with "no shares" just don't have their routers set correctly. Don't be too hard on them.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 05:18 (twenty years ago)

Also, I guess some of those trying to download everything I have do so on the assumption that a file they've searched is in a folder with only the rest of the album, or something. (My files are a horrible mess, y'see.)

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

I think the people without their routers set incorrectly yeild an error message...but I'm really just guessing.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

olde soulseek had some nifty search options where you could search for directories, eg. /cheese/ and filetype search by .mov and so on. as i'm on dial-up til they activate the exchange i tend not depress myself by using slsk these days. wether the olde search functions work on the new improved one, i dunno.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

you can still search by filetype but it's not like it was. i'm not privileged right now so that might be part of it though, i know global search or whatever crapped out for nonpriv awhile before it completely went to hell. it's alot better than it had been lately but still not like it was, for me at least.

If you have privileges and they're not quite working lately, there's a little workaround: if you want "file a" or from someone, first queue up some other random file from that person's folder, wait for a few seconds, *then* queue "file a". Even if the first file queues you at #500(as if you didn't have privileges) the file you actually want will reflect your "privileged status", say 300 or 400 spots ahead(for instance). I don't know why this works and it's still kind of a pain but it helps ALOT.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

and in case you're curious, "file a" BUMPS cop that shit NOW.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

Wow, tremendoid. That's a really great trick. I guess my donation didn't go to waste after all.

TS: people who don't share files vs. people who ban a polite user for no reason?

If your router is incorrectly set, people will get an "Error trying to get file list". "No files shared" is indeed no files shared.

TS: people who don't share files vs. people who ban a polite user for no reason?

The latter make me sadder, as they're into active (low-level) malice, and there's typically no reasoning with them. Hell, one can't even learn whatever "lesson" they think they're teaching.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

is there a way in ssX to not transfer to nonsharing users?

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

ever since 1.56 my searches are as good or better than they ever were Back In The Day

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

This soulseek shit sounds like a huge hassle. How do you all deal?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

jonathan, i think the easiest would be to check if the one downloading from you is sharing. if not, ban. but personally i don't give a shit. i mean, who cares? we're already *stealing*. unless s/he's downloading a zillion files...

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

Soulseek is a mess. I don't trust the "no files shared" message.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

x post

Walter - we deal because when its working properly it's a God send.

Slsk users (for all the faults of a seemingly growing minority)are, by and large, muso geeks just like our goodselves (in fact, most of them are our goodselves!).

Tracks are labelled correctly and normally complete(unlike f*&CK*&^g Kazaa) because most of us are as anal as each other!!

If you want to check out that obscure Japanese Garage band/Underground Hip Hop/rare boot/whatever, you will (eventually) find it on slsk.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

WTF? That guy Bill quoted needs to cut back on the crystal meth.

I've had pleasant chats w/ folks from other countries w/ varying grasps of English. One time, I got to testdrive my high-school French (& Babelfish). What's wrong w/ a little international relations?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Lately I've had a lot of leeches who only share stuff that isn't commercially available, mostly live performances, dj sets, etc. If they're trying to download something commercially available from me, I ban those sneaky bastards.

TayBridgeCatastrophe (TayBridge), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

i'm on an old mac that can only run os9 and hence have no official/fully-functional client available to me - so i keep getting banned and it blows :(

jones (actual), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

taybridge you're a moron.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

lately i only ban if they ban me (and rather strangely this is happening sometimes after they've downloaded something from me!)(haha maybe they didn't like it), too many people have trouble configuring their file sharing for me to have to figure out if someone deliberately not sharing. i pretty much never have all my upload slots filled so the more the merrier.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

anyone here using solarseek on a mac?
if so how do i speed it up and how do i know if i'm sharing?

stelfox, Friday, 1 April 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

i just got this today and have never used any version of slsk at all before now

stelfox, Friday, 1 April 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

if it's similar to pc soulseek you should be able to add your username to your userlist and then browse your own files. i'm not sure how completely similar they are. speed depends on who you're dling from too so if it's slow it might be on their end.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

The latest version of Soulseek keeps on crashing on me, deleting all userlist, transfers, file-sharing folder info. And I get a lot of 'No Files Shared' messages, but I forgive them cos I imagine they just haven't got round to fixing everything up again for the umpteenth time that week.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

xpost. doesn't appear to be that similar at all i might need nathalie to help me out here because i think she uses it. just don't want to piss anyone off before i've even started. cheers anyway

stelfox, Friday, 1 April 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...

[someuser] hey you stole my files
[someuser] give them back to me

(i LOVE slsk)

sufilala, Friday, 15 July 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm a leech. i love leeching.

Ô¿Ô (eman), Saturday, 16 July 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Everyone who downloads from me seems to download about 10+ albums, coming back day after day untill (seemingly) they have everything I've got shared. But I only share O.O.P. stuff, so I don't really mind.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 16 July 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

My processor gets taxed out pretty easily, but at the same time I have a lot of new releases/advance releases people want. When I turn sharing off for a little bit to do other things on my comp, people send me ridiculously irate messages. Patience is a virtue, people. Calling me an asshole... eh, not so much.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 16 July 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I've just banned someone who only shared the James Blunt's album. Should i feel wrong about it ?

snowballing (snowballing), Saturday, 3 September 2005 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

Probably not.
