Am I allowed to plug the wee club thingy that I am starting up in Edinburgh this weekend?

I am slightly terrified that no-one is going to come which would be a shame as it is going to be ace.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

btw, I'm doing it for fun rather than money.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

yes, go ahead.

good luck!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

thanks.

Here's the flyer I can't make it any smaller as all I have on my work computer is paint and it all gets messed up.

Any & all comments appreciated. Positive ones preferred.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Where is that? Is it far up Brougton St? (How long to walk from Princes?)

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes and does it cost money?

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

It costs £0.

Here's a map It's about 3/4 of the way down on the left.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

sean, you live in edinburgh now?

hmmm, this looks splendid, good luck with it!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

about 10 mins from the east end of princes st. All downhill.

xpost - thanks. I think it could be great.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

I WENT TO WEE CLUB ONCE

GARU G, Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

WAS IT GOOD?

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

I think he means the royal wee.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

this club sounds alright

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

you should come.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps it was a royal wee club at Holyrood.

I now want to do a club in Holyrood palace.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I walked past a poster for this on my way to Waverley this morning. I assumed it was being run by someone who had spent too much time on ILX (it was '*Teh* GYM' that gave it away). Since I was on my way from the gym to the station at the time, I assume I would not be welcome... My experience of going to things underneath the Phoenix is that it is always rammed, since it only takes 30 (? maybe 40) people to fill it, so I wouldn't worry too much, hmmm. Hope it goes well!

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

The gym is just one of those things I keep hearing people talking about at work, in the pub etc all the time - a standard conversation for people who have nothing interesting going on. I prefaced it with teh as I'm not being entirely serious or dictatorial about who comes, what they say etc. I also like the fact that, to most people (who make it that far down the flyer), it looks like me making a stoopid typo while trying to be nasty. I'm not. I just put it on there as a way of tying to find people who give a fuck and who are interesting.

I'm not going to be monitoring people's conversations and kicking people out if I don't approve.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

a club that did that would be awesome!

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

well, not awesome, but interesting, anyway

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

it would need to be a very quiet club. or one equipped with potentially law infringing surveillance equipment. or spies.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I think a club where the conversations were policed would be good. There could be prizes / forfeits. Kind of like a strip version of don't mention the war!

Well, I would try and come if we weren't having folk over on Saturday.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Also did you plug this on ILE?: there used to be quite a few Edinburgh people on there, so maybe you could persuade them to combine yr club with a FAP.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, that's a shame. There will be other opportunities in the future.

I'm trying to think of ways to make the place look a bit nice and fancy. All I have so far is tablecloths and some conveniently placed lighting (the room is a bit bright normally).

x-post : I shall do so

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

i'll be in edinburgh on saturday for a friend's birthday. i shall try to make it along, although i need to be on the last train back to glasgow ... :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, the last train is at 11:30 so you will be able to have a good 2 hours there. The buses at midnight and 1 are always better than the train at 11:30 as everyone is ending their night and just tends to doze, rather than being in the middle of their night and being all boisterous and singing and being twats.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

good point. however: it's all gonna be dependent on mrs fiendish, who has to work on sunday :(

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

whose birthday? < /nosy>

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

i think i'll try to come with my roommate. bearded and slightly round, with glasses. say hello!

(ps, jed: yes!)

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

x-post: the boy athole. he seems to have done a piss-poor job of actually inviting anyone, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Would that be Athole Mclauchlan (sp?)

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

This may be about to get very Edinburgh.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

er, yes. it would indeed. i lived with him (in a non-biblical sense, just in case anyone's having fantasies) from 1993-1996.

coo ur.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

and were you also on the potterrow committee around that time?

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahah. no. i never sunk that low. but i was there every friday night, right enough.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Sweet. Well, hopefully, musik should be a lot better than Roadrunner. Come and say hello if you make it along.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I thought we must all know each other.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I actually hate you all but am willing to put that to one side so that my thing on Saturday looks busy.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

roadrunner, that was it. did bubblegum come before or after? ah, the nostalgia. i'm drowning in it here.

so, umm, mr hmmm ... do we know each other, then? i used to be a short-arsed little twat with floppy hair and a beard. (these days i'm a towering man-mountain, right enough.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I think bubblegum was before that. I only started going to the potterrow in about 1995, was on the committee for a bit when Athole was on it. I was good friends with a guy called Peter Law who Athole went to school with in Turrif.

short-arsed little twat with floppy hair and a beard - you and every other indie kid in the mid 90s....

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

pete pop. yes indeed, i remember him well. he was a really nice lad, although i lost touch with him long ago. i went up to turrif one summer and hung about with him and athole ... we watched whiteout, then peter got twatted about the head by an old woman with a brolly. can't remember why.

did you live with pete in the big flat in the west end, then?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

o, you did. the link to your flyer's just given you away!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the big flat on west maitland st. I'm about 200 yards away from their at the moment.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I'll ask pete about the brolly incident next time I see him. V amusing....

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

top. i shall do my utmost to get along. keep us posted about future events, though, 'cos - like i say - i'm not sure i'm gonna convince mrs F of the merits of musik. how often are you planning on doing them?

and give pete my fondest!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

1st saturday of every month.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

cool.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Sounds fab, think i might drop by. Is the phoenix near the bottom beside Crombies or up the top near the basement bar?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 4 March 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

New Kirkgate Shopping Centre

Well, you're brave!

Will try to make it along this time (on Saturday) Neil after keeping missing you. See if I can get Kev to come along too.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

See if I can get Kev to come along too.

hark, what's that collective sighing noise? ah: it's the rest of edinburgh giving up any hope of winning the pop quiz. you should call 4th0l3 too, just to ensure your victory is complete and crushing.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Not likely with Neil doing the questions. Might all be about Riot Grrrl or something :)

Yeah, I'll call Ath0le. What about you and 'pjem'? Ath0le wasn't in our winning/losing team of 1993/94... Wonder why that was looking back on it. Was he in a team with you?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

keith, we were mere neophytes in 93/94. i know you're the old man of potterrow and everything, but back then i was a fresher with an ill-advised goatee and a 10-quid leather trenchcoat. i wouldn't have been able to answer a pub quiz on finding my arse with both hands.

my cousin's coming up this weekend: i'll see if i can persuade him into it, but i don't think it'll happen. however: i'm gonna be through in chedinburgh in the next couple of weeks to see meet up with dave the mod (remember: he used to come and stay with us in arden street in summer; had a vespa in his bedroom) so i'll give you a shout.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Haha, no I don't know Dave the Mod, but he sounds cool. Certainly give me a shout if you're coming through.

Glad to see I'm an old man, thanks. I think I'm two years older than you, maybe three!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i'm still 19 at heart, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

We have some stuff from Mute to give away also.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Okay, my pals have bailed on me - Anyone want a 22-year old Canadian on their team? I like JS Bach, Jay Z and Okkervil River...

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 11 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Sean, I think I'm going to go down, and my friend Ath0le may be coming too... Happy to team up if you like.

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

go team keith! go team keith!

i'll be with you in spirit. any questions about synthpop, text me :)

hang on, the quizmaster will be reading this. erm ... NO, DON'T TEXT ME. [winks]

actually, i was going to text you from barfly last night at 2am to tell you they were playing "my sharona" by the knack. but i thought better of it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha, you should have. Was that Vic playing that? I'll have to text him my congratulations!

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

it didn't appear to be vic DJing, oddly enough. unless he's seriously grown his hair. mind you: i was very drunk.

if it was him, can you apologise to him on my behalf for a) the way my cousin and i hassled him to play "mr blue sky" by ELO, and b) the way my cousin stood in front of him flicking the Vs for 20 minutes, even after the house lights went up at the end of the night? cheers :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Haha, OK, no bother...

Kev bailed out because, get this, he's going to Sweden on Monday! He needs his sleep that lad. Slag him off if you see him please!

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

You're too kind, Keef! I'll be the fellow with shortish brown beard and glasses, solo and not too sorrowful. I'll get there bout 9...

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Cool, will catch you there. I'll try to get down for 9 too.

I look roughly like this:

http://kmwatson.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/me.jpg

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 11 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

you look exactly like that, keith. you did in 1993 too, and probably will in 2043.

nb: this is a GOOD THING.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 11 June 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

We won...

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

grand thanks to hmmm for a good time, and grander thanks again to Keith for his top company

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

ho, respect! who was the team: you two and the boy 'th0le?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Ath0le didn't make it, but Andy B, Moira, Paul G & Therese turned up out of the blue anyway. Great to meet Sean and to see Neil again. Good laugh all in all.

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

given the nature of this thread (and indeed its title), i don't feel too bad about doing some plugging of my own. especially given that it's to do with a band we've already discussed here.

so: if you want to hear two new tracks from the mighty swimmer one - and believe me, you want to hear this associates-meets-human league-meets-kate bush-meets-the cure-meets etc etc genius, you really do - then go here.and download away.

they're there to be shared - on the band's instructions - so tell your friends :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 13 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Glad you all had a good time at the quiz. I really enjoyed it. I'll let you know about the next one next week sometime.

This Saturday -

http://www.geocities.com/simpsonneil/poster.jpg

There will be Swimmer One DJs downstairs in addition to the bands as well as some awesome film/projection/"art" happenings upstairs.

There's also a projection walk starting from the bongo club at 1030 featuring the work of one of the people who is showing some stuff inside it on Saturday.

The music downstairs is at the indie/punky indie/hotly tipped end of the spectrum, thus music upstairs is at the other end, wherever that may be.

p.s. (AIDS)

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

'xvectors'

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

what're xvectors like? can't find anything about them on the interweb, & as I'm in NZ, my chances of hearing them are nil. annoyed/impressed that I've been beaten to covering "your love"! oh well, worst version evah of "baby wants to ride" coming up!

etc, Monday, 4 July 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

xvectors were pretty decent angular interpol type guitar indie stuff. I only saw a couple of songs as I was busy upstairs but they seemed ok.

The next musik is tomorrow night - Friday 15th - at the Phoenix. 9pm. 4 hours of the best music you will hear anywhere in Edinburgh.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

and it's probably going to be the last one for a while.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 15 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

interpol! so, um, not exactly punk-funk + early chicago house, then?
(any other dancefloor-centred local bands you'd recommend, hmmm?)

etc, Saturday, 16 July 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Are you not doing any more of these then Neil?

Was trying to get people to go along at Sim0n Stu@rt's birthday do the other night, but I thought it was next Friday. Turns out I can't make next Friday anyway, but what's the score? Are you doing more of them?

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Keith, were you trying to make us all turn up in Edinburgh for nothing!?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
the cellar bar appears to have been fixed now from its argument with a lorry - though i can't say whether the inside is any less soul-destoying than last seen just after its 'refurbishment' - are you ever going to put these on again hmmm ?

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

xvectors? Yeah, I saw them open for a gig at the Venue last year some time. They called themselves the Vectors then. pretty decent angular interpol type guitar indie stuff is the same description I would have used. back then I couldn't find anything online about them (I think they were newish and perhaps hadn't established any web presence) though there was online evidence of an unrelated band (swedish or something?) that had used the same name. So I think the name change was a good idea.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

I started a job in glasgow 3 weeks ago so I am a bit short on time these days. I'm having a birthday party in a nice wee bar in leith this saturday. Email me for details if you would like to come - simpsonneil@yahoo.com.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 29 August 2005 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...
Someone else should start up a wee club thingy in Edinburgh, just so we can keep this thread going!

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

You mean like us?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

:-0

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Are you lying on your side?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, though... Up to much tonight?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I believe the term is QNI.

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Don't understand, unless you mean the Queen's nursing institute, which is what Google thinks.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, perhaps that's from another place: QNI = Quiet Night In.

Are you stripping tonight?

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Well maybe... Not in a club, though. Just some wallpaper. Was that your idea for a club?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad I don't understand the meaning of quiet night in.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Well you are the one with a CD of Man 2 Man ft. Man Paris remixes.

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hooray. Kev is coming out. We will be going to Black Bo's where I will pay tribute to our hero DJ.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I would like to come, but since I was out last night I ought probably to stay in. Doubt I can persuade C to come out, since she's not been feeling 100% this week. Why not check out the Canon's Gait, while you're in the vicinity?

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)
