Hiya, I've just found this board, and thought I might offer my services. Clearly, some of you know a fair bit yourselves, but if any of you do have any questions about music, I'm thinking pop music in particular, ask away at me. I grew up in a fairly musical home, and I have read extensively. Take it easy.

Who's cuter 50 Cent or the Game?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Hahah. Um, I would have to say 50 Cent, but I don't generally "do" rap. Nice try. Next.

Wouldn't your time have been better spent learning more about world events than focusing on music?

If I spoke of the Pompitus of Love, would you call me Maurice?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

hey, slow down! I might start charging ;-)
Seriously, though, I'll try and do my best with the one's that seem less post-modern in their interrogative tone.

"Who do you think will win on "American Idol" this season?"
It really depends who's got it on the day. But, it's not just about the voice. Historically, if careers had been dependent on the American Idol / X-Factor shows, would we have had an Eno or a David Bowie or a Wedding Present? To be honest, I sometimes find myself getting into shows like that (I scream at the telly!), but it sets a different standard to the one I uphold as dear.

"Can Stourbridge ever relive its early 90's glories as one of the beacons of the UK pop scene?"

YOu never know. If he gets John Strang and Dave Loury to produce his records again, then there's a chance.

"1. Why did YMO break up?

Having a tremendous impact on numerous artists both in Japan and abroad, the legendary techno-band YMO broke up in 1983. Basically a parody band, They broke up for the same reason they were successful--they were all extremely talented musicians interested in trying new things.

"3. How come the Annie album isn't taking off?" The vietnamese Trong is not to everone's taste, I guess. Or it could be its association with Martina Hingis.

Malc Trewarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

As a followup to my other question: What is the correct pronunciation of the following names?

Maurice Gibb
Dave Davies

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I won't say no, how could I?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Do you like Green Day?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

"Do you regret starting this thread?" Not at all. Just think about it - once the (obvious) derision settles down, some people are bound to ask some serious questions.

"I won't say no, how could I?" The Smiths, by any chance ;-) Laters. Take it easy.

Malc Trewarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

"3. How come the Annie album isn't taking off?" The vietnamese Trong is not to everone's taste, I guess. Or it could be its association with Martina Hingis.

So you Googled "Annie + album" and found these two sites? Nice work. I'll be sure to come to you for all of my music-related questions.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

"Do you like Green Day?" They're really good. Damn fine. I would reject the accusation that they've sold out by becoming one of the world's biggest bands. They haven't so far compromised their punk morals on their path to fame, unlike some. Incidentally, many people think punk started with the Sex Pistols, but it really started in the States, so it's come full circle.

Malc Threwarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)Oooh busted!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Punk really started in ancient Sumeria.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

You are wasting your time.

Plunging Hen, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

punk's association with martina hingis is what ultimately killed it.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

The fact that punk was too small to be able to play in the modern "big girl" tennis era is what killed it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Are Venus and Mars all right tonight?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

When will Diamanda Galas' second album see a cd-release?

Will "POW (Forward)" get a domestic US release anytime soon?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

What's a better song, "Evil" by Interpol or "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't even know. It was all just a game. Freedom is a heart thing y'all!

"what do you think of my music?" Does it sell well? If it sells well, it's good.

Malc Trewarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Is it all over? MALC, WE HARDLY KNEW YE.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Marc, when do you think Ozzy should retire?

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking pop music in particular.......
......but I don't generally "do" rap. Nice try. Next.

Um, I hate to break it to you, but...

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

"Is it all over? MALC, WE HARDLY KNEW YE." God googles everyone. If you ever found out who I am, really, once you knew, you would see me as the poor man's you ... I am really quite inadequate: a useless eater, flittering like a scotoma on the eye, indicating the onset of a migraine.

Malc Trewarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)He meant "do" rappers, I think

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Is it true that when the heart rules the mind, one look and love is blind?

If so, if one wanted the dream to last, should they take a chance, forget the past?

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Freedom, I think, is a heart thing. Is any rapper as rapid as thine eyes, mid-dream? Mutilated, freedom is "Freem" and "do", and I am the poor man's you.

Malc Trewarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

When Pete Thomas wore the "Thanks, Malc" t-shirt, was it you he was thanking?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Aside from rap, what other genres should we be casually dismissing?

TayBridgeCatastrophe (TayBridge), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

'When Pete Thomas wore the "Thanks, Malc" t-shirt, was it you he was thanking' Pray, all alight from my computer on this jolly soppiness.

Take it easy.

Malc Trewarthur, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Malc.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Malc, do you like Tegan and Sara?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Are Franz Ferdinand fun?

ffirehorse, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

How does one pronounce 'Bruce Cockburn', and why?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

It actually rhymes with "slow burn".

Also, why can't we just look the other way?

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

How can we be lovers if we can't be friends?
