Atmosphere on tour with live band: reviews

Atmosphere kicked off their two-month tour last night with a live band (at a sold-out show in Madison, Wisconsin). This is my humble plea to ILMers: See these shows and comment upon them.

If you're a fan, the old songs sound radically new. If you're not, these gigs may turn you around. I'm just saying.

Here's my preview from January, written in a haze of cold drugs:

Well, I know some of the guys in the new band, so I might be a little biased, but the show was...interesting. Not a knockout, by any means though. Far better than the Hieruspecs match-up, but still a bit overwrought. In fairness, two caveats:

1. The show I saw was the guest list only show, and you could tell that the 5 previous shows in the entry had worn on the band a bit, and they were, after all, not in a situation where thay had to win anyone over.

2. According to the people I know that saw them do the unannounced Sage Francis opening slot at First Ave said that the Australia tour tightened them up quite a bit.

So, I'll be interested in what the reports from the field have to say. Personally, I'm just glad to see Nate from Helva making some well-deserved money...

I have to say, that was the only one of those eight nights in a row that I left early, mostly because I was sick, but partly because it was low energy. Friday in the series will go down as one of my favorite concerts in years.

Damn, I was out of town during the Sage show.

http://hardlyart.blogspot.com/ sean has a review up, although its more a description of the crowd. When my friends saw them in Columbus, they said the crowd was very distracting, and they kept shouting Slug down.

P.O.S. was shouting down Bush voters? Funny...

Not that I'm hoping for them, but has anyone ween any bad reviews of the tour? I'm really suprised that the live band thing isn't evoking more snide "rap-rock" slams...I mean, I think it works, but I was sure that at least one traditionalist would raise an objection.

Then again, most online reviews of headliners are love letters rather than poison pen pieces, I suppose.
