True or false?

Is she right or wrong? I believe the "ad lib" (?) she refers to is actually at the end of "Wanna Be Startin' Something" (on Thriller, not Off the Wall).

"Off the Wall" was an ode to the dance floor. There was the frenetic "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," which began with Michael doing a soft rap about "the force," right before the percussion went wild. There was the thumping, Africanesque "Working Day and Night," with Michael ad-libbing at the end, "Mamase mamasa mamakosa," as if he were Miriam Makeba. [Helene Cooper, New York Times, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get on the Floor and Dance With Me," 2 March 2005]

It is at the end of "Wanna Be Startin' Something"

Bill E (bill_e), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

oh the mama se mama sa bit?
Yeah, your're right, it's the end of "Wanna Be Starting Something"

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I used Google. But I thought that the "ad lib" she referred to might be something not part of the standard lyric or something obscure like that.

ffirehorse, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

i'm not even sure what the question is, but he stole the line from the Manu Dibango song "Soul Makossa"

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

oh, is the question whether it was at the end of "Wanna Be Startin' Something" or "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,"?

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

the question is, why does the NYT continually fuck up in this manner?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

because it doesn't take arts & entertainment seriously?

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

oh, is the question whether it was at the end of "Wanna Be Startin' Something" or "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,"?

Yeah, that's the question. I should've been clearer, sorry.

ffirehorse, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

actually the quote attributes it to "Working Day and Night"

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Right. "Working Day and Night." That's what I meant. Exactly. Apologies, I'm not firing on all cylinders today.

ffirehorse, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Is it still an "ad lib" if the words are gibberish?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

...or does "Mamase Mamasa Mamakoosa" actually mean anything?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it means "Honour the fire".
