Swing Out Sister - "Breakout" C/D

Something about this track has always made me giddy. I bought the 45 in 1987 and still play it often. Is this a forgotten hit? My local '80s station has never to my knowledge played it.

Anyway, I love the juxtaposition of Pet Shop Boys-ish synth bass over a live horn section - and then that beauty of a chorus hits.

Until I discovered Tracey Thorn I thought no other English singer could match Corinne Drewery for cool understated hurtfulness.

I had a crush on her for a while too: I even got the followup single "Twilight World" for $1.35 at a used-vinyl store only a few years ago.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

aw, i love this song too. i bought the album and was disappointed.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I love this song. She is even kind of rap-ish at one point. "Don't stop to ask," indeed.

Justin, Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Classic. I don't see how can there be any debate. But there must be detractors.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

I have a soft spot for Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Dreams," out around the same time.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

ts: "breakout" vs. basia's "new day for you"

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

i loved it when she threw her bowler hat into the audience on TOTP. it's classic!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

My mom likes Basia *shudders*.

I beg to differ -- the entire album's great.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

I love the blazer and T-shirt and gelled hair that was de rigeur for late '80s English synth-pop smoothies.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely classic. The horns make me grin like a four-year-old at Christmas.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I love love love love love this song. I heard it for the first time in ages recently, and it made me giddy. Classic!

great great tune, rubbish rubbish video

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I have a soft spot for this! Though I still prefer 'Soul Train' by Swans Way. Sort of a midway point between SOS and Dexys perhaps?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Hates Jazz are a hefty punt far beyond the pale though!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Classic -- a happy memory from when I first got VH1, in the summer of '88.

John Fredland (jfredland), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Long after the success of post-'Breakout' singles had dried up in the UK, SOS were 'big in Japan', I believe.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Been passionately re-listening to this album for two weeks (first listen was about a year ago after reading the sophisti-pop thread) and i actually don't want to share the pleasure, even with my closest friends, cuz i don't want its eerie cleaniness and disturbing banality to disappear within a casual listening session.

Every song is at least excellent, every intro has me saying "i can't believe it's still so marvellous". Favorite song is "Twilight world", probably one of the only pieces of english lyrics that ever moved me.

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I was disappointed when they made a jingle for Gary Davies out of it.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

"Twilight World" is great too.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

New album, according to Pop Matters

Swing Out Sister, Where Our Love Grows (Shanachie)

The phrase "big in Japan" might've been popularized in song by Alphaville, but it's been a punchline for far longer than that. Been off the charts for awhile but hate to admit that your success is waning? Just claim that you're shifting mass units in Tokyo and that, as a result, you've been focusing your efforts on setting up a tour of pachinko parlors throughout the land of the rising sun so that your fans in Okinawa aren't left wanting. I mean, really, who's going to question you? All jokes aside, however, the Japanese have decidedly diverse musical taste, keeping a lot of artists recording new material when they've been all but forgotten in their native countries; the Japanese love their power pop (Matthew Sweet has admitted to being showered with gifts when he plays), they dig the Britpop (the Trashcan Sinatras did a tour there and exclusively released their Snow EP via Sony Japan), and, yes, they quite like the jazz-pop, too. This brings us to the point of this entire discussion, which is to say that, despite the fact that you probably only remember them for their 1987 single, "Breakout," Swing Out Sister are still rather big in Japan. In a career that's heading toward the two-decade mark, Swing Out Sister have carved themselves a decidedly small niche as creators of the best lounge-pop since the 5th Dimension's heyday. It's been a gradual evolution from pop to jazz to lounge, but, after the too-jazzy-for-its-own-good The Living Return in 1994, the band discovered Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb and settled into a comfortable groove channeling the general feel of the best '60s and '70s work of those artists. Singer Corinne Drewery has one of the most soulful voices in the business, and it's a shame that Where Our Love Grows, another wonderful addition to Swing Out Sister's catalog and the band's first U.S. release since 1997, won't get the attention or sales it deserves. It's smooth and silky, sometimes slinky pop, the perfect soundtrack for your next cocktail party; just press play, and Love won't let you down.

don't stop to ask, Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps their new album might get the attention it deserves if reviewers concentrated on the album as opposed to wasting half their allotted word count with meaningless waffle about Japanese markets.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

This song is a gemstone.

BARMS, Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

The last time I heard'em on the radio was that cover of "Am I The Same Girl?" in 1992.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I adore this song. Great horn break and tentative "rap" section.

I also suspect it is why I have a weakness for moon-faced women with dark bobbed hair.

Could never understood the bit with the braceleted arms in the video, though.

The Mad Puffin, Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

TS: 'Breakout' vs 'Digging Your Scene'

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

This song is great. Always a treat to catch it now and then on VH1 Classic.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

For some reason 'Digging your scene' popped into my head when I looked at this thread, too.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I am so happy that so many people on ILM love this song! But what's with the "Shattered Dreams" bashing?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Next thing you know everyone's going to be talking about how bad "When Will I Be Famous?" is, like you weren't ALL reprazentin' for Bros back in the day...

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I love "Shattered Dreams" – especially the bongo solo!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

The followup single "I Don't Want to Be A Her" (which I don't remember) gets mad love on VH-1 Classic too.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

For some reason 'Digging your scene' popped into my head when I looked at this thread, too.

it was nice to hear it at your birthday drinks!

btw JtN i hear you have done very good things with a Go-Betweens song

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

ugh. i guess i'll have to be the first detractor. i've never ever enjoyed this tune. maybe the track's not so terrible, but her singing is very flat, not meaning out of tune, but faux joyful or something. or maybe it's just that the video's forced wackiness put me off the tune itself.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

this Hancock Fabrics store is driving me nuts. must...breakout.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

The video is very much of its time: Drewery on a catwalk? lots of strobe lights? Very 1987 fashionista. I just remember that SOS and "Actually"-era PSB reflected Thatcherite England very well.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Next thing you know everyone's going to be talking about how bad "When Will I Be Famous?" is, like you weren't ALL reprazentin' for Bros back in the day...

I was a fairly rockist 14-year-old and emphatically did not like Bros. 'Digging Your Scene' is great. 'Breakout' is OK. 'Shattered Dreams' remains awful.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

i remember thinking 'Shattered Dreams' was okay at the time, but i was what, 8?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

The chorus of "Shattered Dreams" is wonderful, especially when the singer strains to hit that high note.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I remember being very depressed by the video as a little kid, thinking, 'Is adulthood really that bland, that this is happiness, this is fun, this is BREAKING OUT?' Six years later I broke out in acne. I get the song better now.

Bernard E. Morris, Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

The song's wonderful and is even more fun if you sing it while tossing things hither and yon in a fabric shop.

But as jazz-pop goes, it's not quite as good as "My Ever-Changing Moods."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking a cover of "Year of the Cat" is in their future. She comes in incense and patchouli .....

Funny, that's how I felt the first time I saw the video for "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

ffirehorse (firehorse), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Bernard E Morris, you are completely awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I bought Breakout and Shattered Dreams when they came out in 1987 (aged about 14). This isn't necessarily a sign of quality though, as I also bought Star Trekin' at about the same time.

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

This song is basically perfect BUT I think that semi-rapped bridge does walk the line of awkwardness-approaching-cringe just a little bit.

I've been really into this band's first album lately. It's like an entire album of 90's anime opening themes. I guess its sound may even have been the inspiration for a lot of those themes.

"Theme" really isn't what I expected from Swing out Sister:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNHvQqqELVU

I wonder if they played it as an overture in concerts? Or if it was the two blokes in the band trying to show that they could do film soundtracks. It sounds like a mixture of incidental music from Star Cops crossed with battle music from a SNES game.

The lead singer's mother is apparently "the doyenne of England's hedgehog ladies":

I love "It's Better to Travel" so much. Been looking for more albums that hit that sound (which it seems the band departed from immediately and permanently). So far the closest I've found is "En Cavale" by Isabelle Antena, which hits on a similar glossy, jazzy Sophisti-pop type sound. Any other tips?

blazin' squab (NickB), Friday, 26 January 2024 20:48 (two years ago)

Ended up checking out Shapes and Patterns because it was their highest-rated album on rym. pretty straightforward and pleasant Burt Bacharach-style music but certainly not as fun or compelling as "Breakout". But interesting to learn about their second life in Japan - "Now You're Not Here" from Shapes and Patterns was a huge hit and they're pretty well-known there
